Title: Spanish Civil War
Post by: patriotpac_3 on 20 Apr 2005, 22:04:53
I would like to see a mod and campaign based on the Spanish Civil War, which occurred between the communists and the Fascists in the 1930's.  If anyone has seen the movie "Land and Freedom", you know exactly how these battles would be perfect for OFP.

You are an American communist who travels to Spain to join the fight.  You lead a squad of men armed with long rifles and machine guns with tripods to capture several villages.  There is a lot of urban fighting.  Your only vehicles would be donkey carts, motorcycles, and maybe a beat up old truck.  The enemy would drive around in black cars.

The Germans bombed Spain during the war to test out their bombers before World War II.  This campaign would require a lot of pyrotechnics and a map that resembles 1930's Spain with several flattened towns.

sounds neat. a campaign that would use WWII style stuff (mainly) without being about WWII. I like the idea. do u have any further developments in the storyline?

you could have a part of it that you have to protect civilians,Scholars writers because the first thing the facists did was assasinate people who they thought were enemy to there facist establishment ie.the assasination of Fredricho Lorca..so you could have a mission where you are extracting a loyal communist playwrite who has been marked for assasination with a small contingent of communists and you encounter a large force of facist troops and you engage them and go cross country on foot with fascist reinforcements following you and you have to go across some mountains littered with fascist troops all the time with them in pursuit and with airstrikes around your position without having your loyal communist playwrite killed finally making it to a safehouse

That's just the idea.  I believe Federico Garcia Lorca was murdered in 1936.  There was actually a pretty interesting article in the New Yorker about his death about a year ago.  So you'd have to rescue a controversial writer marked for assasination... Are you a history major?

Picasso's Guernica is based on the firebombing of that town by the Luftwaffe in 1937.  I believe Heinkel He-111 bombers were used during that incident.  I've had the chance to get up close to one of these aircraft, and it's one of my favorite of WWII, but I don't think one exists yet for OFP.

No Iam not a History major I just read alot and am very interested in military and conflict history and am also a very loyal Flashpoint Mission editer like you all that come to this site and also like what Frediricho Lorca wrote he was very talented..I think it would be an awesome mission an american communist enlisting to fight for the red flags would be really cool as you said..I have never been able to get close to a german plane before but I think it would be cool they were good engineers... have seen first hand very many american aircraft from the Vietnam war at the Ho Chi Minh city war museum I am living in Vietnam at the moment and theyre are alot of planes, tanks and weapons which I have been able to get close to and take good pictures of and mostly they are in perfect working condition

You'll have to explain that some more to me (patriotpac_3@yahoo.com) but I appreciate your insight and interest in my idea.  I am looking for some good addons to use as Spanish communists since there are no actual Spanish Civil War addons that exist right now.

You should definitely put your knowledge of Vietnam to good use in creating some missions or a campaign.

Comintern was the unified communist organisation at the time and they trained revolutionarys at their revolutionary schools fo various uprisings kinda like those terrorists schools they have nowdays but they trained them in guerilla warfare, tactics, philosophy Che Guevara was trying to build a school like that of his own in Bolivia when the CIA decided to take him down..Whampoa was a school in China around and before the time that you are speaking of which trained revolutionarys in the Chinese Communism way there where also schools in Moscow at the time pretty much they trained leaders to be able to successfully create revolutions

I've started the first mission.  You play as Dr. Santos, a leftist writer and schoolteacher.  You must escape from the fascists who show up at your country hideout to bust a cap...

The first mission is done minus the intro and a good, clean briefing.  My goal is to have it completed this weekend.

I am looking for some details of battles that the POUM fought from 1936-37.  So far the film 'Land and Freedom' has been my only reference.  I am trying to put together a campaign that is somewhat historically accurate and I need to know more about the battles the POUM took part in.

i know that this post has nothing to do with the missions but i know some one fought for the communists in the spanish civil war

he only told me about one thing he did though:

they had to fight their way up a hill and capture a  town but the facists counterattacked and they  had to hold onto the town for a day until their help came

If you want to be real and dramatic, you may follow the next general steps:

- Play with two characters. First was forced to join the nationals as they took his town. Second, living in a near town was forced to join the reds.
- Play some missions with first character, other ones with the other.
- Near the end of your campaign, eventually, both got involved in a battle (choose which character to use here as player).  In this mission the other character was captured by the player's team. The player recognized the other as his real brother minutes before he was executed.

You may want to reference george orwell's book "homage to catalonia", its an excellent read about orwell's real experiences in poum during the early part of the war, really puts some insight into how the trench soldier felt during that confusing and chaotic time and how the socialists betrayed the anarchists.
