Title: to hintC or not to hintC...
Post by: bedges on 16 Dec 2004, 01:41:37
i have an issue with my mission,
it's as slow as goin fishin,
and i want to tell the player at the start.

so to put this to the test,
i thought hintC would be the best
as at center screen it is a hint apart.

but now my woes are doubled
and my hinting thoughts are troubled
because the thing ends up repeating at top left.

so now it says it twice,
and i end up saying scheise.
so i'll ask you lot, because you're all so deft.

sorry. it's late. i've had beer. you know the score.

even more perplexing is the fact that i can't seem to get hintC to work from the init file. that in itself is no biggie, i can call a script with the hintC inside from the init, but the hint repeating top left is really annoying. i don't remember seeing that happen in any of the missions that have used hintC, so what am i doing wrong?

answers in iambic pentameter please... :P

I'm not up for much riddling
As I'm now a fiddlin

But the answer you seek
is in the reg text below but don't look if thou are weak

And I'd like to give a snap & a kick via a fiddlin
to the person that continues this riddlin :P ::)

Thy answer thou seek is one that I can only guess. I don't really know what the problem is. I always put hints into triggers activation fields, just seems better and less messy when changing the actual units.

The code I use is:

hintC "Kill the man that riddles!"

to get it in the center and it pauses the game.

OR

hint "I am not lying to you, press detonate and your problems will be solved"

to make it in the upper left corner.

That's all I can suggest for now unless its in a repeating trigger or something which is why it is flashing... :P

yep, that's a given. the game pauses and the hint box appears centre screen waiting for the player to click continue.

but once that's clicked, the same hint text then appears with a ping in the usual place for hints top left. what i want is just a singular hint in the middle of the screen that goes away (and stays away) after clicking continue.

should maybe have said that to begin with instead of fiddlin huh ;)

and having gone into flashpoint just now and looked at the training mission from cold war crisis i see that's the way hintC works apparently. always migrates from centre to top left.

fie i say, fie and fiddlesticks to hintC and all its relatives.

my @$$ will feel GRK's foot

 ;D :P :-X ;D :P :-X ;D :P :-X
lol

yeah, just wanted to do that

EDIT: once again this proves you shouldn't take too long to respond.
why'd you have to end the rhyming?

not sure i quite like the ryhme,
as it seems quite out of time,
to place your rhyme here.

then a couplet for the new verse,
so you forget the last rhyme with a curse,
then to use it again now is queer...

MAYBE ITS BECAUSE YOU HAD BEER

no ideas on the thread but i like the poetry

Forget that then, I forgot hintC goes to the upper left after clickage. :P

You could do your own dialog box that really doesn't do anything, just have an ok button so after the info, it dissappears. There's a dialog maker or something like it in the ed depot.

Methinks this thread has run its rout
and can no longer stand stout
Unless the author has Q's

and dialogs are the irk
that can really make you say "you jerk!"
and your variation on curses is few
