Title: Search?
Post by: Mikeyfish90210 on 04 Mar 2005, 17:06:38
Ok i understand the repetitveness of some of the threads that are started. And the forum search function is always said to be used, but have any of you ever used it? Its crap to be fair, you type in one word like synchronize and nothing comes up. And i can be sure that loads or people probably mention synchronization at some point, please can you fix it!  :-[

I agree. Its like google search at times. Put in something like 'globemaster addon OFP' and you will most likely get someone trying to sell you a Ford Escort ::)

Remeber to check spellings aswell. That will mess up the search if its spelt wrong  ;)

Also, if you've used search, and nothing comes up, then theres nothing wrong with posting a new topic  ;D

Now that's just nonsense! When I search for synchronize I get tons of hists. The first hit is this (http://www.ofpec.com/yabbse/index.php?board=6;action=display;threadid=21381;start=0), that looks pretty good to me! ::)

What's wrong with google?  :o

I work as a professional researcher at a news agency and I've never encountered a better search engine. If your scope is too wide you will get loads and loads of hits. Same goes for OFPEC's search (unless it's down at the moment).

Practice a little with your bolean functions and you are bound to find what you're looking for. I've never had any trouble using OFPEC search. Also, OFPEC site isn't very large. You can find most of it's content without searching, just reading topic names and head lines.

You know that you have to set the number of day back to search. Think it's on 60 days by default. So if you don't change it you only search for posts posted 60 or less days ago. :)

@nominesine

I was joking about google  ;)  Its the only search engine I use. But sometimes you get something absolutly nothing to do with your search  ;)

@Garcia

One more tip. Try wording your search differently sometimes. Like, if you searched 'synchronization' into it and get nothing, search 'synchronize' or 'synchronizing' etc. It works most of the time  ;D

The search function is a bit temperamental, though it usually rewards persistance.      I find its best if you select 50 results going back 600 days, searching on only the correct boards.

As an aside, I think its interesting that greg147 used google almost as a generic term for internet search engine.    It's becoming like "biro" or "hoover".

i have also noticed that there seems to be a difference between hitting 'return' after the search word and clicking 'display' or 'search'.

having said that, it can be infuriating sometimes. which is why there are humans on the other end of ofpec i suppose ;)

Trivial knowledge: In the swedish language the world google is used as a regular verb. If you are googling, you are searching for something.

Grammar lesson:
Inf. googla
pres. googlar
past. googlade
past pres. googlat.

Ah, so thats what it means  ;D

I thought it was called that because because 'google' is a really big number (100 0's I think), and google has a really big amount of answers.  ;)
It might be named after a googleplex aswell.

Maybe. But in swedish slang the word has the following meaning:

Google=search

We're only 9 million people in this small country, so we never needed numbers that includes one hundred 0's

W00t? :o

Are you sure that's in Svenska Akademins Ordlista? ;D

I've used the verb, but only in sentances like:

Jag vill hitta bilder, vad gör jag?
Du kan googla.

But you can say that in english too can't you?

I want to find pictures, what do I do?
You can (do a) google

I've read that google has become a english verb...like I said:

to google - to search for information on the internet

something like that :P

I'm pretty sure it isn't included in Svenska Akademins Ordlista (SAOL). Maybe they will discover the word in 50 years or so...  ::)
