OFP gaming style ?
« on: 30 May 2004, 15:58:45 »
maybe it's not a brand new question, but which way do you play OFP ?
e.g., which point of view: only 1st-person, sometimes the back-view, never or always 3rd person ? after finishing the GOTY-edition, i then felt to have to play in veteran-mode, you ? do you use any save-tools ? what about your personal standard-tactics (e.g. infantry) ? i've read of this unpopular so called "camper-style" in the clan-scene... i just can say that i love playing ofp as realistic as possible. (btw, didn't find a better forum to post this)

As much as possible 1st person, no crosshair, no tags, no GPS, no save tools. SVD + RPG + some light, but fast vehicle. It is the best game ever because of these things, which forces you to think tactical and not cheetical.

Means that there propably isn't any suitable board in this forum to post it in ;)

When in combat, 1st person, and when not, 3rd person. I must admit that the less helpers as crosshair and gps and such are used, the better the athmosphere is. However, my playing consists much of beta testing the same missions over and over again and reviewing and that sort of gaming, so easy playability often goes ahead of great athmosphere and realism.
Not all is lost.

ok, like myself, 1st person is the must for realism and suspense, but i use 3rd person for driving, windscreens are too dirty... with "tags", do you mean the icons of units on the map (cadet-mode) ? i wonder, which weapons are preferred, if you can choose. i love the sniper-rifles, but i found a lot missions were to easy then.

@artak: you could be right, but i'm not quite sure  ;)
oh, never thought of trying w/o crosshairs ?  ??? this thread yet is a success!

Greets,

3rd person infantry, only when not in combat. 1st person/ weapon view for combat. 3rd person for vehicles, most of the time. Somtimes drive jeeps in 1st person. Weapon view most of the time when aiming in vehicles.

Preferred roles: Infantry commander, sniper, fighter pilot, chopper pilot... since BETA testing Project MCAR, Missile Launching TOW HUMMWV gunner/ driver ::)

Sometimes, armour commander/ gunner (if the mission is good).

Prefered Weapons: Anything with a scope: stock weapons: M21, SVD, Steyr, G36. Addons: Been using the BAS M4s a lot recently.
Always bring a LAW with me, if the mission allows it. I just don't trust the accuracy of my AT soldiers...

Sniper rifle/ LAW or Scoped rifle/ LAW (for closer range combat). Always my weapons of choice.

Play as much as is possible w/o tags (the text things that appear over friendly/ enemy units), auto guiding AT etc. What's the point of OFP, if not for the realism, atmosphere and suspense (especially as a sniper, or in an ambush). Yet OFP still manages to find that fine line between 'realism' and 'playability'. Well done to BIS, I say... ;D

Yeah I agree totally. I'm so used to weapons reticules and aim helpers damn can't think of what you call it...

Anyways I just started using vet mode as I really never paid attention to it before. And I've found not having any of that stuff enabled is challenging and fun. I guess after a time you get so good that you know where to aim in 1st person without the weapons view. No crosshairs (thats it!) was weird the first time but I'm getting better...

Any vehicles I prefer 3rd person because I get a better pericpial view so I dont get "flat" tires from bumping a tree to much. ::)
I use 1st person for combat and peace time mostly unless I'm straining to see over that hill so the guy doesn't surprise me.

Stupid Q: What would 2nd person view be like? :-[ ::)

EDIT: GRK's fav weapon list

M21
RPG (rpgs don't fall as fast as laws do when going long distance)
Glock silenced
binocualrs
NVs

other favs
SVD Dragunov
AA stinger
FFARs: cant get enough of those Mi17 rocket pods! ;)
XM-177E2: good for multi, small recoil, accurate as M16 and has an auto + nice sound
UZI: lives up to its showings in other games very well, gets 32 bullets out quicker then you can say OPERATION FLASHPOINT

G36a:good for everything, all firing modes + scope
Steyr: Nice compact weapon, auto, cool scope =get guy in little circle and boom!, sounds cool
S&W: most poerful handgun out there, cool recoil effect, sound, gives you an old west feel

There you go..... ;D

@psywarrior: yes, better always bring a LAW yourself, BMPs were often a dead end for my assaults  :(  and i agree, the AI of the AT-soldiers is to be improoved dramatically, they too often only have one shot with the LAW and are out of the game  :-\
thanks for explaining the "tags", i disabled them (don't know if it's s default disabled in vet-mode right now) -
nothing to add, that's what OFP is all about. i bought OFP by luck as low-price version in a mega-store. when i started playing, i was so impressed and fascinated by it's realism and thrilling suspense just to survive. as i read in the www: "shooter-players, don't play OFP, you won't survive"  ;D

@Killa: killed a lot of cars myself  :-\ - 2nd-person-view ? not sure if it really exists, could be this "bird-perspective" / top-view, if you know this expression ?
- thanks for your comments -

All I know from english is that 1st person is like a first hand account as if the guy were right there talking to you so that makes sense as you are seeing it and feeling it through the players eyes.

Third person is like a narrator who is all knowing.

I forgot what second person is....
A narrator who doesn't know everything? :P :-\

What are tags?
Is it when you point your cross hairs or whatever at a soldier and it say law guy?

I shift a lot between 1st and 3rd. A lot. It doesn't got one minute of OFP without shifting. I find both very usefull. I allways drive stuff in 3rd though, not inlcuded air stuff.

Play vet. Crosshair on, find it hard to turn the view since OFP doesn't use the standard where-you-look-is-the-middle-of-the-screen thingy.

Quite aggressive though tactical player. I'm the first one in the battlefield and I'm the one who allways run out of ammo, which brings me into my gear:

Favorite Gear: M21, 4 mags + 3 LAWs. Usually runs out of M21 ammo due to my aggressive style of play so either I pack a guy in my squad with a G36 that I can take later on or I put some spare mags on another loon of my squad. BTW, I can hit a fly on 1000 m distance with a LAW. :P

I find my self as a good player since I blend my aiming skills with my tactical mind good enough. No one has beaten my score in Maccas Impossible Mission yet so I just have to own. :P

Either you are a real big boaster and bragger or you live, breath, and eat OFP. :o

j/k

I don't like playing with no crosshairs cause of what armstrong says up there but for one more reason too.
I haven't shot a real rifle but had a few paintgun fights and you dont need crosshairs there cause you have an idea of where you are aiming cause its in your hands. Like its a part of you....
I may sound crazy but with a mouse and a com screen its jus not the same as having that rifle in your hand as if it was an extension of you.... ::) :P

I'll stick with crosshairs. :)

@armstrong: do you think that your playing style really matches with OFP, sounds more like the ego-shooter-style ? and the M21 wouldnÂ't be the right weapon for this style too, i think. but thats exactly what i was interested in, so please dont mind... ;)
whats that mission by macca you mentioned ? would like to give a try sometime, or is it MP ?  8)

@killa: that s right, the missing feeling of things is one very import thing in games / sims. same with the racing sims, you just don`t have that feeling for the car, street and speed as driving in real life.

i'll give that mission a try but the screen on my com just got moved so I'm at a weird angle like at a cubicle. I'm used to straight ahead...
I'm not gonna play well for a while until the office is finished where the com should go.

I think LAWs, and RPGs are very accurate in OFP, too accurate?

Just line the vertical line up and comensate for distance with the horizontil lines. ::)

i was really bad in using anti-tank weapons, but with some practice its going
well now... but T80s can take a lot i think  :'(
