Title: semi-transparency-bug?
Post by: remcen on 18 Nov 2005, 20:57:08
hi all,

this is maybe addon-related, maybe just a bug i don't know yet.
i have this neat appartment house:
(http://img252.imageshack.us/img252/9760/house22pu.th.jpg) (http://img252.imageshack.us/my.php?image=house22pu.jpg)
with this view geo lod: (~100 rectangular, named elements/selections), as you see there's a long gap in the wall where the glass bricks in the resolution lods would be.
(http://img508.imageshack.us/img508/6867/houseviewgeo2gs.th.jpg) (http://img508.imageshack.us/my.php?image=houseviewgeo2gs.jpg)

inside the house, in the staircase,  there's a barrel and a soldier, both standard BIS models:
(http://img109.imageshack.us/img109/1083/house19vg.th.jpg) (http://img109.imageshack.us/my.php?image=house19vg.jpg)

ok, but when i zoom in from outside the house, looking through the semi-transparent texture of these glass bricks, the soldier doesn't show up any more, only the barrel still does:
(http://img252.imageshack.us/img252/7981/house30mz.th.jpg) (http://img252.imageshack.us/my.php?image=house30mz.jpg)

now is that an ofp bug, or addon-related? i guess it's addon-related cos i can see myself through the semi-transparent edge of the RES factory window for example:
(http://img504.imageshack.us/img504/9701/factorywindow5bw.th.jpg) (http://img504.imageshack.us/my.php?image=factorywindow5bw.jpg)

to be honest i have run out of ideas.

Have you got a View Geometry LOD?

sure, see second pic. it's modelled from scratch, i didn't just copied&pasted the geo lod ;)

I should read posts more carefully.   ::)

Only other thing I can think of is the order that textures are in on your windows.

ah sorry from me this time, i should have already written in my first post that i selected all glass brick faces and moved them to the top, so i can eleminate the face order as reason. and after all if it was the face order the barrel should disappear, too, which curiously is not the case and the thing i absolutely do not understand  :-\

Isn't this like one of the oldest bugs in OFP...?
It has come and gone over the years with different patches...

Well, if it doesn't happen with the BIS buildings, there must be a reason why it happens with this one.

If it was an ancient bug, it would work equally with any building, presumably.

Is the p3d binarized or is it still MLOD?

it's ODOL

Well, if you want to throw it at me, I'll have a look, but I can't promise anything.   ;)

Wow, remcen really has thought of everything :P

Not sure if this will make a difference or not, but do you have:
canocclude=0
in your named properties?

I have heard that forces OFP to draw objects behind the one in question, maybe that will fix your problem?

nope, makes no difference unfortunately.
@planck: email's  underway ;)

OK, I have it.........will look at it tomorrow.
Ummm........later today.   ;D

It does happen with BIS buildings...
Why would I call it a BIS bug if it didn't.. ::)

Well, I didn't find much wrong at all, it seems like it should work.

As for the BIS factory building from Resistance that has the same type of windows (Tovarna1.p3d), they only have the transparent textures on the inside faces of the windows, the outside faces don't appear to be transparent at all.

This must be how they dealt with the problem.   ;D

I'll keep digging though, but I'm not overly confident.

ok, i eliminated another possible source: the texture itself. initially i thought that it might have something to do with the "no alpha filtering" option of paatool, but i tried filtered, non-filtered as well as binarized and unbinarized .paa files... same result for all.
@hater_kint: look at my last pic in my very first post: the faces of the window pointing outside are not transparent, but the inner edges. in fact you can see parts of the arm, etc. through the edge of the window. that's what i don't understand. maybe i should even try texcview-converted textures... hmmm yeah, will try that later today.

Definitely an old bug. I remember first noticing it in CWC when I was hiding in a building from a Hind, and attempting to shoot it down with a LAW. I knew where it was hovering, but I sure as hell couldn't see it! :p A more telling example with a BIS car:

Looks painful. ;D
