Speaking of Delta...
Today I attended a counter-terrorism briefing hosted by the American Military University at a local AFB. One of the guest speakers at the seminar was a SOF-D operator. He didn't say, and I didn't ask, if he was still kicking down doors- he looked approximatly in his mid-thirties. Not important.
Anyway... after the briefing, I had a chance to share a cup of coffee with him, and ask a couple (unclassified) questions. Faithfully, my mind was on OFP and BHD.
First, I asked him what weapon Delta snipers used, and was told: Delta snipers- like all SOF-D operators- carry whatever weapon(s) they are most comfortable/profficient with, and are limited only by what hardware is stored in their vaults. Whatever makes the badguy DEAD. The guns most often used are all of the one's we've seen, and have discussed in this thread. He did mention the AWP and Galil weapons, as well. Delta snipers typically shoot from less than 300m, with a 7.62mm in most cases... though if the mission requires, they can/will use the .50 out to maximum range. This guy was a CQB specialist and said he used an Aimpoint equipped MP5-SD most of the time.
My other line of questioning dealt with Delta medics... I asked if SOF-D brought their own doc's with them on an operation, or did they use other SPECOPS medical units for emergencies? His answer was: Both are correct. Delta members are all trained in intermediate to advanced first-aid and lifesupport. In a team, one or two operators will have more medical training and will be equipped and tasked to be a medic for fellow team members. If the mission is primarily hostage rescue related, additional medical support units are tasked to the operation. These units would include USAF PJ's, and sometimes USN SEAL corpsman.
I was satisfied with the info, and didn't want to be a bore, so I chose to end the discussion with a trip to the breakfast cart.
