how do i exit flashpoint?
« on: 18 Jan 2004, 17:58:33 »
Bare with me, this isn't a dumb joke.

Is there any string or command that will exit flashpoint from IN the game, via a script etc.  ???

Or failing that, has anyone ever run into a seris of commands that will crash the game and exit back to windows - with no explanation whatsoever from the game or windows,

Pls reply

Cheers

No.......but these things can happen when a mission encounters problems like missing addons or badly configured addons.

Or the game runs into a fatal system error or no memory.

As The real Armstrong so delicately put it, why do you want to be able to exit flashpoint with a command.

I mean thats why good old Mr Gates invented the 'Alt'  'F4' combination.

However, like i always say, whatever floats ya boat, so if I run across it, I will tell ya

Sry, maybe i didnt make it clear enough

I'm making a mission at the moment, basicly this is how it goes

The player is set an objective,
and upon failing it (if he/she does) the the game will terminate with some special effects etc

Unfortunatly the other members of my group have forbiden me to disclose any more info, but TRUST me, i know it sounds crap, and a pain in the arse having to load it all up again and start again, but the player wont want to. - it is realy cool to watch. but at the moment we just have to alt-f4 it every time in the previews.

So if any one knows, maybe some clever person with experience in computer programing how it can be done, (Maybe based on how flashpoint exits, when clicking exit on the main menu), pls reply

Well I think its a terrible idea, but Im not one to not spead the knowledge.

The only way I can think of doing it is creating a drop particle script that loops for ever, it will eventually eat up all the computers memory and crash flashpoint.

I say again though;  Worst idea ever.

ok i probably shouldn't be telling u this, but here we go:

If u mess around with global variables long enough u will eventualy find one BIS already used, messing around with these can cause conflicts ant thus CTD's.

i'm not gonna explain it in detail, cause i'm not sure if i like what ur doing. but this info should be enough.

[icarus_uk] believe me i had the exact same reaction as you, if not worse, when the rest of the group told me what would happen. (I joined half way through), i thought they were just having a joke, but when jack (the project leader) showed me, i realy opened up my mind,

It dosen't contain any gore or pornography, or anything like that, but it makes you think...

I wish i could tell you more, but i can't even tell you the project name.

Hey man, if the game crashes I'm not gonna play that mission, you might need to do some stuff with the core gamefiles(like MachoMan suggested)and screw every1s OFP up, I suggest you find some other way.

Using a lot of memory till it crashes can cause severe damage to your comp, it might not only crash your OFP, it might crash your comp as well.

The only "peaceful" crash I can think of must be a description.ext problem. The problem with this is that it'll crash as soon as you start the game.

Look bigcheese,

No one here is against you, its just your making it very hard for us to understand why you want to crash the game,

As far as were concerned there is no reason whatsoever why any one would want to quit back into windows as a consequence to a mission!

Maybe if you told us more we could understand, but if the mission is as you say it is then you got me curious.

However the guys are right, a forced crash due to a program error can cause damage to ANY active file running at the same time, game crashes have been known to crash entire operating systems unintentionally - so I don't think should be messing around with it, and defiantly don't distribute it! – Unless you can secure an actual command that will quit out safely,

What your doing is like knocking someone out which a baseball bat who can’t sleep, It may do the job, but could cause brain damage – potential death!

But as far as im concerned I wont download anything that poses a potential threat to my PC, sry, nothing personal – I’m sure the mission itself is good.

ForceEnd finishes the mission, this chap crazily want to dump you back to windows.

The point of a game is to play it.  I dont think there would be anyone who would on purpose want to crash their game.  I have a feeling this is going to be one of those things that the people who are making it think its going to be really amazing, but no one else is going to even look at it.

bigcheese, I won't mock you  :P

I've been playing around with making addons recently, and lemme just say I've had many an experience with OFP crashing to the desktop with no explanation. You would need to make a custom addon for your mission, but it is possible to do exactly what you want (I know, unfortunately...  :( )

PM me and I can show you. But could I be let in on the secret then? I promise I wouldn't tell anybody!  ::)

guys, calm down a lil bit

I couldn't see bigcheese been asking anywhere in this
thread how to do damage to anyones pc.

All i could see was him asking for: how to make the game
ctd.

You all accuse him to want to make damage to other's pc's.
That's not what he was asking for.

Maybe someone could have just answered:

"No it's not possible to do what you want in a 100% secure
way without the risk of making damage to someone elses
pc - at least AFAIK"

The only scenario I can imagine this to work in would be a Matrix mod where you get 'unplugged'. Even then it's a bit extreme to quit the whole game. It kind of forces something on the user that they don't really want. Especially if they want to carry on playing a different mission without having to load the game again.

I really don't see why everyone thinks it would be so "harsh" to quit the program. Oh my god, is it that hard to simply open up ofp again? It's not like you can have anything up that you need to save or anything. Seeings how I don't think anyone has ever done this before, it could be a very unique and memorable effect. Depending on how/why it is implemented, of course.

I guess they simply consider CTD the fastest way to shut down Operation Flashpoint (loading and unloading ofp takes quite long on computers with less than 1Ghz)

might come in handy for those playing & editing OFP when they're not supposed to!  :-X

But then you still don't need to play the mission until
you reach the CTD point.

Anyway this may become (or is) a rather pointless discussion,
as i never said that it's good to have a radio-call-CTD.  :D

You know bigcheese, you make it very strange...
The fact is that you feel somewhat guilty for asking that... At first, there's absolutely no reason...

"at the moment we just have to alt-f4 it every time in the previews"
What would the Alt-F4 combination do, except quiting the game? Can you tell us what's this non-sense?... And how can crashing your computer produce such an effect?

"its just one of those things that no one believes until they see it"
Well, actually, telling us what it IS might be the first step to believing it or not...

Wow, I wonder how this old thread got dug up  :o

I already let BigCheese know how to get a consistent CTD with no error message or anything.

Quote
"at the moment we just have to alt-f4 it every time in the previews"
What would the Alt-F4 combination do, except quiting the game? Can you tell us what's this non-sense?... And how can crashing your computer produce such an effect?

What she is saying is that they want to make a cutscene where at one point, the game completely closes and exits in one fell swoop. It would look similar to what it looks like when you press alt-f4 (the program just closes). The only way to do this is to crash OFP, but the desire is to not have any error messages displayed after the program crashes, like "error, memory out of range" or something.

I know I'm not the only one who has ever made ofp CTD like this. One very simple way to do it is to run this line of script:

Code: [Select]
unit action["USER TYPE"]
I don't know what all this hysteria is about a CTD "damaging your computer". Haven't you ever had a program crash before? Like IE or something? Has it ever damaged your computer? I've crashed my OFP many, many times, and never have I damaged my computer because of it.

I don't understand why they have to alt-f4 the game to view the effect...
And you know I'm not against what they're trying to do, it's just that I don't understand...

I didn't notice that this thread was so old... is that cutscene already finished?

BTW:
Just to end a few little things:
If you call a .paa file (For Example in a TitleText defined in the description.ext)
which does not have the dimensions of 2^n, the game will crash

However it is clear that NO public misson should use a "crash to desktop".
For Pirvate missions, just me and my friends...well I personally wouldn't like
it either, but then there are strange people in this world.

@BibiPhoque

You don't have to alt-f4 to view the effect. BigCheese just wanted to see what it would look like if the game CTD'd, and since she didn't know how to do that, she was simulating a CTD by pressing alt-f4 at the time in the cutscene where the game was supposed to CTD.

i know this is probably really out of context now because

a) this thread is getting old
b) everyone agrees its kinda silly
c) its not really plausible/a good idea

BUT i did come across a bug with "removeallweapons" in an intro i was making whereby i gave this guy a handgun, got him to "do fire" and then took all his weapons away

for some reason flashpoint disagreed with this and simply shut down and returned me to a desktop with no mention that it had shut down or crashed

weird sounding, and difficult to recreate but you never know....
