yes, since they load your memory. Use mod folders to avoid this as much as you can.

IMO addons as such do not cause lag. As default addons are loaded into memory, but as I see it, lag has nothing to do with too many addons.

In case off too many addons and the switch -nomap is not in use (or version 1.94), OFP will tell you something about it being unable to midmap blah blah or something. But that's just you running out of memory.

I've got 4 mod folders and in them are 800 megs of addons. I can load them all up to memory or I can use just one folder with about <100 megs of addons and I see no difference in the gameplay.

I have at least 2 gigs of addons and they don't cause any noticeable lag. I'm using mod folders and nomap.

On my last comp I didn't have modfolders and I didn't think it would cause much lag but when I had to reinstall OFP the lag dissappeared. Of course I wanted addons so I started reinstalling all addons I wanted and it started to lag again, and got worse the more addons I put in.
With my new comp and OFP that I use modfolders for I relized that it was my copy of SEB Nam Pack 2 which totally screwed up the rest of the game and made it lag. So now I got no Nam. :P

Greetings.

For the record, I have a similar experiance to Armstrong here - the more (and more complex/large) addons I have installed, the slower OFP runs.

It might help to know what sort of PCs we're talking about here (eg, a p4 3.2 w/ geforce fx 5900 is obviously going to run OFP better anyway).

Or maybe I'm having some strange hallucinations from spending too much time in front of a PC monitor playing OFP or on the OFPEC.

Aaaaaagh! what's that strange purple monster? Nooooo!

1. Have you tried the BIS forum to get the "official view" on this? the OFPEC is really an editing forum, so it's unlikely you'll get a definate answer here.

2. If you already know that you have 800m of addons and no lag...why ask? I had to think for 2 whole seconds before coming up with my answer and that hurts.  ;D

EDIT: Curses, Armstrong beat me to it.

hey netta,
no offence to you man, but this is a advanced scripting/editing forum and some/most of your questions are quite simple, maybe you should post on the normal editing/scripting forum.

From what i understand Lag is simply the delay between client and server receiving transmissions from each other
It is effected by poor connection and poor bandwidth

Client 1 shoots client 2
bullet data transferred via client server client
client 2 receives data
client 2 dies
client 2 sends date to client 1 via server about his death
client 1 sees client 2 die

The bigger the delay in this transfer of data, the longer it appears to take the Dying client to actually die when viewing from the shooter client

Having low bandwidth may cause a traffic jam of these data packets to be sent, this inturn can cause lost packets and therefore desync

I think thats it. If anyone is more knowleadgeable on this, then please clarify and correct me

Memory usage due to -nomap not being used and large amounts of addon files would most likely cause framerate reduction which isnt the same thing

For the record, the filesize for all my addons when loaded, using mod folders and the -nomap switch is way in excess of my RAM, but does not effect my game

However when i come out of the game and try to load say a web browser, i then find a reduction in speed, but certainly none in game

Greetings, Terox.

Statement: Yes, for all intents and purposes, you are correct about lag. However, I think we're talking about frame-rate drops in SP due to addon use, not lag in MP. They are essentially two different things. At least that's what I was talking about...

Clarification: What does the -nomap switch do? I remember reading about it in the editing depot a long time ago, but the author said he didn't notice any difference in gameplay. I assume it has something to do with the memory map system used in OFP's addon loading system (the reason for the memory map error).

Lag is the time it takes a signal from your computer to reach the multiplayer server and back again.  Addons do not cause lag.

They may however cause video drag.  They are two different things and are forever mixed up.  Bad.

It basically stores addons into memory in a different manner than it did before,I dont really know what is different exactly, but i guess it stores it in the swap file of the hard drive.
Rreason i think this is because it is able to store more data than my total ram can hold, much more, so where else can it go

If this is the case, clear your C Drives of all the surplus rubbish that is stored on it and make a larger swap file size

Thanks Terox, this explains a lot.  :D

I tried running OFP with the -nomap switch yesterday, and it ran slower that running with conventional memory mapping. This is probably because I have about 200MB remaining on C: and 512MB of DDR RAM...

I've been meaning to clear out my HDD anyway  ::)
