Putting a safety on explosive rounds

I'm new to addon editing, so I'm sorry if this is terribly basic.  I modified the M60 to shoot bullets with the power of laser-guided bombs.  It's been done before, as I was inspired from viewing the config.cpp of existing addons.

That kind of firepower has a tendency to kill the place if they aren't careful.  I was curious if there's a way to make the bullet a dud, or rather behave like a normal M60 round within a safe distance around the player.
