Training Weapon
« on: 03 Jun 2003, 23:58:48 »
Ive had this idea about creating a training weapon for OFP that has no damage capabilitys.  The idea of this is so that instead of cheating so that you cannot take any damage, all you have to do is equip your soldiers (MP/SP) with this weapon and then just play for as long as you want shooting each other for as long as you want without running the risk of dying and having to start the mission again.
I agree, this addon would not have a lot of use for many missions and at first seems to sound a little daft, but im convinced that it will make clan/squad training a hole lot better (and longer!) so that you can concentrate on tactics and manovers while still haveing the rush of coming under fire from the enemy.
Tell me what you think, and anyone who would be able to help me with creating this idea contact me at:

While I see the use of it, it would need some sort of system to let you know if you had been hit; you can't rely on OFP's blood texturing for one, since it doesn't "come off." Like make the person scream or something... but I don't know how even that could be done, since screaming doesn't always occur (although there's this one scream that is so fucking funny lol) So maybe if it did some damage? Like a helluva lot less??? Since I believe 1 is death, how about 0.05 or something as a suggestion.

Few ideas here (http://www.ofpec.com/yabbse/index.php?board=12;action=display;threadid=8834), Kooky is trying to do the same thing for RSF training.

I meant to get someone to do an SA80 with the yellow BFA on the barrel, and then make it so that it does 0.00000000001 damage or somthing like that, because then you get the blood puff when you shoot someone, but there's no real danger, unless you pin someone down and rattle him in the face with the rifle butt  ;D

But, Kaliyuga suggested (in the other thread) that a trigger that covers the map and heals a unit once it's taken a certain amount of damage. I tried, but I'm a bit dim so I couldn't get it to work properly  :-[

How about just making some score counter?

And make some AT that just disable the thing...

I see what you mean gothicv but isnt there like a blood puff as you get hit aswell as the actual damage model? Im sure I see that when i get hit!
But yeah I think that is a very important part of gettting a good training weapon, and its something ill be looking into.

wait you want to put MILES in this game?
oh god I hate MILES!!
beeep beeep beep..
ehhh sooo annoying!!
freaking lazer tag.
it should not be veyr hard to do MILES. you use normal firing then make a hit counter that tracks a score. or respawns the tagged person. but then you need ot have him beep everytiem he is hit or a "bullet" hit him.
but still MILES?
eh

No, we don't mean MILES. We just need guns that fire incredibly weak rounds so they impact, but do no real damage, for MP training purposes.

lol and how is that NOT MILES?

Training is what transforms an ordinary man into a soldier. Training helps soldiers develop skills and confidence, honing combat effectiveness to a razor's edge. The U.S. Army employs MILES technology to provide tactical engagement simulation for direct fire force-on-force training. In Americas Army, you will have the opportunity to join several missions that include MILES training exercises as well as live-fire scenarios. The key difference that they're getting at is simply:

A) MILES = no damage, no cry of pain, no impact noise, no blood, no death, only beeps

B) The proposed system = cries of pain, impact noises, blood spray, no damage, no death

Same principle for both ideas, but different methods.

This idea would actually be a lot easier to introduce than MILES, and more effective. :)

me either why not jsut make a respawning script?
that would be easier and more realistic

It's for MP squad training purposes, so people can work on tactics and marksmanship etc. without having to respawn every five seconds.

And why, pray tell, is getting killed and magically being brought to life at a predefined location more realistic than having a weapon that essentially fires blanks?  ???

it would be easer then having to rework EVERY weapon.
of course i am sure there has to be a way to just write a script to remove bullent damage. and to count points ie a hint that was a hit and how much damage it would have made.

This isn't about what's easy, it's about what works best. I made a training mission for my squad with respawns, but it messes with the flow of an attack when you have to stop because someone's respawned back at the start point with a BIS M16 and one mag.

A script would be a better solution than making a weapon pack, I agree, and I don't think it's neccesary to re-work every weapon (my squad tends to use about five or six different guns on regular occasions) when a basic selection of rifle, machine gun, sniper rifle, pistol would do.

If a script could be made that stops bullets from doing damage but making a message come up (perhaps in the radio chat bar) saying who had been hit or something, I'd be happy.

Either that or we just all run round shouting "BANG!"  :P
I would have thought it would be pretty simple to just drop the level of damage in the config, in fact you may be able to add a new magazine class so that you could have a mix of live and blank firing exercises in the same mission (just make sure you know what you're firing though ;))

I've just had a quick look at BIS's commented config and I'm guessing but I reckon this is the bit you'd need to set:
Quote
hit=9;indirectHit=2;indirectHitRange=0.1;
Could someone who knows about weapon configs verify this?

I hope you mean the limited damage, not the shouting bang option, not even the TA have to do that anymore  ;D

Heh, my Dad told me about an excercise he was on when he was in the Junior Leaders (kind of a pre-training organisation for potential NCOs in the Armoured Corps before they joined their regiments), where they only had five blank rounds each, after that they had to scream "BANG!!" at the top of their voices.

Kooky do you mean by Training weapon that it does very little or no damage if that is the case then i shall make one for you just tell me which weapon(s) you want.

The weapons have to use default models.

It's okay mate, I've got a couple of guys from my MP squad making an SA80 for training purposes (I'll be sure to post a link up here when it's done).

Cheers for the offer though

Allthough I don't really see the point of this addon, it would work great for creating scripted cut scenes and movies...

I tried getting this to work ages ago, when I was working on a mod. We needed a cutscene of troops on the same side on an exercise shooting at each other, and didn't want piles of bodies. The mod fizzled out, then I forgot about it. Right now though, it's going to be handy for multiplayer training, so teams can work on fire and movement with players shooting at them, but without constant respawns. Just a good way of getting the tactics right and seeing how good a shot someone is without needing an endless supply of targets.
