Cosmetic changes to the forum
« on: 22 Nov 2005, 22:40:07 »
Don't panic, you're not going mad.    Yes we have changed the order of the boards in the forum.    All boards retain the same function as they had before:   none have been added, and none have been taken away.

The Editors Depot, Addons Depot and Missions Depot sections now have their boards in a consistent order, with the boards in each section arranged logically.    This will make your life easier and happier in the long run.   I know the change is upsetting, but you'll be used to it in a day or two.    In a week's time you'll be saying that this arrangement is better and in a fortnight you'll happily swear that it's always been like this.

The Recruitment Lounge gets its own section now too.   Isn't that nice?

Questions, comments, yadda yadda yadda, you know what to do.

Me reckons: Switch places with Editing/Scripting: Advanced and Editing/Scripting: Cutscenes.

Also arrange the boards so that they are located in the same way as the navbar on the top, i.e. Addons Board first, Editors second, Missions third, (Xbox fourth?) and Recruitment last.

My two cents.

Yes I thought about the Advanced and Cutscenes that way, but the advanced cutscene questions go on the Advanced board too so it seemed logical to put them that way round.

Hadn't thought about making it the same as the buttons along the top.   Which do you think would be less traumatic?   Changing the order of buttons, or the order of forum sections?

We'll leave Xbox near the top for now, since its new and we want it to be easy for noobs to find.

Let me put it this way: If you rearrange the navbar you'd probably wake up as the director-guy in The Godfather. Capice? ;D

I wouldn't mind the Addons Board on top at all, actually. OFPEC could certainly need a face-lift on the Addon Section.

OK, decision time.   It's all going to be left as it is for now.  (There will be further changes to the forum in the future.)

You're right Armsty, we can't change the navbar at the top.   And although in some ways it would be nice to have the forum sections reflect it better, it doesn't actually work in practice.

We want to keep the Recruitment Board near the top because it is still relatively new and down at the bottom it will get lost since its only one board.   We also need to keep the Elite boards near the top so that Xboxers, new to ofpec, can find them easily.    There isn't a navbar option for Elite and there isn't going to be one any time soon.    Conversely there isn't going to be a forum section for the Intelligence Depot.

In other words, when you look at the detail, and the differing requirements of the navbar and the forum sections, they don't actually match up very well.

So thanks for the idea but we can't really do anything with it this time I'm afraid.

hmmm,
I like it as it is now, one thing that stays in my head all the time is the SMF "Bookmark" mod.
I know I mentioned this before but the thread disapeared in a black hole.

There is a mod for the SMF board that allows users to Bookmark their most visited threads or allows moderators and admins to bookmark threads they keep linking and linking again.

Since OFPEC is using a modded version of the SMF default theme this mod should work fine on this board.
Maybe you wanna check it out and hopefully you install this package:

The topic you already mentioned this in, is located here.

A little searching would have revealed its location easily.   :P

I don't know what they did to make it disappear. But I know how I did it at some point while I was testing SMF for my own fun - just removed it from one of the template files. I bet that's how it was done for OFPEC too, because it's so easy. A lot of other stuff can easily get removed too while you're at it...  :P

The automatic install failed, (ie to the default theme and the sources folder), so at this stage I'm at the ugly position where I'm going to have to edit the files manually.

It can be done, it's just going to take a little bit of time... auto installers are great, but not much fun when they don't work :P

That's a bit trickier... you need to go through your files like template.index.php, display.php etc. and remove (well... comment out might be safer) all references to the [Count Post] function. I found a thread about it with much better instructions than mine on the SMF boards. I'll see if I can dig it up for you ;)

I would very much appriciate this mate...thx

About the Bookmark Mod,
weird that you got a error when you install to the default SMF theme.
I would have to check on my board(s), but sometimes this mods work just fine even if you get the error:
"./Themes/default/index.template.php  -   Test failed"

However, you better not risk it after OFPEC just got back on track ;)
You all doing a great job as it is imho... ;)

Thanks mate...

Yeah, what really annoyed me was that all the tests were successful before the install ran.

I ran that, and nothing changed. I then realised that it had modded some files, and not others. Anyway, we'll get there... just going to take a bit of time (it's a wee way down the list of things to sort out at the moment, but it'll be back up to the top soon enough ;)).

As for removing the post count, try this thread on the smf forums.
There were a couple of other files to change in addition to that (mainly stats based ones, ie show posts when displaying user stats etc.), but that gives you a very good place to start :)

I know you guys don't want bug reports yet, because you're still actively working on all things, BUT..
The 'view all members' tab has still the default blue color. See attachment.
