Thompson 1928 ("Tommy Gun")
« on: 10 Nov 2005, 14:23:47 »
Thompson 1928 - "The Chicago Typewriter"

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Version: 1.1 Beta (updated)
Required game version: OFP - Resistance v1.85
Other add-ons required: None

Weapon name: Wbt_Tommy
Magazine name: Wbt_TommyDrumMag

Features:

This addon features custom sounds, custom magazine model for dropping, custom iron sight, custom gear pictures.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

This is the (in)famous Thompson 1928, popular among gangsters in the 1920-30's.

I made this addon because I wanted an old school Tommy Gun with drum mag rather than the newer WW2 version that seem to be the only one available for download. Also I wanted to share it with the community since I've seen some people looking for this gun on the boards.

It is my first addon ever, but I'm quite pleased with the result. I'm thankful for feedback, bug reports, etc.

Thank you.

Wildebeest.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

The zip contains "wbt_tommy.pbo" (addon), "wbt_TommyExample.Intro.pbo" (example mission) and "ReadMe.txt".

hehe, nice gun, even the simple demo mision is fun ;)

i've got two suggestion though:
1. make the drum rounder in gunner view. even if that lod grows by like 50 vertices it doesn't make much difference in terms of performance, cos after all it's only the gunner view lod.
2. give the gun a geo lod. it looks kind of odd when half of the gun disappears in the other policeman in the demo mission.

apart from that:   very good for a first addon.

Thanks for your feedback remcen. I'm gonna make the drum rounder in pilot view as you say. I have to add a pilot view lod first... whops forgot about that. Gonna have to look into the "geo lod" bit too. Thanks :)

Wow, this is a nice weapon.  Textures look great.  Sounds are good.  I love the difference in dispersion between auto and semi-auto mode.  The model looks good.  The drum and the geo-lod are the only things that really need adjusting, and even the drum doesn't look bad as it is.  You did a really nice job, here.

I do have one suggestion.  Add a police unit to the game with this gun as his primary weapon.  And maybe, if you want, you can add a civilian or two as well.

But anyway, nice job, I really can't say enough good things about this gun.

EDIT:
I just noticed the custom dropped mag model.  Looks nice!

crosshairs in optic view? what game did you play? there's no crosshair when you hit 'V' in ofp.
but speaking of which: you could add the muzzle flash to the optic, too. then the gun would be just perfect :)

Finally, I good Tommy gun in OFP. There have been countless requests for one of these in the past   ;D

The gun's very nice. If it's your first addon for OFP then it's an exellent result. Shame you can only carry 3 mags at once, thats only 150 bullets total!  ;)

I found it quite hard to hit the enmy in the demo mission. Maybe thats because I was shooting standing up, but I have to agree with Big Boss Marcus.

Also, I think the textures might looks better a bit darker, like these

But thats just my opinion  ;)

Good job

Well, the magazines are quite large and the player unit in the example mission is a civilian and those don't have much gear capacity. :)

Nope, just like the UZI SMG this weapon has a crescent shaped cock lever at the top. Maybe it was this you saw?

In the meantime, take a look at this clip showing a real tommy gun in action (it's a bit cheesy... like typical flag waving redneck entertainment):

Looks nice and all, but the guy holds it weird. the gun should be further forward and up a little.

What do you mean by this? The only part that I see disappearing into the policeman's arm is the back of the stock. And who cares about this as long as he's holding both the handles more or less properly? And I have never seen a gun with a geo lod. Is this to force the gun away from his body? Wouldn't that make him hold it very very strange? Well, I don't get it. Hehe.  ::)

No, the geo lod prevents the gun from going through another person's body.  Right now if you walk up to another unit, the gun goes through that unit.  A geo lod would prevent this.

I think it's quite good where it's at.  The man's placement of his hand at the trigger is perfect.  I would advise against changing it.

I have never seen any of BIS's guns with a geo lod, but then, I haven't looked at them all.   ;D

sure, the trigger thing is fine. but the front hand doesn't hold the forward grips, and the stock embeds itself into the guys shoulder.

Thompson 1928 v1.1 beta
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Hello everyone!

Time for the next version!

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Some changes have been made, hopefully to the better:

A pilot view has been added.

The magazine is rounder.

Added muzzle flash to the optics.

The textures are darker, except for the wood.

Added details on the top of the receiver in pilot view.

I decided not to mess around too much with the placement of the gun. I've come to the conclusion that the shape of the gun prevents it from lying perfect in your hand, or not cut into your arm. I think it's OK as it is.

I updated the example mission, so you no longer play as a civilian.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Here's a screenshot of the gun in first person.

Cheers.

the accuracy is well done too, as it seems like a good comparison to the accuracy of a real one, bullets all over the place :D

you should release this on the bis forums when you are happy with a final, there are many people looking for an addon like this

Yeah, I know. I'm currently trying to include a stick mag version so that you can switch between stick and drum but I'm having problems getting it to work properly. I've looked at the Suomi SMG from the FDF WW2 mod, which has both stick and drum, but that addon doesn't work as it should either. If an  AI is holding it the model sometimes lack a magazine and stuff like that.

I think I'm gonna release the tommy gun as it is. Besides, when people want an old tommy gun they want the gangster version, right? I think I'm gonna release it as you say on the bis forums and on ofp.info.

i noticed that too with the fdf, maybe having two different gun models instead of two different magazines, i dont know if it would still be posibble to switch between clip and drum mags though if you did that
