Let's Set A Standard!
« on: 29 Sep 2003, 16:20:25 »
Hi all,

For some time now I have noticed a lot of discussion based on people wanting to create their own addons... heck I am even one of them, but I have noticed one thing that is so true.

We keep duplicating the same addons  :(

The purpose of this thread is to gain people opinions of user made addons that could be considered at this moment in time, the standard for all types of addon whether they are weapons or vehicles that would be played by all and excepted as the "norm."

I also want to see what people think about other addons out there today to help eliminate the 5000 addons people could have with many of those duplicates.

I think the subject of this thread might qualify?

http://www.ofpec.com/yabbse/index.php?board=12;action=display;threadid=13169

I had to create an addon just so I could use, what I would consider to be basic animations. Rather than it just being script based.

Plus I can take this opportunity to apologise for using OFPEC's acronym, without asking permission. Not that anyone said anything or was that bothered :), but it did occur to me after the event  :-[

Good idea... don't have time to add things to the list at the moment as I'm off to a class in a few, but I did want to comment on this part of what you said:

I also want to see what people think about other addons out there today

My two biggest pet peeves about addons that are being produced are:

 1) People who gut other peoples addons for textures/config.cpp/model parts, etc (more often that not without permission), and then claim that they "made" an addon.  If you can't make your own addons there's no shame in that but please don't steal from others ;)

 2) People who don't have an original thought in their head when it comes to addons. (or anything for that matter)  ::)   In other words.....   "I can't think of anything on my own, so lets rip off some movie/tv show/book/cartoon/video game and put it into OFP ::) "
And while we're at it if it's another video game that we want to play in OFP ::)   lets just steal all the models and textures we can so we don't have to have any actual talent to make addons

Just my 2 cents on the addon situation as I see it

Iwess (and all others)

What i think the OFP Community is lacking in, is addons of motorbikes...

NO OFFENSE BAS - YOUR KLR-250 IS AWESOME NONE THE SAME.

But seriously can u imagine a Ducati 999 Paso in OFP on a high spec machine ?

The textures shouldnt be too much of a problems - a badge and one main colour will do the trick..
What do you think guys ?

What do you think about some of these as an addon

A Ducati

A Kawasaki

I think my idea got lost somewhere.... I set out to try and compile a list of addons already made for the community that people thought were set at an exceptional level and would be considered the "norm" for people to use. I don't know about you but I don't want to have duplicate amount of M4's or F18's in my addon folder.

I just want one Mh60 or M113 that doesn't belong to BIS  ;)

Wow, I realize there are a lot of duplicates out there the more I think of it.

Hmm.

Armored Vehicles:

-M1A1 : MAF-CWC(I think, haven't downloaded tanks in a while.

-T72 : MAF-CWC

-HMMVEE : MAF-CWC

-BRDM : MAF-CWC

Eh, more later.  ;)

Here's some new standards, which should become commandments of OFP addon making:
"Thou shalt not make another M4 addon."
"Thou shalt not steal weapon textures from SOF II."

Any more suggestions?

Amen to that bro..what's funny though is that NO ONE has made a "vanilla" M4 u know the ones MOST of the army uses that is only semi and 3 round bust capable...but oh well we have enough M4s for OFP :-) how bout
"Thou shalt not make ridiculous mods you know will never be completed"
"Thou shalt not build islands that aren't fully functional" ie ai can't use the airports
"Thou shalt not build another BHD mod"
"Thou shalt not build somthing that has been done near perfect already just for your mod(that probaly will never be done anyway) and use the bs excuse (i think I can do it better..)"

my ideas :-)

Another one I agree with, why re-invent the wheel?  ::)

Honor thy BAS/Inquisitor/Fliper M4s.

Thous shalt not make multiple mods dealing with the same type of combat in the same area in the same time period (Cough, cough, all you WWII mods out there ;D ).

Thou shalt not make maps that cause significant performance probems with a 3.2GHz processor!
