Some basic editing/soldier behaviour questions...
« on: 23 Sep 2006, 15:43:30 »
Hello,

I am new here and to the ofp editing

I have a few questions
1: I have a setup where there is a town of enemy soldiers. A have a group of friendlies set to move into that town but always when they move in, they battle a bit then they retreat back and into the woods. Why is that? how can i make em go all the way?

2: Sometimes they move to the town but they move to the town via going into the woods on the left then going into town... Why do they do that and how can i stop em doing that?

This is Cold War Crises version by the way...

Firstly,

Welcome to the forum

Secondly, get Resistance/GOTY if you possibly can.   It's very well worth it.    You can buy it for $10 now although you may have to hunt around a little.

Thirdly, your questions.

1. They are fleeing because they are scared.    Make the group leader a much higher rank, and make some sidekicks with high rank too so that if the leader is killed they will take over.     The courage of a group is determined by the rank of the group leader.   Do not get bogged down in saying "but the leader would be a sergeant in real life", work with the game engine and make the leader a major.

2.  You can't.   This is the game engine being clever, and the loons taking cover as they move.   Well that's what you'd do, isn't it?    More courage might help, and more waypoints to keep them where you want them.  However, the game engine is so good that it has flanking built into it.

The real problem is that you are trying to make them go an unrealistic way:  rethink your plan of attack.

Just t mention the two biggest things:
- New bigger island
- New campaign (resistance)

There's also bug fixes, some AI improvements (afaik), new scripting functionality, etc..

ok i got another question...
I am the leader of a customized squad and i cannot get my AT soldier to blow a tank up, even if its right in front of him.
The furthest i can make him do is aim at it in the firing position...

How can i fix this?

Also,
How do i make the radio text at the bottom of the screen when i radio someone? (like in the compaigns)

If he targets it, try telling him to fire (using the command menu). Select him with F* (* = his number in squad) and then press the numbers 3,3 . And it should tell him to fire. Also if you want him to engage with you telling him to fire, try telling him to Engage at will. Select him and press the numbers 3,5 .

For your 2nd question. Is it the chat part bottom left , or is it some large text in the middle of your screen?

Resistance (patched up to 1.96) is the "market standard".    There are hundreds of missions, campaigns andaddons that cannot be played on 1.46.    It's easier to make good missions because of the improvements to the mission editor as wellas the extra scripting commands.   I1.96 is just miles and miles better than 1.46 in every possible way.

Try increasing the skill of the useless AT loon.

allowFleeing 0 would of course work for the fleeing problem, but its a bit of a blunt instrument.    The game engine has sophisticated fleeing routines and it is a shame to turn them off.

Ok,

*I tried the fire command, it dont work but i havent tried the engage at will yet, may give it a try.
*And i meant the chat part on the bottom left, where it has a bright blue text when you radio for reinforcements
*i tried allowfleeing 0 but it keeps giving a an expression error message
*Thats for the extra info on the new versions, i borrowed this game from a friend a looonnggg time ago and now i just realise how damn good this game is, especially with its mission editor. I may buy this game in a few months if i still love it.

Also, i just got another problem, me mission crashes all the time now, i think it is because of a trigger i set up but i aint sure. How do you debug a crash?

Blue text at bottom left is from command sideChat.   There is also vehicleChat, groupChat and globalChat.

If you get an error message from allowfleeing you probably have a mistake in the syntax.  Check the command reference - the online version is best, link on the OFPEC homepage.    If its still going wrong post exactly what you did and exactly what the error message is.

Don't wait a few months ... just buy it.   ;)

Dubugging a crash is hard.    Check that you have a player unit.    If you suspect a trigger delete it.   Sometimes you get an error message, post it if you do.
