Title: Voice Engine
Post by: Blanco on 06 Jul 2004, 20:21:50
I have been experimenting with this and I wanna make it as easy as possible.

Making units shout and scream custom voices randomly is very easy to do, but the difficulty is WHEN, in what situation do they say something?

Some ideas :

When a unit throws a grenade, you can make him shout "grenaaaadde!!!" or " fire in the hole!!", just add a EH "fired", check if it's a grenade or not, then make him shout (maybe with a possibility of 50%)
An EH "hit" can be used for the "aaargh" & "I'm hit" sounds...

Other ideas?
btw : Does OFP create serious lag when you add one or more) EH for non-playable unit on the map?

There's a number of scripts doing this, however, some scripts have features that others have not. Those scripts have features the first one hasn't, etc. It would be a good idea to assemble all these scripts in to a ultimate script.

I remember awhile back in the demo? I was playin it and one of my squaddies got one in the leg and he shouted something. I've heard this a few more times in 1.20 or 1.30? and after I got res it stopped.

But that would definately add to the realism.

One thing though, the thrower of the grenade wouldn't go GRENADE!!, he'd chuck it and if it was fused or something an enemy goes GRENADE!! and boom he's dead. ::) ;D

Yeah that's right, maybe it's possible to detect an enemy in neighbourhood of the thrower (or the grenade itself) with nearestobject command.
The thrower shouts "fire in the hole" and the... "receiver"  ;D shouts "grenade!"

My final goal is to create something like you see in Farcry where you hear the squads giving instructions to each other,

Other warcries in mind?  :P

I believe ECP does just this, so it wouldn't be too bad.

Just, maybe the sounds could be a little more adult, not just screams but cursing and yelling...

No, I don't like the voices of farcry, they remind me too much I'm playing a game...
I think the voices have to sound hectic, almost un-understandable...

I gonna watch the opening scene of Saving private ryan again...
