Sniper Cover

I was thinking of sniper cover, and how some places are green some gray, white and what ever...  So maby there could be a way of having a sniper match the ground color.  There was a way to do it in Half-Life (yes i know this is not half life) and it happend when some one chose to do it(like a action menu in OPF), the ground color was gotten and then a texture was loaded up that matched the ground color.  Maby some thing like that, find a place to go prone, then change your color, then whate ever you wanted to do.

I dont know if it could be done in a script or in the sniper's .cpp or even at all.

What do you guys think?

i'm not a coder.
but i'm guessing it'd be something like this

get the game engine to recognise the ground tile texture, then rap it around the character. but it would have to make you lie still till u took it off, coz to do that in real time could be very very laggy
