SummaryViet Cong forces have been spotted moving into a village during the night. They seem to have gone in to steal food and supplies. Unfortunately they decided to stay. |

Review by MachoManOverviewThe Overview was flawless, a good in-game picture with a white BIS-style border and a short story telling me this was going to be a Vietnam era mission & I was going to find some VC. IntroThis mission comes with two intros. One before we receive our mission which describes what our enemy is up to, another one after the briefing which shows where I'm at. Both are of good (camera) quality and fairly short. The first shows some Vietnamese killing each other. Now this is generally where I start whining about how I don't like an in-game intro which I can't skip, but I'm not going to do that this time; The intro was, as I said before, short. The author also had the bright idea to include a save point after the second intro and included some nice music, works for me! BriefingNow this might be the best briefing ever! Ok, that may be a bit over the top, but it is a very good briefing. On page one I find a very good BIS-style description with some markers and two very clear objectives. The text includes a link to another page where we find a very detailed description of the situation. On the notes page we find something which seems to be a dictionary telling me I'm green, very green. I want to be a 1337 sniper, too bad for me, good for the mission! Thank god the briefing states this is going to be a walk in the park, we all know that's not gonna happen! MissionI start at the beginning of a route which was mentioned in the briefing, so I start following it. After a couple of minutes of hiking ... boom ... now what the ^&%$ was that. Scared, I take cover under the nearest bush expecting some T54 to come charging at me, but no, no tank visible, more of my men die, mortars? Nope. I check my map; it's a minefield, ouch. So I crawl along while more of my men die. I have just three men left, before I even encounter any VC. This is going to be hard. So I move along, through more fields, until just I and my buddy survive. You can guess what happens the first time I encounter VC, I die. So the second time I do the exact same thing and notice it's not going to work and start moving through the water, with just one friend left. When I reach the first enemy I kill them all and move while calling in support, I suspect more resistance in the village. The village turns out to be quite empty, I just find one guy. Armor comes rolling in and some APCs die, well too bad for them. Meanwhile, my last friend dies and it's just me and the tank. It seems to be time to call in the cowboys, so I call in a chopper, while I move on. The tank moves too fast and gets killed, while I move on. I move towards its burning carcass and spot loads of VC, now it's just me and my M60 (nope, not the tank, the mg), this is gonna hurt. In comes the cowboy, guns blazing! This makes me one happy camper and I decide to use my gun and just sit it out and wait until the cowboy does his job, I take a strategic position, kill a couple of VC. When I think I'm about done, I notice nothing happens. Hmm, it's one of them large east not present missions, darn. So I spent the next 30 minutes searching the area for lone VC. That's no fun. I succeed, constantly fearing being killed by a lone Rambo. Outro(s)I get airlifted, but not carrying my own gun, by now I have an RPD, this looks wrong. It's short, but functional. Overall(Review Date: Dec 2004) Overall a good mission by The-Architect, although it does have one big "flaw"; the long search for remaining VC is not fun. The mines are also a bit overdone. But as I said before, a good, action-packed mission, which includes everything from custom sounds to reinforcements, everything a good mission needs. |
