*** LOGIN PROBLEM FIX ***
« on: 12 Oct 2005, 22:14:45 »

Relax everybody!  It's been fixed.

Since the server underwent routine maintenance yesterday (Tuesday) a few users have been reporting problems logging in to the site.    The symptoms are that you try to log in, it looks like you have succeeded but when you click a link you get logged out again.

We're very sorry about all this and we'll get everything sorted out as soon as we can.   This post will be updated with news, suggestions and fixes as we get them.

We have not yet determined the underlying cause.   The problem is  random which is making it hard to pin down.   Some people have it, some people don't:    the fix works for one person but not somebody else and so on.    There has also been a suggestion that members who chose 'always stay logged in' are ok:  the problems seem to have affected those who were logged out during the maintenance.

The good news is that once you are logged in the site is faster now.  :)

Edit:   We now believe we know what the underlying  problem actually is.  We're still working on what's causing it.

I'm happy to report that we now have workarounds for several browsers.    Thanks to THobson, Planck, Hawkins and Baddo for these tips.    If the fix for your browser doesn't work, try the fixes for the other browsers.  You never know.... If something works for you, and hasn't already been mentioned, please post it on this thread.

Internet Explorer & Firefox

This seems to work for most IE users.   Some Mozilla users report that it works, others report that it doesn't.  Certainly worth a try.

1) Log in to the site as usual

2) Close Internet Explorer while still logged in

3) Open Explorer

4) Go to OFPEC

After doing this, everything should be fine.

Internet Explorer & Opera

1) Log in from the OFPEC homepage (menu column on the left ... down at the bottom)

2) Err .... that's it.   The problem persists only when logging in from the forums page.

Mozilla

1) Go to the  Edit Menu -> Preferences -> Privacy & Security -> Cookies

2) Change the Cookie Lifetime Policy to 'Accept Cookies Normally'

Mozilla now works as it should.

It might be a cookie-issue. If the site issues a cookie for http://www.ofpec.com AND one for http://ofpec.com (without WWW), PHP-sites may get login-errors. I worked around this on my PHP-site with a simple script in .htaccess that will send everyone to one of the adresses.

Planck reported this interesting fix for Mozilla users:

Quote
The reported fix for IE worked for me using IE as well.

I normally use Mozilla and this fix didn't work for Mozilla.

I went into the Edit Menu on Mozilla.......Preferences....Privacy & Security.........Cookies.

I changed the Cookie Lifetime Policy to 'Accept Cookies Normally'

Mozilla now works as it should.

Hope it helps for you Mozilla-men.

Logging in test using Opera:

(browser closed between attempts, clears cache and cookies)

1. Log in from the forums page with default setting of "Always logged in" enabled and then click "Editors Depot Staff Discussion" board: logged out!

2. Log in from the forums page unchecking the "Always logged in" checkbox first, and then click "Editors Depot Staff Discussion" board: logged out!

3. Log in from homepage "Always logged in" checkbox not checked, then click "FORUM" - "Editors Depot Staff Discussion" ---> Success!

4. Log in from homepage "Always logged in" checkbox checked, then click "FORUM" - "Editors Depot Staff Discussion" ---> Success!

For me, the problem appears only when logging in from the forums page. Logging in from homepage works.

I can confirm that I can login from the main page (not from the forum) of the site with no problems, even without checking the "Always stay logged" button. Seems like the problem is indeed somehow related to the forum, as Baddo said.

Still using Firefox.

Firefox Fix

  • Go to the main page of OFPEC, click the Login link in the lower left hand corner of the left navigation bar. Enter your login details, make sure to check the box "Always logged in", and then log in.
  • Close firefox.
  • Go to your Firefox profile folder. The default is C:\Documents and Settings\[USERNAME]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\[PROFILE_ID].default\. USERNAME and PROFILE_ID will be unique to your Firefox installation, naturally.
  • Open the file cookies.txt, locate the following lines:
Code: [Select]
www.ofpec.com  FALSE  /  FALSE  1159462593  expiretime  1160759258
www.ofpec.com  FALSE  /  FALSE  1159462593  OFPECpassword  PASSWORD
www.ofpec.com  FALSE  /  FALSE  1159462593  OFPECusername  USERNAME
(PASSWORD will be a string of seemingly random numbers and digits, USERNAME will be your OFPEC username)
  • Copy these three lines and paste them in again right below the three lines, so now it will look something like this:
Code: [Select]
www.ofpec.com  FALSE  /  FALSE  1159462593  expiretime  1160759258
www.ofpec.com  FALSE  /  FALSE  1159462593  OFPECpassword  PASSWORD
www.ofpec.com  FALSE  /  FALSE  1159462593  OFPECusername  USERNAME
www.ofpec.com  FALSE  /  FALSE  1159462593  expiretime  1160759258
www.ofpec.com  FALSE  /  FALSE  1159462593  OFPECpassword  PASSWORD
www.ofpec.com  FALSE  /  FALSE  1159462593  OFPECusername  USERNAME
  • In the three lines you just pasted, change the / between the two FALSEs to /yabbse/, do not change anything else. It should now look like this:
Code: [Select]
www.ofpec.com  FALSE  /  FALSE  1159462593  expiretime  1160759258
www.ofpec.com  FALSE  /  FALSE  1159462593  OFPECpassword  PASSWORD
www.ofpec.com  FALSE  /  FALSE  1159462593  OFPECusername  USERNAME
www.ofpec.com  FALSE  /yabbse/  FALSE  1159462593  expiretime  1160759258
www.ofpec.com  FALSE  /yabbse/  FALSE  1159462593  OFPECpassword  PASSWORD
www.ofpec.com  FALSE  /yabbse/  FALSE  1159462593  OFPECusername  USERNAME
  • Save the file.
  • Open Firefox, now you should stay logged in, even on the forums.

We are working on resolving this issue, but in the mean time you can use the fixes provided in this thread to be able to use the OFPEC forums.
