World War Two Campaign
« on: 29 Dec 2003, 18:28:17 »
I was thinking of a campaign and this was my idea:
Campaign - Baltic Storm

Background: It is December 1943. The Axis and the Allies have been at war for four years, with Germany recently facing substantial losses, being pushed out of North Africa by the Allies during Operation Torch, and further from Sicily during the 39 days of fighting which pushed the Axis back to Italy from Sicily during Opereation Husky. However, fighting was also about to break out elsewhere, putting more pressure on the German war machine. Three small islands, Malden, Kolgujev and Everon, all occupied by Germany since the start of hostilities in 1939, previously belonging to Poland, are about to become the battle ground of yet another area of fighting in this truly worldwide war.

Story: You play the role of allied servicemen fighting to gain control of these islands. From a regular British Tommy, to an American Paratropper, to a fighter pilot, in the struggle to take the islands out of Axis control.

I would probably use the A-E-C Island, so that you could start a mission on one island, and then get to the other in some cases. But also the normal islands for missions where that wasn't required.

Give me your ideas on this.

I like the idea of including all aspect of WWII. (flight, ground, sea). Plus with the kind of "what if" scenario there are few historical facts you have to follow that other WWII campaigns and missions suffer from (i.e. when you hit the beach at Normandy you know what is going to happen--bullets and dead bodies everywhere and most of your platoon gone.) I want missions that will keep me guessing, not missions where I know the outcome because I have seen and played different versions of in movies and ofp (I'm not trying to say that WWII people have made bad missions, most of them are very good). I'm glad someone is thinking outside the norm for WWII. I have a question thought. Why are these islands so important to the Nazis? I think the story that could be developed from this idea will be the best part.

Equally important, why do the allies care about these three small islands? And if they belong to Poland it's much more likely the Soviets would be the ones attacking them. Sorry for repeating the same point again (as in some other WWII post) but the Russians played more of a part in WWII than the UK or the US.

maybe it could be wherre they r storing nukes or somethin and r goin 2 launch em if u dont do nethin and u have 2 fight 4 the islands and either A make the nukes move off the islands (which should take a while and can b sitting ducks 4 planes) or B just destroy em.

I was thinking if you wanted to continue with the US and UK theme instead of switching to the Russians how about moving the islands to the to the coast of Norway. This would make an invasion by the US and UK more plausible. Here is one idea for a story. Lets say that the campaign starts before the invasion of Normandy, but after the push through North Africa. The US wants to prepare for the invasion of Normandy, which will involve a massive movement of troops and supplies by ship from the US to Britain. The only problem is the German U-boat. So before the US will fully begin this movement the German U-boat fleet must be significantly weakened. This is where the three islands come in to play. They are the staging area for most of the U-boat fleet. The US sends a sizable Task Force to Britain to combine with UK forces. Together they are to invade and destroy all of the U-boats (Of course this sounds easier than it will be.). First the allies will have to take the weakest island (probably a non sub-pen island). They will do this by primarily by paratroopers who will secure or neutralize essential points on the island (bridges, harbor, artillery.)Then after securing the harbor the ships will be able to unload tanks and other military hardware. They will use this island as a base of operations needed to invade the other two islands. Next you can incorporate an air mission or two. The first one to neutralize air-to-air threats and the second to neutralize AAA threats. After that a combined airborne assault and sea invasion(which could be like D-day but add some originality) takes the other islands. You could even do special operations mission, which I have yet to see in WWII OFP Campaigns. This is just one idea so I don't want to get into to much detail because it might not even get made. Tell me what you think because I have a couple more ideas.

Thanks guys.

I'll have a think about how to change it, taking your ideas into account. I like the U Boat idea! I guess I'd have to just use the EC Sub though or something for that at the moment.
But I'll work on my ideas later!

Well, here's a map of where they could be!

Note the 3 new islands south of Norway!

I know that the countries aren't right, but it was just a quick job!

Here is informtaion about U-boat bases and a map of where they were at this address:

http://uboat.net/flotillas/bases/norway.html

If you read through some of the site you'll see that the idea about the U-boats is not that far off from reality. These bases in Norway were used to launch U-boats that mainly attacked ships going to Russian. But I think we can continue with our idea. As for picking a port I think Bergen would be the best place. During the war most of the U-boats(190) were stationed there. Plus if you look at the map it is far enough from mainland Germany, so there could not be a fast response from the mainland. This means you would not have to worry about people saying that the idea not well thought out because the islands are to close to Germany. That was the only problem I saw with using the islands you reffered to.

Some thing else I thought about. I'm going to do some research, but I'm pretty sure there was a Norwegian resistance movement. You could maybe involve them so the story has more depth to it. Tell me what you think

I started working on a mission based on UK SF helping out with a failed US invasion of Malden but I've just forgot about it. I've got all the info stored somewhere if you want it.

Basically the US tried to take the south of Malden, took heavy casualties and where slowly being pushed back by Axis forces. You were inserted in the north using civilian 'spies' and had to take out ammo, fuel, armour, ambush Axis troops heading south and take out Flak Cannons protecting the airport to prepare for another attemp to take the island by the US.  ;)

They got the idea for Kolgujev from Cyprus.  They look the same.  Also Malden and Everon are based on some islands which I cant remember.

I was gonna make a mission kinda like this, the islands with u-boat bases on them in the norway area.  Where you take part in a commando raid to destroy the u-boats, because there was a lot of commando raids on norway during the war.  It got scraped as usual.

Kolgujev is actually based on Tenerife, according to the Avon Lady.   Everon, Malden and Desert Island are also based on real islands.

Maps here.
