Overviews

The overviews completely fit the "Zombie" theme of this campaign, as they not only show suitable motives, but also feature blood-stained pictures. Overview texts are not given, but this is standard when it comes to campaigns.

Cinematics

Intros, as well as the outros and cutscenes are perfectly done. The camerawork is alright, there are Russian voice-overs with English text, and each piece of camerawork develops the story further and keeps you on the edge of your seat because you want to know what will happen next.

Briefings

The "Plan" section of each Briefing is rather short, because this campaign is not about detailed military action, only about the survival of a small band of soldiers. The "Notes" on the other hand are in the popular diary style which helps immersion and also develops the story. A weapons selection is not available, since the rather inaccurate AK addon is an integral part of this campaign.

Missions

This campaign gives you 5 missions in the survival horror (Zombie) genre. That might put off some people who hate zombie stuff, but to the reviewer, it was refreshingly different. As with many campaigns, the first mission serves as an introduction, but your bloodthirsty enemies appear from the second mission on and never fail to scare until the campaign is finished.

The very nature of a zombie campaign means that the playing experience is rather different. These enemies don't shoot AK's, they don't get reinforced from the air and you will never have to ambush a T-72 for the largest part of the campaign. However, fighting zombies is not as trivial as it sounds.

The enemies are numerous, and coupled with the fact that your AK is not the most accurate rifle around, you will have some very close encounters. If you don't take care, you will be taken down several times by a bite from behind. The whole mix of a rather gruesome enemy, good ambiance (darkness, fog), and expertly chosen music scared the sh*t out of me, even as I was playing this campaign the second time. While most of the missions are rather similar (slay the zombies at close range), they follow a storyline like a movie and are simply thrilling because of the atmosphere that the authors created. The last mission throws in some of the fighting you already know, as you meet "the real enemy".

Special

Well, what's special about this campaign? First of all it's the setting, which is something completely different from the run-of-the-mill tactical military scenarios. The story that has been developed is coherent and interesting to follow, and the atmosphere that has been created is marvellous, with custom voices and custom music throughout the entire campaign. The authors even took the effort to create a "blood stain" paint job for the BRDM, just for this campaign.

Overall

This campaign is the most "movie-esque" I have encountered to date, with entertaining missions tying in with well made cutscenes, it is very hard to stop playing until the very end. Due to the setting, it plays rather differently than conventional ArmA missions, which is refreshing. In the end, a bit of "conventional Arma" is sprinkled on. At this point, there is the potential for an even longer campaign, with more variety between enemy soldiers and enemy zombies to fight.

Bottom line: If you hate zombies: Hands off. If you like the genre, it's a must play, and if you like some variety in ArmA, here is the opportunity to play one of the most intense and frightening campaigns to date.
