Title: Getting Planes to Land?
Post by: SEAL_Sniper on 25 Jun 2003, 05:08:25
Now, as the OFP community has seen a surge of new aircraft add-ons, certain questions come to mind.  Namely, how do we get the AI to land these things?!

My mission consists of a man (the player) starting on-board the plane, which lands at the airbase, and the player gets out.  But I can't get the plane on the tarmac.  I'm using a Hawk C-130 (The revised one) if that matters.  I did a waypoint with herc land "Land" in the init, but that didn't work.  Any thoughts?  Thanks.

The tarmac is generally the parking space for planes.

I apologize, I wasn't clear about my question.  I'm just trying to have him land on the runway.  He won't even touch down.  His landing gear doesn't go down.

This is a common problem in OFP with large aircraft. bis had to compromise when making the ILS navpoints for autopilot landings since all planes would share those same navpoints. Any flight model that doesnt fit into that capability will have major difficulty negotiating the necessary turns to land properly. If the AI is unable to make the turns for a "final" approach, it will never lower its gear and simply circle the area. An altered config.cpp for the island would do the trick, but it seems silly to do that for the sake of making a large plane land. I also downloaded the new C-130 and was unable to get it to land unless I did it myself. There may be a creative way to help a large plane land, but it eludes me... It's up to the addon maker to see that the addon fits into the game properly, but it may require an unrealistic flight model. Supposedly this new version had improved ground steering, but I found it still slides sideways even at very low ground speeds, so even if you could get the AI to land, it's doubtful it could taxi and park.
