An ACCURATE artillery demo
« on: 18 Oct 2003, 20:15:48 »
Other artillery scripts all seem to have some significant drawback or other.

This one takes all the best bits from other scripts and makes good use of them.

Map Marker targeting, Accurate ranging, Accurate terrain height compensation, quick and easy to command, customisable fire pattern, easily scalable and re-locatable, infinate/standard ammo, uses real tanks with real shells, see them hear them incomming!, Individual targeting for dispersed artillery
Try it and try the others - you'll see what I mean!

Description and history documentation can be viewed at the following location:

http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/smaluniverse/Artillery.htm

It was too big to be included.

Credits:
Malboro and Foster for earlier Artillery scripts that have been plundered for advancement of this idea (recognise this Demo Mission?)

Razorwings18 for the terrain height calculation method in his Skiing demo.

SnYpir for the elements of the ‘user marker' target indication method.

All on GameSpy for helping me kick ideas about and offering other viewpoints on my failing ideas.

*****************************
Development History:
V1.12:
Removed 'SetDir' for artillery units - not required and eliminates 'Position Error:Correcting' message

Fixed 'InfinateAmmo' flag - now removes magazines before adding another.

Added hints as an introduction to use.
******************************

Currently working on:
Multi Player considerations.

Hmmm? I don't really understand how to use your script, and when I actually get it to work I get a radio msg saying something like "Error 0.0009147881247921 adjusting 1" or something. And have you asked the authors of other scripts if you could use parts of their scripts?

The 'error' you refer to is normal, it is the AI correcting for poor performance on the first attempt to target, refining its position.

I don't claim any credit for the previous scripters ideas or work, the credit goes to where it is due.  The items wilfully plagurised are from demo's and tutorials - I'm sure the originators would agree, there's no point in re-inventing a perfectly good wheel.

A user manual is available on request for this particular implementation, but it is really quite simple - place a marker on the map and then use the radio to order fire!.

I tried the demo, very nice; does this work ok in multiplayer?  The client/server issues seem to spoil some of these types of efforts:((

One more question.  I'm trying to use this with another gun, and unoffcial add on 219S (Russian tracked howizer).  I got it to fire, but rounds are always short, I also don't see the normal bearing correction message, any ideas?

Yeah, ranges are only accurate for the M60 at the moment.

The documentation (that you can have if you want) describes a method of building up a range table manually using a chopper and a tank on a sandbank!.

You should be able to devise your own range table for other type of armour.
It might be worth building up a library for such if there is much interest.

Not tried it MP, and yes I agree with the client/server view.

MP capability is a worthy development IMHO, and I will commence study for that development next.

Suggestions/cautions/experiences regarding scripting for client server integrity would be welcome.

I would greatly appreciate the documentation and info on making range tables (if that is separate).  I hope to use this in a new OFP development called Project Grozny,

Take a look at this documentation :

http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/smaluniverse/Artillery.htm

I wanted to include it with the post but the pics and diagrams made it too big.
