Title: Civil War Campaign
Post by: Tomasz on 17 Jun 2004, 20:13:30
Situation: Republic of Nogova situated on an archipelago on the Black  Sea is facing a national crisis. It's formed of five islands that are lined up in one axis with Nogova in the middle. The eastern islands(Kulgujev ... and Nogova) want to separate and form a Socialistic Government.  The republic doesnt have the power to fight this threat, and seperation is inevitable. The Republic, however, wants to keep Nogova, because of its natural resources, reserarch facility, and because it is the capital and  most developped island.

RN (Republic of Nogova) orders the other two islands (Everon and Malden ) to draft all the men between ages of 18 and 40. Nogova is facing a civil war with communistic extrimists (sponsored with arms by USSR )and conscripts (sponsored by USA)

You play a role of one of the concripts from Everon. First mission would be your arrival in the boats with others from your unit in one of the western ports of the island. You will disembark under altilery fire and repel the first attack. The RA (Republican Army) will find itself controlling only the airport and the northern port.

Patrols
Assaults on fortified positions :gunman:
etc...

The first objective will be to take the western half of the island, due to the friendliness of the population, which in contrary is hostile in the east.

In the middle of the campaign, a cease fire will be announced, and border defenses raised on the bridge sides and in the north (similar to those between the soviet uninon and NATO)

After couple of days the RA will make a huge assault on the bridge (with you on the first wave) and then secure the hills east to the bridge.

Patrols
Assaults  :gunman:
Defending Convoys
etc...(take into account the hostility of the citizens. You can imitate todays Baghdad)

and finaly the battle for Lipany

So what do you think?

I think it's a great idea if you can make it so that none of the sides are the "good guys", or even better, letting the player decide for him self which he thinks are the "good guys". So first you can play as a RA guy which you have covered quite good, then you change to the socialists due to being captured or something. When you've played these 2 built in mini-campaigns of 5, 6 missions each you can choose who you are going to fight for in the last couple of missions and decide the fate of the islands. :)

Also one note, socialism and communism are two different things. You have to pick one and not say in one mission that you're fighting socialists and in the other you are fighting communists.

Hmm when I read this, I thought ohhh cool some battle of gettysburg anyone? But I do like this idea. The islands embroiled in a civil war makes it that much more exciting. How are we going to go about this though? Does each island have custom troops and such? Like one buys abrams from NATO and one buys t80s from the USSR? :P

Maybe have some missions where you disrupt the enemy supply flow by blwoing up some docked lsts or some other ship....
Some cool harbor stuff, or maybe when their C130 is landing with the goods, launch an AA missile and make it go down in flames then run like hell to get away.

This idea has many possibilities. :)

Title: Re:Civil War Campaign
Post by: Tomasz on 18 Jun 2004, 18:35:22
hey

Thanks for ideas mates, but the truth is that  I am just bad at making missions, so if anyone of you would like to start this project and maybe hopefully end it,  I would be overjoyed. ;D

But please include me in the briefings.

Comming back to the campaign, I'd expect the two sides without heavy armor( Maybe BMP and M113 but that is all), because
1. I dont see any big harbor to disembark them.
2. There is no point for sending such a war mashine in such a small area

OK OK, there can be up to 3T72s and 3T55s in the campaign

Cause the commanders always break rules right :afro:

I also like the idea of choosing on which side you play, but looking on the world of a soldier, he doesnt have much to decide on

ex: You have orders to pacificate a village. Oders are orders and desertion = death, so in one aspect you can play as the bad guys.

You can do it this way:

First you are fed up with propaganda on one side and you're on a patrol. Your squad get massacared except you who surrender. You are taken to the enemy base where you are fed with their propaganda and you join them. When you're on a mission you meet your own buddies and it would be like a "trustee duell" like in the movie "The Rock" where the terrorists starts pointing their gun at each others. You decide whom to win by shooting the side you don't want to and the side you preferd you join. Or something like that.

Yeh good idea, im thinking of making sumthing like that but not about communists etc. I was thinking of making a civil war based on different factions/ militia's that have been left after a long war and are fighting for power of the island.

Thinking bout what missions i cud make.

Hey,

Great news Gooner. I hope you want to locate this on Nogova. Its the only big island suitable for this kind of stuff that I know :-\. Well you can count on me with the ideas, but it would be better if we could contact through MSN. You can find my address on my profile.

I hope something will be ( hopefully good ) out of this

cheers

The critical aspect to this is making the player believe that the islands are in close proximity to each other:   I would recommend a fake map showing how they relate to each other.   Use that trick in the CWC campaign where you take off from one and land on another to encourage the feeling that they are close.

A civil war on one island is just a war between two sides:  lots of cutscenes and some non-shooting misssions would be required to make it feel like a civil war.

I'm already making something like that (and have been for the past few months) so If you try my campaign and recognise the idea, don't try to claim it. It's purely my idea.

If I did get the idea from you I would put you in the credits but, in this case, the idea came from the development of my first mission (which still hasn't seen the light of day, not even beta light).

This post isn't meant offensively or anything. I just want to clear it up in case anything starts over it in the near future.

Fair point Cool Z.

Ive now gone off the idea for the time being and im making sumthing else. I'll wait till your campaign comes and i'll see wot its like plus maybe nick a few ideas. Only joking  ;D .

Hope ur campaigns good, how many missions are there?

Cheers

Your not gonna see my campaign anytime soon so don't postpone yours just because of that. Mine won't be out for at least a year yet, likely more.

My first mission is coming along quite well and should be available for Beta-testing after about 2 weeks to a month (just a guess right now, not definite). Basically a fairly easy introduction to the campaign. Required addons are lots of BAS stuff and Skye island. That's all I'm saying before I go too far off-topic.
Title: Re:Civil War Campaign
Post by: Drozdov on 12 Jul 2004, 01:03:14
An excellent idea, but you'll find it tough to actually make a campaign as good as the idea. As macguba says, you need a lot of cutscenes, very good cutscenes, to keep it all together. That takes a lot of time. I think this sort of campaign really needs a full team working on it.

Hi,

Im trying to organize a team, but as a polish person would say, it goes like blood from the nose. I've put up an entry to the recruitement depot yesterday. It's still waiting for approval. If anyone of u guys is interested in joining the team, and u know that u will have time to do this, please check the rec. depot. Or if it wont get approoved u can find me on msn under the address in my profile.

cheers

Tomasz

P.S. To all admins that are sharpening their teeth on me right now: I do not recruit on this forum.

Hey mates,

well the wheel of life starts to turn cuz i have two first ppl in the team.

Mission Maker MuntaHunta and Cutscene Maker Gooner. We are not starting yet, for I'm waiting for a bigger potential in the beginning.

To CoolZ: I do not copy ur idea or anything. Its a new independent project and I will never relate it to urs. Cheers mate.

I will keep the thread updated with the progress.

Thanks for support ( if any  :gunman::hmm: ) ;)

Post by: Texas on 03 Sep 2004, 16:04:17
Your idea is nice, and its not stereotypical like many others. Agreed that it can be painfull to make it into a campaign but with some good will it can be made  ;)

Obviously both sides dont have "Super-Commandos" (they are conscripts after all), neither sophisticated equipment (i.e. choppers, tanks) since the small and crappy nogovo republic cant afford em. But as missions progress e.x. russia and the other side can send in some instructors to train infantry, send in ammo and things like that (but not sophisticated things again)

I can help with anything exept scripting ( i dont know shit and i dont wanna learn :P )

Title: Re:Civil War Campaign
Post by: Matt Walter on 04 Sep 2004, 02:17:17
Hey, the idea sounds good. I just fell in love with the switch side idea.

First Idea: I agree, tanks and choppers are a bad ideas... at lest at the beginning. I think as the game progresses, the 2 major nations will supply them slowly because they have other priorities.

Related Idea: I think the "other" nations should be in a neutral state, but if you do something really good, like activate the best ending for a mission, a nation might give you some weapons... ex: If there is a mission you protect a convoy and not one unit is destroyed, Japan will give you some weapons. It wouldn't always be Japan.

Second Idea: Making you change teams is not the easiest idea to tackle. You could make a mission that you are sent on a special mission and you get in a trap and are surrounded. They give there point of view and you have a choice to choose your side. If you join them, they don't kill you, if you say no, some Bradleys conveniently come and save the day.

Third Idea: If the second idea is too hard to do, we could make the campaign from 2 prospectives on opposite sides. First maybe the USSR supported side looks like the bad guys, but later on the player can interpret any side being the "good guys" because the U.S. backed side could be really corrupt.

Forth Idea: Each "main" nation sends in some special forces... playable?... up to you. Use addon special forces for each side, I can give you some addon recommendations if you like the idea of special forces.

Summing it all up: I guess that was it... I think I am forgetting something, but if I remember it, I will tell you.  8)

Hi there everyone.

I'll be working on the 3rd mission, which, already is almost ready to go. Of corse, its just a plain idea, but is blooming hard to do. (playing the mission, difficulty like 8.5/10).

PM me or E-mail me and we can swap the missions.

Cheers

(p.s. some of the mission designs we might need to change, like the idea of over 150 men on each side, would lagg like crazy!)

Hi there Dagon,

If ur willing to put the time and effort into this campaign ur welcome to join us. The more people the better. Just add Tomasz or me to MSN or if u dnt have MSN just PM one of us and we'll let the other know.

If u dnt have MSN, u shud try and get it as it wud be very handy to be able to chat to mission makers or woteva on ideas etc.

Cheers

LooseKannon, the point is just to make the player feel that those 150men are there. He doesnt have to see them, just hear reports and ( if any , dont remember :P) fire exchanges.

Anyway nice to hear about the progress.

Tomasz

P.S. You really think its a plain idea? :noo: :wow:

errrmmm i didnt say that the mission was a plain idea, i said that the one i sent you was the plain draft :P lol. Just a 'scetch' or somthing.

If you want, i'll make constant radio messages going in between each group/the ones you dont see.

p.s. did you try it out?
Title: Re:Civil War Campaign
Post by: Dagon on 23 Sep 2004, 14:13:53
btw, are you planning on using the buy weapons script?

A modified version of the one in the editors depot with a nicer aesthetic appeal would be nice - it'd  be a nice alternative to having to scavenge everything or get given everything at the start of the mission, and it'd promote a bit of variation - players could choose how to handle each level and have to ration their money accordingly, etc.
Title: Re:Civil War Campaign
Post by: Tomasz on 23 Sep 2004, 15:53:45
yes I tried it out,

I have a lot of feedback for you. I'll send you an e-mail with it or I'll just meet you on saturday on MSN.

I can mention only one thing here:

Where the hell did those Americans come from? The war is stricktly inside the republic. Yes, US supplies with arms, but they would never send a single soldier. :hmm:

Dagon - arms are supplied by the republic which is supplied by western nations. A soldier doesnt have to buy the arms, they are given to him. Of course in the beginning you will be oftern short of ammo, for the situation wont be stable. :)

I'm half finished on the map you described to me, tomasz, but I could do with some help on a decision. I'm wondering if it's feasible that you could have two possible outcomes to the mission?
Title: Re:Civil War Campaign
Post by: SilentHunter_764 on 24 Sep 2004, 08:03:57
lol sorry about the US helicopter, thomasz..

i put it in because I thought that the fight may have been picked up by spy-plane or satelite, and the americans sent in a delta squad to check it out.

BTW that mission i sent you is NOT a final. its in BETA form.
Title: Re:Civil War Campaign
Post by: Tomasz on 24 Sep 2004, 18:58:11
Dagon,

ofcourse, I actually thought of that. If the player would (impossible :D) come back with the docs to RA, the campaign would go normally, but if he would get captured, there would be an additional mission on the SE side.

If you have any other ideas I'm open minded :)

You know I'm interested in doin something on this, but I've got a thing to add.

From what I've seen, it looks like you have separate ppl doin separate missions right? Well even if you supply the idea, missions can vary a lot from maker to maker.

Now this can be good or bad for a campaign.

Good-----> missions are not the same and vary, making it not boring(unless your ideas are... ::) :D)
that makes it better

Bad-------->missions vary tooo much yet stay on the same ideas you gave out. This is bad since players can not connect with each mission and nothing feels consecutive...

-------------------------------------------------------------
So you get my gist? At the end make sure everything is cohesive and works together while not being too boring or the same.

My two cents...

GRK :)

I played part of the first mission/volume.

I like the boat ride plus arty, seems like the first level of Medal of Honor. ;)

Easily killed Republic or rebel forces? Can't remember who...

Then waited for quite awhile for next step. Waited on 4x for 5 mintues. Saved and then quit...

Why does it take so long? I unpboed it and it seemed that sometimes dudes would get stuck in buidlings due to starting place. Then 10 OFP minutes later they do a human wave assualt all by themselves. ;D

Looked good for still being worked on and easy enough for a first mission.

I'd suggest the occupying troops be in and around, at the gas station, buidlings, pulling sentry/guard duty, some ready, some not plus trucks so that we know how they got there. But looks good so far. ;)

Take a look. Made the units into standard BIS units. But the mission requres v1.96 (made with v1.96). Contact me if you can't get it to work.

anyways, make sure you look out for that ambusher! he'll easily kill all your teammates! (if you notice i'm not being spisific from where he comes from, but i can tell you its from a house :-X)

PS: the best i can do is E-mail you, and i bet AOL chating isn't compatable with MSN (monopoly reasons ???)

Post by: sim on 05 Mar 2005, 14:38:50
Yes I have infact played it but just never got round to posting any feedback sorry.  :-\

Intro: Intro was ok but the camera was a bit jolty when moving, maybe have the camera jump to position sometimes rather than always moving.

Briefing: Was good, gave you all the info you needed.

Mission: Started off, bloody hell seemed like I was going on a 20 mile tab to reach the hill, eventually sped up time till I reached it. Decided to do a rambo on top of the hill and boy was I a lucky bastard! Was shot at and hit several times but non of the shots killed me or took my legs out, managed to take out a lot of the soldiers myself but then ran away from fear of dying and let the others finish them off  :P

Recieved the radio message telling me to get down the hill and move to the airport... ok.... omg your having a laugh?!? I don't have to go all the way back to the base do I?  :-X

Thankfully not  ;D
Cutscene kicked off and I had moved into a truck en-route to the airport.
Then when we were ambushed all hell broke loose, I couldn't see anything from the bloody grenades, my m8s were blowing up, left right and centre. I managed to get away from it all and hid by the fuel station, picking off men one by one... then someone picked me off and my flukey run was over  :'(

 :P

Great mission and a great start to a campaign.  ;)
Didn't find many bugs but maybe take a few of those smoke grenades out cos I really couldn't see shit!
Apart from that it was excellent and I really enjoyed it, I think I'll go play it again soon.  :)
