Dear Granny,

You'll never guess what's happening!   I switched on the computer this morning and went to OFPEC and they are having a competition for Christmas! (http://www.ofpec.com/intel/index.php?a=show&newsID=1262)   With prizes and everything although they haven't said what the prizes are but I bet they'll be really good because Sui and macguba and Artak and all that lot wouldn't offer complete rubbish I mean as long as they could get something decent but they don't have any money so I don't know what it could be.   They haven't said what kind of competition its going to be but I bet it'll be really good.   I'm definitely going to enter.

Mummy and Daddy send their love and Jim says please can he not have gloves for Christmas this year?    I don't care what I get as long as Uncle Kegetys makes it snow and Daddy lets me keep that burnt out Shilka in the garden.  

Yesterday I had baked beans for tea and scored a try at rugby.  It was only a practice match though.

There will be more news soon.    We're just sorting out the details and the submission interface.      Competition closing date will be between Christmas and New Year so you will have to act fast.    Also deciding if messiah will be allowed to enter in view of his name.    ;D   The answer is yes of course ... very sound chap, messiah.   Wrote some handy tutes like the camera.sqs tutorial. You should make a video file of the cutscene / intro / outro what ever you want to call it and then submit it to us via a special submission interface. Pbo's are also accepted, but not recommended. More info on the submission interface will be posted tomorrow.

OFPEC Christmas Cutscene Competition 2005
or in short OFPEC's CCC-05

In association with BIS, OFPEC is arranging a Christmas-spirited cutscene competition. The purpose of this competition is to produce short, quality and most of all funny cutscenes, which we all can then watch over and over again with joy and Christmas spirit in our hearts.  :)   

If you are Hindu, Buddist, Muslim, Hebrew, Agnostic, Atheist, etc., don't worry, we want you to join in.   Christmas is about all kinds of things - love, joy, peace to all men, snow, sleighbells, presents you don't want, Christmas specials on the TV, eating too much, falling out with your relatives .... This competition is so that the whole community can have a bit of fun.


The rulesSchedule
Competition starts NOW! (go go go)

Submission closes on 12:00 GMT, 2nd January 2006.

Competition ends in early January 2006 (if all goes well even sooner) and the winner and runner ups are announced at OFPEC.


Submission
Submission will be done by using a special interface. Bear with it if you're uploading a large file.
You need to have a OFPEC forum account for the submission to work.
It's strongly advised that you use the FTP upload method!

Judging and scoring
Judging will be done by a selected team of judges among the OFPEC staff. The cutscene earning most points wins. Judges are not allowed to enter the competition.   The judges' ruling is final - you can complain about it, but it won't do you any good.


The prize
A copy of Operation Flashpoint: Elite (for Xbox) signed by BIS crew themselves, nothing more nothing less. Only the winner gets a real prize, others get fame and glory.   In a joint submission the one to receive the prize will be the one mentioned first in the included readme.

You're allowed to edit the video, yes. As long as the cutscene itself is done in OFP, we don't mind about editing the video like adding fades, credits, voice dub ect.

I'm trying to avoid the OFP camera as much as possible becuase, quite frankly, it sucks. ;D

Prior to the release of Arma, it would be a cracking prize if you ran another mission competition, and have a prize as a signed first edition Arma dvd with a very low if not 00001 serial number

I just bought one for seventy something quid online in the UK..... mind you it hasn't arrived yet....  :o    

Some shops are no longer stocking it because the Xbox360 has arrived.    I don't know whether OFP:E works on the 360:  we do know that BIS did not get a chance to test it on the 360.

I thought it would drop a lot more too.   But a lot of the places that are still selling it have it at £99.  Don't forget there is a vast corpus of existing games.

Last I heard there were no plans for an OFP version for the 360 (although Elite might work in 360, I have no idea) and I would be very surprised if BIS bothered.

hello,

good news to hear about the competition. A quick query: how much are we allowed to make effects (like text and pictures) appear in the movie (in avi, mpg or wmv format) not using flashpoint? does every bit of text have to come from flashpoint and then be recorded?

Greenscreening is ok too. You can have yourself chased by a T80 for all I care, as long as the T80 is from flashpoint's T80. Catch my drift? You can do what ever you like with the video, as long as the base is done with OFP.
Wether the judges will care more about a traditional cutscene or a video editing masterpiece, I cannot say, it's about their opinion.

Links are not mandatory (though preferred so that if a viewer loves something he sees, he can download it with ease) when submitting in video format. What still remains is a list of the used addons and their author/mod team.

Ahh ive ran into a problem ive created it and edited it but its just ove 20Mb and i cant get onto my Sisters comp where she has Windows XP with Windows Movie Maker their for i cant add text and other effects on the video and i cant get it down to the correct file size

Any ideas ?

And ive got a bet going with a mate he says if i win he will sell his X-Box for 20£ so fingers crossed  ;D

have you tried compression in lots of different ways? remember that winrar files usually get better compression than zipped files.

Well i have windows 2000 im sure i dont have it i have tried installing it it says it wont work because it aint XP

ill try winrar aswell see if that compress the file anymore ill try and find a way if i can get on my sisters computer but its looking rather grim so far

I didn't participate, but I'm quite curious to see the results

and the Christmas theme itself will look quite curious in a few weeks time, so why not have them online for the end of the Holidays

There are so few submissions that we'll be able to judge them in a reasonable amount of time. Most of the work has actually been done already.
Once judged, we'll know which ones are worthy to host and host them we shall. It'll be a top 5 sort of thing or something similar.  :)

OFPEC Christmas Cutscene Competition 2005
Winner and top 5


Ladies and lady likers, the judging phase is now complete with a clear winner and 5 quality runner ups, ready to be adored by the public eye.

The judging went fairly easy because none of the submissions needed a big bunch of addons and many were in video format. The team of judges consisted of macguba, Tyger, The Architect, Pablo, Jimboob and myself. Many thanks to you guys on putting in the extra effort when needed.
The method of judging was simple. Each judge downloaded every submission and gave it a rating from 5 to 1, but so, that they could only give one submission the max 5 points, the next best 4 ect. until finally give the last 1 point. This system makes the best (what we thought was the best) stand out from the worst, but does not necessarily distinguish the quality difference between the cutscenes. If cutscene #1 has 30 points and cutscene #2 has only #5, it doesn't mean that cutscene #2 is SO much better, it just means that it's better.  :)

All in all, the competition was a big success, not quite in the amount of submissions, but more so in the quality of the cutscenes. Thanks to all who participated in any way and congratulations to the winner from the whole OFPEC staff. I hope you enjoyed making these as much as we enjoy viewing them. We had some good laughs while judging and although Christmas is long gone now, I'm sure you can all find it again with this top 6 selection.


The prize, a signed copy of OFP: Elite will be in the mail and on your way shortly Hotshot. Congratulations once again.  :)

Heh, thanks guys ;D I really appretiate the comments on it. I saw Pierres movie shortly after submitting mine and didn't think i would have a chance, and Shadows of the Motherland is certainly orginal and funny to watch, so there's great movies to watch, gone Christmas or not.

this might be a product of unzipping the files from their archive form. if you've been extracting them and then watching them try opening them from inside the archive. if you've been watching them from inside the archive, try extracting them and watching them separately. illogical i know but thats windows for you. also check your version of windows media player (if you don't have it try updating whatever product you do have - and if that fails get Windows Mediaplayer) is up to date.

Help me now! I have downloaded "I need you", and most programs can play it... But the colours are messed up! The movie is supposed to be in normal, OFP colours, no? Well, when I play it, it looks like a washed up rainbow in which I can only faintly make out the shapes of the characters! Please help!

First of all, I would like to give warm  thank you to everyone who entered the competition.   I thought the top five entries were all good, and some were excellent.   ;D

Congratulations to Hotshot who's entry was a worthy winner.  C0LDSt33L's entry had me in stitches and the cinematics in Pierre's entry were second to none, but I enjoyed them all.  I hope that a Christmas Compo will be a a regular event from now on...  ::)

Now to those having problems viewing the entries...  :(

I am lucky in that I have a very fast cable Internet connection, so downloading stuff is normally fast and easy.  Understandably, the download bandwidth is "throttled" from OFPEC, but I downloaded all of the zip files, two at a time.  I found that I had a problem with one of them, which somehow managed to corrupt during the download.  

I normally unzip stuff with WinRAR using the "Extract Here" right-click option (as it will handle zip, tar.gz and tar.Z files, amongst others, as well as rar) and it told me there was a problem with the archive.  I checked it with WinZip too, with the same result, so I deleted it and downloaded it again and at the second attempt WinRAR unpacked it with no problem.

For those of you who have been unable to view one or more of the entries, I suggest that you do the same, preferably at an "off peak" time if you have a slow connection.

One other point.  While most entries are in Windows Media Format (wmv), Cheetah's entry is in MPEG, so you may need to install some DVD software on you machine to install the correct codecs, etc. to play it.

Hope this might help someone...  8)

(there is unlikely to be anything inherently wrong with the zip files themselves).

Might be worth mentioning that VLC Media player is a very useful (and free) video player which seldom worries about a video file being broken or having codec issues, not only that but it is also an essentially region free DVD player to boot :)
