Title: North Devon Terrain...
Post by: CBFASI on 21 Aug 2002, 04:47:39
Well I have done more to my terrain I am making and though I would let everyone see the pics.

With the hopefull release of O2 much of what you see will actauly be scrapped and replced with new objects such as buildings and solid hedges (round here about 6-7foot high and 5 foot wide...)

Anyway.

Pic1

Piccy no longer available, but check later in this topic

A general view of the new airfield textures, the pink and yellow lines are for object placement and will be removed when I have finished placing the objects.

Pic2

Piccy no longer available, but check later in this topic

This image shows the apron and the area where the hangers will sit, they hangers will be on the right of the picture, between the junctions on the straights, note each of the hangers is over 200ft in length.

This is a pre O2 image of one of the 2 types of hangers int he above, the opposite end of this is open acroos the whole width of 100ft
(http://www.ironfoot.net/cbfasi/images/HinHgr2.jpg)

Again larger images available on my website

Some of the older pictures are also on my website but I am not putting them on here again..

CBFASI's Homepage (http://www.ironfoot.net/~cbfasi)

I estimate that this will not be finished until the new year, mainly due to the shear volume of objects to be placed.  This terrain is extremly dense with many small enclosed fields, in many ways much like Normandy.

Its a local project for me, I live just 2 miles from the eastern edge of the actual map, and the terrain is based on a real location (but not 100% acurate, am not that mad).

Yep certainly is looking good, nice one m8

I mentioned that ilsDirection prob on the official forum as a bug, so hopefully they'll sort it in a patch, and you can get that lovely lookin runway going properly.  8)

Keep u posted if i hear anything.

Oh, and don't rush it to get it made, i know it'll be a pain in the ass to get all the objects positioned, but the more time you spend on it, the better its gonna look  ;D

Keep it up!!

Hey all that looks great...Hope you get that object number down with the new hedges you are gonna make... I think your island will be one of the best islands around (next to mine ;D )
Just kidding it will be much better than mine.

One of the best airports I've seen! :o

Wish I could make textures as good as that...(it that's what you used for the runways...)

Anyway, looking very good...
Puts mine to shame... :-[
Title: Re:North Devon Terrain...
Post by: CBFASI on 22 Aug 2002, 00:56:17
Well theres 344 individual textures on that airfield, thats a 3728Kb pbo just for the textures.......
The textures weren't as hard as I thought they would be, but you need alot of patiance.

I had a map of the area, scaled it so that for every 50m I had a 128pixel range.

Then drew and filled in the areas.
This the boring part....
Set up a grid 128x128, set snap grid ON, then made selections of every texture that had more than just grass, noted postion and saved just the seleciotn using a name relating to its postion.

Converted all to correct TGA, then...
Loaded each texture one by one into texview and changed to a paa.

Loaded all into a  pbo and the rest was very easy, using he simple co-ordinates I used.

In this case it means the field above cannot be changed without redoing alot of work, I actaully completely scapped the old version of these textures and there was over 700 in that one.....

I may soon be able to solve the hedge/object limit problem if this rumour about Oxygen is correct.  I hope to do a simple grass bank with bushes on, in 25m,12,6m and 3m sections so they can be placed alongside the roads (and other hedge locations)
It will be based on the hedging around here which go from 4ft-10ft high and on average is 5ft thick

I will do a few with passable gaps and hope to make it so that men generally cannot go over (unless they find a gap), wheeled vehicles cannot but tracked can.

This would reduce the number of objects by at least a factor of ten as far as the hedging would be concerned.

As for the Ils I am resetting it to use one of the disused runways, its temporary but it should work as its about 30deg from north.  Oh Marksman can you put that bit all about how to do it again up, its gone and I never saved the pages.

This is a long project and I wont rush it, I criticise it every time I drive through the area, and now due to the above rumour I am assesing the number of new houses I will need to build as non of the ones in OFP or OFP:R come close to the ones built here in the last 0-40 years, yeah a few old ones might look similiar but in general not.

I estimate in the region of 100 new buildings, including those on the airfield (thankfully the married quarters buildings are all a standard design...)

I also hope to do signs etc,  including the speed limit signs..

 ??? ??? ???
Now heres a question.  Here in the UK we use Mph, but the game uses Km/h..
Should I do the signs as correct for UK or use metric? ???

Lets just say this map is hard work for one alone but due to the way Wrpedit presently works, most maps are really a one person job unless you have friends nearby or have fast internet connection (56k sucks).

I will let yuo all know whats gong on as I work on this as I am sure to need questions answer along the way.

Oh yes I have already set up the number plates...

Re: the ils stuff

I moving house at the moment, which means i can't get to my own computer for a while.

But as soon as i'm sorted i'll post the stuff back up on here.

In the meantime, the tut was in the OFPEC tutorials section, under WrpEditing, so if that comes online sooner, have a look on there.

On the subject of British airbases, would anyone consider doing Coningsby?
Title: Re:North Devon Terrain...
Post by: FltSgt on 26 Aug 2002, 15:00:17
Are you going to put in the residential side of the airfield? And a NAAFI?

What's the GD like on base, are there the pillboxes scattered around? Perimeter fence? Razor wire?
Title: Re:North Devon Terrain...
Post by: mikeb on 26 Aug 2002, 15:31:56
(laughs) - NAAFIs!!!

We really are paying attention to detail aren't we!  That would be fun to see.  Of course SPAR took over that role even though everyone still refers to them as NAAFIs.  If you're going for the RAF bases why not pick one like Brize because it's big and often when there is an ops abroad everyone flies from there.  Or you could splash out and make Lakenheath (in the news recently for more morbid reasons of course, sadly) which the US have.  You could even build the golf-course they have there! (inc 10-screen cinemas and huge malls like all the US PXs seem to have all over the world)

I take it you have a more personal attachment to Coningsby Flt Sgt (?)

Yer, unfortunately an active tonka base isn't the best place to get a good nights sleep tho. :( Food in the JRM is blinding tho.
Title: Re:North Devon Terrain...
Post by: mikeb on 26 Aug 2002, 15:57:34
I don't know what it is but the food in the forces always tastes good.  Must be all the exercise...

What's your trade (or equivalent)?  No need to specify of course but I'm sure many addon editors could use an RAF contact to help get the correct specs or even little quirks into their models.  The sort of little touches of realism that a layman could not acquire from simple research.

At the moment I'm doing training. I've seen bits and pieces of everything, although I really wouldn't ask me about the technical stuff.
Title: Re:North Devon Terrain...
Post by: CBFASI on 26 Aug 2002, 17:38:16
I will answer a few questions...

RAF Coningsbury, well I dont know it, and thus have significantly less referance material.

RAF Brize Norton.  Even worse I have flown out of that and its too big.....

NAFFI's, Married Quarters.   Yes am doing them.

This terrain is a real location, I actually live just 2-3 miles from the eastern edge of it, thus can easily go an look over the terrain I am doing.

As for GD theres very little I am aware of but that can be altered by mission designers.  I do know a couple of years ago the base went on high alert and several sandbag positions appeared.

The base was only active upto 1996 and is no longer an operational RAF base, which is another reason for doing it, less of a security risk..

I have the road layouts sorted but dont actually know the positions of buildings such as the NAFFI, Headquarters, etc...... so I will be making educated guesses unless I can get hold of someone whos been in the base.

At the moment I am restricted to whats available in OFP, but a large portion of the fencing is now placed (several hours) and the base is looking more like a military base now.

The map is not that complete yet and I estimate that less than 20% has been done so far.

I do not have O2 access yet, and until that happens there is only so much I can do with the map..

Title: Re:North Devon Terrain...

Very slowly, leaning on the horn ;D
Title: Re:North Devon Terrain...
Post by: CBFASI on 28 Aug 2002, 17:25:40
Well to make it worse I am going to try and do some British road signs, with all speed limits in MPH.

Don't forgot we drive on the left here too so all signs etc that relate to a certain side of the road will be on the correct side..

As you may also gather a select few have been allowed to see my map direct, they can really tell just how little is actaully done....

I am in the process of testing the ability to re-texture pre-existing objects with limited success..
I can get the textures on, but the objects will no longer load into WrpEdit....

This means no new buildings or roadsigns or fences etc..... until I can solve this.

Title: Re:North Devon Terrain...
Post by: Messiah on 28 Aug 2002, 17:30:33
new road signs - ask stt, he made new ones for his desert map (no O2)

as for driving on the left - you will need to redifine the roads so that the AI will drive on the left instead of the right like on the other islands

Title: Re:North Devon Terrain...
Post by: CBFASI on 28 Aug 2002, 17:39:55
I thought the AI drove in the middle....(just like many of my friends...)

I think the re-textureing is not going to be problem but Wrpedit is at the moment.  Until its fixed I am a little stuck as I can only use whats already available.
Title: Re:North Devon Terrain...
Post by: FltSgt on 28 Aug 2002, 17:59:42
The AI does generally drive in the middle but when two vehicles meet, they will (when they don't crash) pass on the right.
Title: Re:North Devon Terrain...
Post by: CBFASI on 29 Aug 2002, 12:45:30
The little problem I had, well its been solved and heres a piccy of what effect its had on the unfinished Married Quarters.

Although the buildings look good, when you get close you spot that the 3d model windows and doors don't match, and until I get O2 it will do, as in the end these are temporay.

I will be altering the texturse as I am not happy now I can see them in game, but thats only a minor problem now...
Title: Re:North Devon Terrain...
Post by: Marksman on 29 Aug 2002, 20:43:06
Looking damn good pal

Just a suggestion, (dunno how easy it would be to do tho):

Where a road meets another road (like the T junction near the bottom of the pic), the textures look unrealistic.

Is it possible to edit the tire marks on the roads, so instead of just stopping dead, they connect up. So for the T junction example, there would be curved tire tracks that connect up.

Does that make any sense ???  :noo:

I'll post a pic of what i mean in a sec

p.s the Defining Airstrips tut is now available again, have a look at snYpirs topic "OFPEC Wrpedit tutorials"

Title: Re:North Devon Terrain...
Post by: CBFASI on 29 Aug 2002, 20:53:10
I could solve those tiremarks out but it would require altering the road layout to use the existing T junction and I am not happy with doing that

I will look at the original maps as I am sure there are a few locations that do just the same.

Oh I found the runway/ils zip I have. I adjust and re-positined the runway and taxi positions but its not working right now...

I havn't a clue whats wrong..the planes dont even taxi now, they just trun to the correct heading and take off (or try to)

Hmmm, so busy with my great artwork, i didn't see your reply :)

Sounds like you've got one of the co-ordinates wrong.

Could you post the config.cpp up, just the ilsPosition, ilsDirection, ilsTaxi..  bits, and i'll take a look

Also what kinda "shape" are all your taxiing waypoints in?

e.g. the official ones were rectangular

up the runway, turn right, then right again, down the taxiway, turn right, right again, back onto main runway.

Post by: CBFASI on 07 Sep 2002, 18:23:14
Dont worry I am still working on it.

A few are already looking at my terrain, and as they have seen there is a lot more to do..

I have found that I have to manually alter the maximum objects in the flashpoint.cfg to 1024, 256 just dont cut it on my terrain..

I could release it as an on-going beta but I reckon its still got maybe 6 months work on it to do..

I presently have 5 others looking at it and I may increase this but I will decide who based on interest shown (honest interest that is)

Consider that I am working from a actaul walking map with all the roads, hedges, contours, and most buildings marked.  This means I cant just place an building becuase it looks good, I have to check the map and its taking a long time as I have to ensure different areas get lined up.

The roads are the worst as some go right across the terrain and to be out just 1 degree really puts it out at the other end so I am taking it slowly in relative terms.

Also some have mentioned the roads.  I hope in time to be able to replace much of what is being placed as the OFP corners are not tight enough and the junctions also need work also I want the roads with markings.

I will see if I can get a pic or two up in few days but I am starting to run short of space on my ftp.

Oh dont forget I am delayed also by lack of O2 as major parts of the base cannot be completed yet..

Don't forget that I am working alone on this at the moment.

Bad News..... :( :(

The website I used has over done its Bandwith limit so all my pics etc.. are down...

This is likely to be like this till next month as finances are tight (unless I manage to get that sorted)

This does not stop me working on the map which as gained 5km of roads and hedges since the last version.

thats bad news m8, good to see your still soldiering on with the terrain tho. :)

if you need a new website get one from freewebs, 100mb free space, 500mb per month bandwidth, no adverts, counters, stats, chatrooms and it's free!

(good pagebuilder too)
Title: Re:North Devon Terrain...
Post by: CBFASI on 16 Sep 2002, 19:00:44
My colleague who owned the old site has now changed hosts, a bit more space (20mb to 400mb) and 1gb to 5gb bandwith (old site had 1 gb used in 8 days....WOW).

We are having some fun trying to set it back up as its not as simple a host as we where led to believe.

This aside...

The map is looking a bit more impressive with new hedge work under trials and new hangers now in their postions..

With O2 out I am working aay on the buildings.

The hedging is quite nasty in that its not possible to get over it unless airbourne....

I have seen articulated trucks hit hedges around here and come off worse than the hedge....

There are new problems coming up particulary as I am trying to make it so tanks and the heavier armoured vehicles can go through the hedges but not the lighter kit.
So far I have spent 7 hours working on the hedges and I am not finished yet...
Title: Re:North Devon Terrain...
Post by: DeadMeatXM2 on 18 Sep 2002, 13:35:52
well, no one said it was gonna be easy, i have just about mastered the basic functions of O2, and its taken me about 8 hours of work just to put a minigun on the balckhawk!  :joystick: but its worth it if you do it right!

keep it up mate

[edit]

btw, what is your new url?, the old site is gone...
Title: Re:North Devon Terrain...

My site should be back within 48 hours, we have had a change of host and it caused a few problems..but that should be sorted soon.

Oh yes it should be at the old url..

I will also be re-designing my site to emphaise my 2 interests OFP and StarTrek gaming, (I know I could combine the two but not on this forum...)
Title: NEW pictures

based on this response I am really looking forward to next week when I put the next batch of pics, that pic above is already out of date.....and I am away for a couple of days so dont ask for more.

The only warning I will give is my 800mhz(256ram) with geforce 2 64mb is starting to complain with this map, it has much more detail than previous maps (mainly as the area is in reality a lot more dense).

From the ground its not too bad as buildings and hedges and woods will block line of sight but in the air be prepared for stutters, also being so close makes for a large amount of death, fast and quick...

Other catch is I am useless at vehicles (so far) and at some point I would like some vehicles done for the map..

These include a Centurion BARV and DUKW, both are based at one of the military sites.  A Grob 109 would be handy (as civlian), although we can do a jury rig arming of the above..

If you don't know what the above are look them up....

Most buildings at the moment will be non-enterable although that may change if I feel like the extra work.

But......

The hangers are already enterable and the Control Tower WILL BE, and yes I just got back.

The hangers ARE NOT big enough for C130's or even the E2C, although this is not surprising as they were built for WW2 Medium Bombers and Fighters.

Also I have no-operational doors yet, I havn't got that far am still very new to modelling and havn't tried scripts yet

And heres a pic of part of Fremington, a village to the SouthEast of the Airbase, across the river.
(This is an old pic, but little has changed)

Oh yes I forgot, in the second picute 90% of those buildings are TEMPORARY, and placed before O2 was available

I just realised almost no-one knows what the WHOLE area looks like so heres the map image from wrpedit with a few notes on it..

As you can theres a fair bit of water, and I have even put the deep channels in (its DOES make it difference).

You can also see the northern area of the map has a few valleys in, they are small and relatively tight, and they are mostly wooded sides

You still alive and kicking CBFASI?  ;)

Any progress on the island?

About the sides of the map, ofp engine doesnÂ't support inland?

Your right the OFP Engine doesn't support inland.

This means near virtical cliffs on 3 sides of my map, but this still leaves a large area for combat (and if they sort out having bigger islands I can extend)

I am still around, but I have had to slow work on the terrain to get other work complete on the other project.

I am working on a few new buildings including one that is over 600ft in length and 150ft height.

Cheers,
Waterman. 8)

Pictures maybe next week, if I get the time, the real world is interfering a bit.

And yes the Control Tower will be enterable, likely go though door, find ladder, climb to inside tower, mainly as I am not going to do the spiral staircase, its poly intensive.

I might stick a few other rooms in.

Ok no rush, you can live your normal life (Whatever that is, never heard about that...)

Best wishes and we all pray for you, not to get in a unexpected car accident *Wink* *Wink*

I was wondering if anyone is / intends to make specialist vehicles for the airbase. I'm talking about things like the fire tenders or TMVs that are in use on operational stations.

Yeah, these would be great vehicles to have, they would be mainly for eyecandy but what the hell, i'd sure as hell use them in my missions

btw, i would make them, but i've got enough on my plate with Hoffman's Luck, and BAS ;)

I am sorry to say that I am not doing vehicles of my own, but will hopefully be re-skinning existing ones.

I am working on re-skinning Kegs Hawk and if it works out will be contacting him for permission release it, but I am having some trouble with it, mainly as the textures I am using are a bit plain, but are correct for the Training Squadron at the base.

I know for certain that I will need Bedfords Mk's and Landrovers for the various bases on this map, having Army, Air Force and Royal Marine bases.

I also hope to do some troops also, but again its a long term project now.

Minor problem

Priorities
1. Real Life
2. Falklands
3. North Devon

Between 1 and 2 I have had little time to work on number 3 recently, in fact number 1 has had most the last two weeks, big changes in process.

BUT...
I have done a little work on this terrain due to spending last Thursday playing on it for about 12 hours on a local LAN, spotted a few problems, tried out some new ideas.....

I might and I mean might have some pics up in next couple of days of a little item I had some problems with which are now solved..

I have also corrected some big faults I had in some of the buildings but I still haven't worked out pathway lods so AI still walk through my hanger walls when you cant...

I hope to start work after a 3 year break shortly so I will
lose even more time but will hopefully be able to manage it better, its also why time is short for me at the moment getting everything sorted.

I do not want to rush this as as rushed job often means a bad job, also unlike most others this is a real location and I cant just place stuff where I want to (and I wish I could), I am actaully going by maps.

I do check this forum often and am watching with interest the developments, as mentioned before it looks like I may have to expand the team....

ANYONE WHO ACTUALLY KNOWS THIS AREA AND YOUR INTERESTED GET IN CONTACT WITH ME

 :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :(

Some bad news...

I was looking at the smaller Army Camp south of the river (Fremington) and couldnt work out why the buildings looked lost in it..

I decided to check the dimensions again and oppps..

The northern side of the camp is in the correct postion, but the southern side along with the whole village is 100 metres too far south....

You may think this petty but the camp is 50% bigger than it should be (300m across instead of 200m) and the road network wont meet..

As I am trying to reproduce an actaul area I am going to have to correct this which means moving well over 500 objects just 100m.

Unfortunately this will delay my picture taking as will take several hours.

THE GOOD NEWS

The afore mentioned camp has over 20 NEW buildings in it already so I really do look forward to taking the piccys

Heres a pic of some of what I have been working on, back to the Fremington area.

Much has already changed from this picture as a few new obstacles built, and deletation of the trees.

This whole area as mentioned is being completely rebuilt due to an error which I cant believe I actaully made.

Anyway heres the pic

Oh yes you can go over the walls and the up (and down) the climbing net..

Careful use of ladders if your wondering, and its all been checked.

Title: BAD NEWS (SHORT TERM)
Post by: CBFASI on 20 Nov 2002, 16:48:07
Well I know it was coming and its finally happened...

After 3 years unemployed (long story) I have finally got  new job starting on the 26th Novemember.  I also will be moving so this is going to affect my time for the terrain for a few weeks while I get settled down.

At the moment this terrain is second place as I am also working on the terrain for the Falklands Team, and there is several of them...

I will likely do odd bits and when I get settled down to a routine I will hopefully be able to get cracking at this and get in done.

My new roads are looking great and are more British looking, my new hedges are also looking good and are stopping tanks with ease (though if you keep ramming the hedge eventually loses).

Just one last picky of the NEW Fremington Camp, and yes those buildings are the not quite the right colour, but thats still be played around with, note each of these camp buildings have FULL interior walling (thus some hit almost 900 polys).

(Those guys just got back from a yomp across Exmoor)

Well I have got back to doing a little to the map and thought I would show some piccies of the NEW control tower.

I couldnt work out what was wrong with the old one till I showed it to a friend who worked on the building of it.  I soon found out mine was about HALF the size it should be.

Well I re-did it and also did some internal work.

Heres some pictures of it and G8's Tornado, Demolitions Landrover and Falklands Mod Marines.

The work on this map is still very slow as I still have much work to do on the Falklands Terrains.

I will try to keep this topic updated as I add new bits that are worth showing.

Very impressed with it, I haven't been to many places in Devon but the old man used to work in RAF St Athan and the buildings look spot on and I think the assualt course is great especially the cargo net  :D

Well I finally got back to putting some work onto this terrain.

The new Single Accomdation built in the early 1980's, the ground area around has yet to be adjusted to a better look, but the buildings are in thier correct (odd) layout.

2 Parachute stores, building design 11137/41 & 10825/42.  These buildings are at the base and survive from WW2.  Yuo may also notice I re-coloured the hangers

Well its at the base so I did it... (its all the correct size, even the line widths..)
