Has anyone made a rail gun addon?? perhaps a destroyer armed with one??

There's a BFG (Big F**cking Gun) out there somewhere, it might be sorta rail-gunnish ???. And yes, it is actually called a BFG.
It might be on ATWAR.

I will have a look around, I think a rail gun is, or was an experimental weapon using magnets to accelirate a metal projectile to massive speeds, I may be wrong, if there is anyone out there who knows about it let me know.

i think its also called pure fiction... the concept is generally sound... but it would be the size of an articulated lorry with current science... and u'd need a power station to boot ;)

i dont know about PURe fiction but the days of the Eraser EM assault rifle are a few months down the road
although i think making that would completely offset the teams if used for a MP mission

What use is it if it's not portable? -
The amount of energy required for a working railgun is so great that it seems unlikely that a "rifle-style" railgun will be realized in the forseeable future. However, the mass of a modern railgun is not unreasonable for a tank or warship. The US Department of Defense is actively researching these possibilities. Railguns are in active use in fusion energy research, where they are used to inject fuel pellets into Tokamak reactors. NASA is also investigating using railguns to launch payloads into low Earth orbit.

Once the tech's refined, the railgun may well be the new be-all and end-all battlefield weapon. Imagine the sniping possibilities too, about 4km away and you could knock a tank out with one shot. But if it's anything like the Quake railgun, if anyone saw you packing one they'd call you a camping b**tard and everyone would run for it the first chance they'd get ::)

instead of gravity, if the railgun technology is like they say , the major limitation would be line of sight

No, on earth, gravity still plays a part. However, how much a railgun and it's projectile is affected by gravity is in direct relation to how much energy you use to hurl the projectile.
Lots of energy = little affection by gravity
Little energy = lots of affection by gravity
And, we have atmospheric drag affecting the projectile, that is, hitting the air slows it down.
If you were to fire a railgun into empty space however, with no planets around to affect it with gravity, and of course no air to
produce friction, your theoretical maximum length is near endless. The kinetic energy of the round will decrease ever so little each nanosecond, and eventually the projectile will come to a halt, unless it hit something before that. Such as Jupiter or Uranus.
A laser however, that has to physical mass to be affected by drag etc., will keep going until it hits something.

Railguns that Iv seen so far have multiple lethel and non lethel projectile barrels. And square and triangle barrels, I just dont like a sqaure 3 + barreled gun, it looks too fake.
Our enemy would die laughing at our troops carrying around these hollywood guns. They wouldnt bother to shoot at them.

well ok i didnt mean gravity wouldnt affect it i meant it would affect it less than say a howie round or bullet
the latter can drop several inches in a few hundred meters
