Roving Roadblocks
« on: 21 Mar 2005, 14:38:48 »
I was watching the BBC news and saw a story following Brittish troops flying around in choppers setting up road blocks at random locations in Iraq.

so this is my mission idea

Using the CoC command engine you have two squads (BAS Rangers) and two black hawks at your disposal. you will be on a desert map

ok there will be loads of civilian traffic  on the roads including some armed militia in civilian vehicles. your job will be to fly to different locations and set up a road block as a car aproches you must make a command desision hold fire or take it down. there will be some pop up objectives i.e. HQ tells you of possible suspects in an area so you go to the loaction. some will be militia some will be car bombs. most will just be civilians so make sure you target the right cars. serious penalties will be awarded if you shoot the innocent

Not much of the map will be taken up by the enemy. your troops will have High visability operations going on, and there will be a network of working freindlies, carrying out supply missions, support and with a whole buch of atmospheric ops, with choppers picking up troops from one base flying somewhere else comming back e.t.c.

There may also be other things to do i.e. you may have to respond to different things maybe escort convoys or rescues and defending all the while trying to complete your main orders.

The main point is this is a day to day operation rather than a big push or large mission woth loads of scripts, these are the ops your men have to do all the time. you are in command of your platoon do the objectives in order of priority and assert your own desisions and tactics.

This is a really nice idea and quite original - the tension in the mission would come from not quite knowing what to expect. There are a few missions where there is a similar plot (Carelian Pie in FDF Mod, for example) , but nothing anywhere near as complex as what you are suggesting.

The only problem that I can see is that I have experimented with various ways of making heavy civilian traffic and have never quite got to grips with it. The AI is almost as bad at driving as me (avoid London when I am having lessons  :-[ ). I have a nearly finished mission that was supposed to have a French Connection style chase and it wound up as only about four or five vehicles because otherwise the AI would crash, steer off the road and generally get hopelessly tangled in a decidedly unrealistic way (I have managed to get some cows to stampede entertainingly across the road though - maybe another job for your long suffering Rangers - catching or rescuing farm animals ;D).

There may be someone who is a better editor/scripter than me out there (what, really?  ;) ) who knows a bit more about managing traffic. Any takers?

I have made the basis of the mission using STT Desert Malden, Bas Rangers,  General barrons editor upgrade, USMC symbols

this is what it has

the road running North and South between Airport  and Port has 2 convoy's continuously driving and stopping at Signals post , Delta Force base, Port and Airport.

there are 2 signals posts (Garrison 1 squad each), 1 observation post(Garrison 1 squad), 1 Port (Garrison 1 platoon), 1 Airport (Garrison 1 platoon), Delta base (Garrison 1 platoon), Ranger Base (Garrison 1 platoon, Player has control of 2 squads)

3 road block sites where different resistance troops try and pass to get to different freindly positions (signals post (west), Port (south) , airport (north))

after all 3 road blocks have been reached by player approx 15min's later;

delta force raid a town they need you (rangers) to provide rear guard during mission, to stop enemy from ambushing them while they are clearing town.  get there in your chopper ASAP.

After that;
A convoy heading west gets ambushed and needs escort out of hostile territory.

Random events that might happen;
convoy's going north and south between Port and airport may meet enemy troops, signals posts may get attacked, observation post to the west might get attacked.

future additions...

2 or 3 more day to day standard ops should be put in so that in between supporting delta force and rescuing convoy there are more tasks to complete giving 5-6 standard objectives and 2 special objectives...

Anyone know missions that Rangers would do during day to day operations?

Regards
Kendo

p.s. i forgot to say it uses the entire map! I really enjoy the openess of ofp and always thought that a major strength in any modern army is it's mobility. hence the idea of this mission. Plus alot of modern desert warfare doesn't have fixed/dugin positions so you have to go where the action is!

For those who have edited with The Bas_rangers, which insigna should i use? i.e. 10th mtn, etc??
