Back to Nam, we don't ever leave
« on: 28 May 2005, 23:59:23 »
Hello community,

I'm thinking of ideas for a vietnam air mission, preferably using an armed heli or plane. (F4 Phantom, AH1J, AH1G, Huey ARA?)

What sort of cool newish ideas could I implement?
One idea I'm leaning on is a mainly CAS sort of mission, get down and dirty or somethin like that.  :P

Spraying Agent Orange or dropping Napalm? That could be some nice story twitcher about the morals of the war.

Hey Guilty,

well recently I thought of an idea:

You're in the recon platoon. The modern use of recon platoons is mainly to prepare the LZ for the main force, thus doing most of the job, right :P.

So your platoon ( 3 squads, 3 Hueys, 2 Cobras ) would land in an LZ where enemy presence is unknown. You have to make sure that it is safe and eliminate any hostile forces. Thats the objective, well it will turn out different.

Mission: Just after you disembark, a mortar barrage starts together with fire coming from all over the place. You can call in air support, artyllery, etc. I thought also that a script for taking the wounded out via chopper and one that makes you survive more :Pcould be nice. When your numbers would get below a certain line, then you would have to call in extraction cause your men would just have enough ( morale, ammo, panic stuff ).

what do you think?

Yea, I wanted to leave them poor grunts to the AI. ;D

Tomasz, I don't get it, are you the recon force jumping out of the heli to secure it for more ppl or are you going in on foot before to clear the area?

@dmakatra
Hmmm, the F4 I have, has naplam, as your cobra is being shot up by multiple Mgers a F4 streams in and drops some jelly. Maybe... prolly a cutscene or intro... :)

Agent Orange, refresh my memory, was that the stuff that killed all plant life or something? :P

Yeh, they deployed it to kill the plant life so they could see all the VCs hiding. It sorta messed up everything after the war, like sick children or even sick US Soldiers. You can compare it to a nuke but in spray form 'cause it has similar effects to radation. I think so anyway. :P

EDIT: What? I didn't do nothing. Honest! ::)

Well, that'd be a bit time consuming with 100 or so object 1111 setdammage 1 or something like that... :P ;D :o
I think I'll stick with naplam. Naplam is always fun for those not under it. :P

I think I've formed a sort of general idea now, you are the pilot of the second cobra escorting 2-3 hueys and later providing some CAS for the infantry. However, there are some little special effects I want throw in, the F4 will make an appearance. (I wonder what he'll do...) Of course the mission won't be easy niether, maybe I might set as early nam and have some Mig21s scaring the load out of your pants when the F4s come in to save you. Oooo finally some ideas.  8) ;)

Hey I have a question, I know the NVA used a bunch of old and newish soviet stuff for military equipment. (AK47, T55...) But does anyone know if they used T34s? I've heard of the NVA/vietcong using M1 garands and mosin nagant WWII rifles so I dunno if they had vehicles from WWII.

Answers appreciated...:)
Blah blah blah.... :-*

Yep the t34-85 was still in service in the NVA, as in many armies back then.

/slap Armstry

If it is a functional part of a mission in progress, and only if it clearly is and doesn't take over the entire topic, there is no problem.

Touchy today...
Well, I'm off to put them scary T34's in. Now I'm thinking of making a followup mission with the tanks. Damn I get distracted easily. :P

This mission idea sounds very good , and here are a few idea's from myself.

Cobra pilot flying cover for a huey assault force. (I read a book a while back which describes how the cobras hovered around at a few thousand feet and when a contact was made they would roll out of the sky in lines and plaster the area with cannon and rocket fire, could be fun diving into combat ;D.)

Littlebird pilot (loach's as they were called in the 'nam) Reccing different LZ's and coordinating attack choppers and jets.

Dustoff pilot  - doing medevacs and maybe getting into some crazy mess, getting shot down.

CSAR chopper - rescue the phantom pilot from behind the lines before the 'cong get to him.

Chinook pilot - carrying artilery shells and food, water and troops into a surrounded base eg pli mai (sp?) special forces base.

Hope some of these are what your thinking of.  Happy mission making.

Hey GI-YO,
I especially like the dropping in thing. I wanted to use the cobras since I haven't seen those used much. I think I may use that idea since it turns out I made it near suicide to fly over the hot area once.

Too many machine guns = no flying time :'(

Not sure how to fix that...
Plus the hueys have got to land first. Going to be tougher than I thought. ::)

Well, you just remove it after the first couple of units have landed! There will be plenty of targets on land, so the MG's may forget about you.

How is this for an idea?

You are a Spetz Naz team with Viet Cong scouts, sent into the jungle escorting a Soviet pilot so he can steal a US Cobra. Once it's stolen it has to be flown back to the North. You could build on it by making the Spetz Naz have to take down air defenses along the flight route so that the chopper could get back safely. I'm sure you could beef the mission up with your own ideas.

I was going to do this mission myself but couldn't be arsed.
