'Do I look like I need to carry... artificial merchandise?'

Browsing through the missions, I see that the majority of them make use of the editor upgrades, mods, and custom objects, skins, etc.

I myself don't bother with these missions or addons, because I don't like to use unofficial addons for my games.  When I get around to actually making some missions (I plan them on paper and print out maps and stuff, but then I get carried away with the intricacies), I'm only going to use what comes with the game...  Does anyone else feel the same way?

There's so many addons out there, and they dirty up your editor, and with the ones I once downloaded, caused more harm than good.

I'd like to see more missions made with what comes in the box or from BIS, but I'm no expert editor.

I once thought like you do and for a long time used no unofficial addons in my missions. Things change.

Once I downloaded a mortar addon mucho time ago (can't remember the author), I was sold. I just had to use it. I think the game is missing a mortar as a weapon (and lots of other stuff).

Anyhow, then started to come the mod packs like SEB's nampack. Even still I don't like to use separate lonely adons in my missions with no relation to the mission plot, but think of it this way; The game has been around for a long time now and maybe people need some new ideas and some new material to use.

As I said I don't use much addons but some of the mods are just simply brilliant because the change the outlook of the whole game when used, not just a single weapon. I'm taling about 'must have' mods like  SEB Nampack 2, BAS Delta/Ranger pack, FDF Finnish Defence Forces total conversion mod,...  ;)

I personally try to avoid singular addons (eg. An SA80 addon), especially ones that are just new versions of a BIS thing (i saw an M16 a while back... yes, an M16a2 ...  ::) ), however i do enjoy some of the better made addons with lots to play with in just the one download (BAS has come up with some gold with their Rangers, the Helos aint bad either).

I do, however avoid a lot of addons like the plague, and as a mission reviewer, i pray to god that my next review won't be one requiring 20 downloads, each one something stupid like "a slightly better G36 than the one in the game", or something horrible that no one in their right mind would want to use as an addon.

Thats my opinion anyway.

A long time ago that was fine, but playing a 2 year old game can get a little boring.

Well made addons, like the ones by BAS, help keep the game alive and fresh.

Addons like these are better than the standard BIS units and vehicles and therefore enhance the game.

Too many addons in one mission, on the other hand, are a turn off.

The more addons a mission has, the less it's likely to be downloaded.

It's all about finding the right balance.  And where possible, sticking to the same addons for all the missions you make.  That way somebody downloading the addons for one of your missions can play MORE than one mission.

 :)

I see.

And the mortar soldier is an unofficial addon?  I thought it came with the game!  It must be a mod I missed...

Hallo,

basically you are correct. Of course there is that very bad thing that without the editorupgrade he (Gunslinger or Kegety) you could not even use the object BIS included in the game. And without them the missions get boring very fast.

The other thing is, if i make a "normal" mission, i always try to make a AddOn free mission (like the Clean Sweep Remake). If i make a total conversion mission (with SEB Nam e.g.) it is not possible to make a AddOn free version.

Although i think they are a lot of AddOn free missions already. Why should i spent my time in making the 51th "Assault that city" mission. But if i make "BAS Rangers assault Mogadishu" it is something new. I hope you got the point.

Greetings

Matthew, the riflemortar soldier is an original addon. If I remember correctly it's been in the game since version 1.0.
When I mentioned mortars I ment ground mounted heavy mortars, not the riflemortars  ;)

Addons are splitted to me. On the other hand they make a mission feel "fresh", but on the other hand I think my OFP don't like too manya addons. I got this lag that I can't get ride off, think it's all the addons I have downloaded. I've got a quite strong comp (1 GHZ, 512 MB RAM, Geforce 128 MB) and with low vidieo options(900 visibility, low detail level, 1024x768 32-bit) but it still lags, so I'm trying to avoid addons, especially the new one's that I'm only going to use one time. I'm trying to delete some of my addons but it's bloody hard cause they're all so good, and if they aren't they got wierd names and you are afraid to delete them cause you think they're something even better than the last one... :-\

But if i make "BAS Rangers assault Mogadishu" it is something new.

Yeah Kuro - BHD is really something new  ;D

just kiddin'

When i make mpmissions, i try to stick on the official stuff,
to keep the playability of these maps on high level. My experience told me that it can take a whole evening to get
the other loons to download all the required addons, if there
are too much in a mish.

Singleplayer maps IMHO are open for addons, as nobody
will have to wait in the background, while the users are
downloading the necessary addons.

I was also in the meaning that no_addons is better than
addons, but there are soooo many kewl addons out these times
so that i also couldn't resist of start using them.

BAS - LSR (best what russia has to offer against BAS), SEB_nam,
and_a_whole_lotta_more_addons.

I for myself have a couple of different shortcuts, according to
their use of -mod folders, so that if i want a clean editor, i start
up a clean shortcut, and the same goes for the other way
around.

I think yes you have  :)

http://members.cox.net/johnnylump/OFPLinks.html

Scroll down to the Soviet addons and watch out for:

GRU Troopers (By Laser. Part of Laser's Russian Special Forces pack.)

:edit - hang on - at the link above you would have to get
them in two parts (GRU Troopers and Naval Infantry).

better get the whole pack from OFP.cz:

http://ofp.gamezone.cz/index.php?sekce=unofaddons/units

search for: Russian Federation Special Forces - by Laser

::edit - i can't figure out why the "/units" at the link above
is not part of the link - anyway - just copy/past the whole
linke (inlcuding /units) into your browser address field and
you should be there.

Sorry, if i'm doing wrong with posting summit like advertisement
here - i would have sent Kuro a PM but then again i thought
these russian guys could be useful for more ppl than only
for Kuro  ;)
