Does the game still recognize units, even when they're dead?

That depends...

Triggers won't 'see' them, but if you have named the dead, you still may have some 'control' over them...

Try it like this:
Make a trigger activated by, say, radio Alpha.
Then on that triggers on act. field put deadDude setDamage 0

Then put a soldier on the map and name him deadDude, shoot him and press 0-0-1, and he should bounce back to life...

But as you didn't say how you would like to 'use' the dead so... ::)
