Title: (Review Completed) [SP] Fairy Island
Post by: Ex-RoNiN on 26 Aug 2002, 22:10:09
Hi guys,

I have just finished my latest mission, Fairy Island :D

It is not really a beta (already submitted to a few sites), but I thought I would post it here until OFPEC re-openes for good :)

If you find any bugs, please report them ASAP :)

Enjoy :D

Edit: This mission has been reviewed and is available from the Missions Depot (http://www.ofpec.com/missions_depot/index.php?action=details&id=67).

  Hmmm... any  add-ons?   1.46 or 1.75 ?
Do we need the Tinkerbell add-on?  ;D
And hows about a brief description for us ?

Cause right now my mind is running wild with the possibilities  ;D ;D

*Terrorists seize Gay Resort :o
*You must help Peter Pan and the lost boys rescue Wendy and Tinkerbell from Captain Hook.  8)
*Assassinate the Fairy Godmother from Cinderella  ;D

I could go on for days... so please for everyone's sake stop me.. and give us a proper description  ;D

Of course you could do the most sensible thing and read the readme.txt  :o ???

Its for 1.75, no add-ons. All in the readme ;)

Basically, the island has been taken over by evil demons, everyone has disappeared (including ur girl) and you have to save the island.

Found a smalll bug, by the way. When you get the hint to look for "a warrior place...in the dry sea of tranquility", dont go looking at the airport, thats wrong ;)

Ex-RoNiN,

The title of this board says "mission beta testing". So you should not be surprised when I say that you are only allowed to post beta missions in this board. Your mission is already finished and therefore off topic.

3/10 :-\ :'(

Ok, a few things. Firstly, the enemy *does* attack the player ??? I know there is some problems with the first two guys that appear after you made contact with the first lady, but the rest all attack you, quite viciously as well. They don't really attack you when you're in the car though, but I believe this is an engine problem with the AI recognising you.

Regarding the place, I assume it is exploding because you hit the mountains? You are supposed to fly to the little airport island in the north and the mountain ranges in the north are quite high. If you didn't pick up any NV, you are screwed, flying in this wheather. Or is it just randomly exploding?

This is really weird, because the mission did undergo several stages of testing (as evident from the version number) but the two bugs you mentioned never happened ??? Did you play the mission "properly" or did you de-pbo it and go to random locations? That might be a problem....or perhaps the problem is that it was written and tested in 1.85 ???

Bit disappointed with the score tbh :-\

Hallo Ex-Ronin,

first i must say i am also not very happy with this score :-\ , because i would like to give good grades (And this mission is very good IMHO, but i have to test the actual submitted version on the actual Version OFP).
On several test runs (in cadet) i was not attacked. Even the "demons" in the wood, let me slaughter them without resistance. ???

With the plane i do not hit a montain, but after dePBO the mission (i do it always), i think i found the problem:  In the forrests around the demons you kill the player when he enters (hero setdammage 1). What happens if i fly over this area ?

I played the mission thru the normal way on two different computers (both Version 1.91).  Only used the dePBO to check for the problems and to find out where to go (because the hints where not clear enough for me. I find out you mean castles but i was not able to make up my mind where they are exactly on the Island.) If you fix the problems (of course i will try to help you to find the reasons, my best guess is also New Versions Bugs). This mission will be a 7/10 and if you give more hints/GPS and/or save games in the cadet mode a 8/10.

I will replay the mission this evening and try if it only was a Sunday the 13th problem i run into.

I really understand you are disappointed about the score. But i am sure the problems can be fixed with not much work and then you will get a very good score for this mission.

Keep up the good work (i really enjoyed Hamburger Hill)
Greetings Kuro

Yes, I now know what the problems are now ;)

Firstly, the demons do not attack anymore because of some sort of change from 1.85 -> 1.91. I will rectify that, should be fairly easy to do.

Secondly, the player getting killed over special forests, I now remember what it was. Originally the idea was for the player to be unable to enter the forests, 'cos the spirits were gonna kill him. Putting soviets everywhere, however, proved to be way too laggy so I replaced them with triggers, but I seem to have lost a few lines of scripting to make sure the triggers dont get triggered when the player is in a vehicle (like I did for some of the cutscenes).

Did the auto-savegames work for you? They did for me...

I might also fix up some of the cutscenes and replace them with proper camera work, depending on how much time I got. How do you wish me to re-submit?
***********
On an entirely different matter, one of my other pending missions (Hot Winter) will only run correctly on 1.46, and its a bit dodgy 'cos I rushed the release 'cos of the Resistance release. Is it going to get a review based on 1.46 or will it be reviewed with 1.91 and get a similar (if not lower!) score? If it can't be reviewed with 1.46, I think it should just be deleted then?

Hallo,

the autosaves works (and they are ok).
Just a improvement proposal for cadet players would be nice to have some radio saves or a GPS, because sometimes i found my self completely lost in the night (no idea where i am). Then comes a save game handy. For Advanced players it is ok. But for beginners ...

Maybe you can check the players height (z-pos) in the Trigger field so you can kill him when he is on Ground.

Resubmit would be great, because i really like this mission, but was not able to give it a better score (caused by the problems). Just imagine all the people complaining about "This mission got a 7 and is not working and my "Splatter Them all, Rambo is back" only got a 4,..."

About Hot Winter if you mentioned it in the Readme or text that it is only 1.46 no problem (i have now inputted it in the description for you. At the moment Wolfrug is testing the mission.) Bascially i sperate testing for OFP and Resistance Missions.

Basically your mission is a victim of "friendly fire":
- First OFPEC took long time to review it. At the moment i am trying to improve this. But it is sometimes hard, because i have to fight on two places (try to review faster than missions come in; and by some systems trouble old submitted missions are blocked for me to download ).
*Oh great OFP System Admins i call you*
- The Patches from BIS sometimes make Big AI Chances.

IMHO there is no way around in updating missions sometimes, because of the problems mentioned above.  "Normal" players will just download and play the mission on the latest Version of OFPR. The score we give is not a measurement of the abilities of the Mission maker. It is the Value of the mission for the player: For example if you make a great mission but it is not running because the AddOn List is not correct it gets a bad score.

What's all this Cadet mode stuff?  ::)

If your not playing in Veteran mode with Super AI turned on, your just not playing. (or reviewing)

 ;)

GPS is a good idea in any mission.

All missions should be able to be completed in Veteran mode.  Otherwise they should get a lower score.

Hallo,

basically i dream about having two settings for all missions:

The cadet with less enemies, more support, GPS, waypoints and so on.

The veteran mode for all OFP Veterans, John J. 's,  out there.

Of course i review in Veteran, but have a heart for the newbies. There is that wonderful command "Cadetmode", therefore my idea was to have the GPS when you play as cadet. And the hard "lost in the night" when you are veteran.

Greetings
Kuro

where are the ruins????
Title: Re:Fairy Island
Post by: Kuro on 18 Jul 2003, 17:34:54
Hello,

sorry at the moment i have no OFP running to look up the coordinates. But the east castle ruins are on the east side of the lake in the middle of Nagova.
That lake have a big bridge at its south. And an island in his middle. You start on this island. So the castle is south east of the starting point.

The west castle is in the desert in the west of Nagova. Near the occean. Can  you find it ?

If not i will look up the coordinates.

Look on your map for ruins and visit them.

That's the fun of this mission.
