need more objectives
« on: 02 Jun 2005, 19:41:05 »
okay ive created a mission and so far it has 5 objectives these are

1. Hold the town from the enemy beach assault.
2. Take out the armoured colum coming from the north.
3.Retreat.
4.Attack the enemy camp.
5.Destroy the incoming BMP's.

the story is the dy before you have captured the townand the following day you must defend it from an incoming beach assault then armoured tanks come to your position, and are forced to retreat then Bmp's are sent to the town you were in and cross you on the way, then a camp is spotted on radar so you must seize it and then finish off retreating what can i add
im trying to make this a realy long and hard mission at the moment im almost running out of enemy groups so any ways of getting around this would also be apreciated

You want it to be really long eh?  ;)

Well, heres an idea.

You take the enemy camp, which beforehand you are informed is the location of a high ranking officer. You attack, but a Mi-17 takes off before you can stop it. Whilst Intel trys to track the helo, which almost certainly has the officer on board, a wave of BMPs attack you.
After they are destroyed, intel located to area, and you are to join a new squad (i'm presuming most of your old squad are dead by now) which is coming via M113 to the camp.
You board and join your new squad. The M113 takes you to an area close to the enemy choppers location, and everyone gets out. Before you move out, you leader tells you to take an AA launcher from the M113, to take out the Mi-17 if it takes off again.
You attack the base, and the Mi-17 is destroyed before it takes off (because it has no fuel of something)
Then, an enemy Mi-24 attacks, and you have to use the AA launcher to destroy it. If you have used it, you will hav to resort to enemy light machine guns and maybe a .50 cal machine gun.

Anyway, just an idea.

Hope it helps  ;D

What's the longest and hardest mission you ever played?

And how many Objectives did it have?

Exactly.   5 is plenty plenty.

A misssion is a story.   A good story has a climax.  Where is the climax of this mission?    You want a hard, long mission, so the hardest and longest bit should be around the climax.    Bolting on more Objectives just makes it long, boring and amorphous, which is not what you are trying to achieve.

Adding extra objectives or extra enemies are very ineffective ways of making a mission more difficult.

What you need is much more sophistication in your existing Objectives.    For example, have two choppers fly over and drop paratroops behind the player.    An attack from two directions is very difficult to deal with.

In any event, you should split this into at least two missions.   It already has too many Objectives.   If you want to make a long hard mission it only needs one Obective - hold the town from the enemy beach assault.    Maybe fix it so the best way to achieve success is actually to withdraw temporarily from the town, gather stragglers in the woods, raid one of your own knocked out supply convoys, and then counterattack.     The whole camp thing is the next mission, surely.
Plenty of reviewed ArmA missions for you to play

i agree with macguba.
you should also make a mission telling of when you took the town. I assume you are using St Pierre as the town as that has the best beach. Large beach assaults are quite hard to do without having a land attack as well. I think that the destruction of the convoy should happen first, then you race towards the town just in time to help defend. Paratroopers land in the town (that's always fun) and soldiers attack from all directions not just the sea. All the beach defense missions I made just for my own testing, when it was only a naval force attacking, they were always wiped out straight away. Oh and an enemy bombing run would be good as well.
The camp and attack BMPs surely is a second mission(or third depending on whether you make a mission before)

okay erm im using La Rivieree in Malden ive already made a beach assault in St Pierre.
Ill go alittle more in depth with this

The day before (mission before) soviet forces are aproaching the town and it is unarmed so your patrol must move quick to the town's position and hold it from the Russians.
(mission ends)

Next day (this mission)
Soviet forces have been spotted heading to the town but in boats and bmp's you must defend the town from the beach assault.
When done word comes in that Soviet tanks are aproaching from the north since you have taken to many casualties you must retreat if you want you can attack the tanks but theres 4 t80's and you have used most of your ammo

During the retreat papabear tells you that 3 Bmp's have landed in the town of Cancon and look like they are coming to La Rivierre and will cross you on the way so youve got no chocie to take them out really

Then on the way to the ERV wich is Chapoi funny radio signals get picked up near Cancon and you are told to investigate now papabear wants you to attack the small camp it only has about 15 men in all wich are pretty dumb once you have cleared the camp from the Soviets you are cleared to move onto the ERV again then once you get there mission ends and the outro shows, it might sound like a long mission but only about 15-20 minutes wich im looking for around 30 minutes at the most becuase nearly all my missions are short around 15mins so a change of pace would be nice

Ive also added a sand storm into this because the season is turning into winter and heavy winds have been picking up it also adds great effects harder to see and so on.

Well thats the mission just little things to improve it maybe aanother objective but not nesecrially but just ways of extending the combat times

La Riviere is the one used in the campaign mission defend "Malden". Good choice. If you want another objective, on the way to the camp have an enemy ambush on your truck or m113 or whatever you're using, all the vehicles are destroyed so you have to 'acquire' a russian vehicle from a petrol station or road checkpoint
