Summary

Defend an ammunition depot against a massive Soviet onslaught

Not yet published

Review by Denz

Overview

The Overview is spread over two pages. The first has the usual stuff i.e. a good description of the mission, picture and the version number. While the second page lists the addons required to play Killing Fields which really should just be in the readme.

Intro

The Intro is essentially a briefing in itself. This does mean that it is quite long and repeats some of the information contained in the Briefing. The camera is controlled quite well so it's a shame to see the cross hair still in picture.

There is a scene with a soldier asking a lady out on a date that always makes me chuckle.

Briefing

It can never be said that the author didn't give enough information for this mission. The Briefing consists of the usual objectives along with six pages of instructions. These are thoroughly detailed down to the location of ammunition crates and their specific contents. However, the briefing isn't structured very well, with the objectives being listed on page two, checking these during the mission is a hazardous business considering the nature of the mission.

The notes section takes the form of a diary and again, is a hefty six pages. Not only does the diary provide insight into the set character but hidden away are some very useful snippets of information so it's a very good idea to read them all the way through.

Mission

Killing Fields has a very simple premise. Get to the Depot and defend it. Sounds simple enough - it isn't. This mission is all about fire power and more importantly, fire arcs. Under your direct control is a fire team and you can expect some assistance from the depot guards if the enemy come to close. As you can tell, you are a little short staffed in the personnel department.

While you won't encounter any armoured vehicles you will face a tremendous amount of enemy infantry, coming at you from all directions. There are occasional let ups, giving you chance to replenish ammunition and heal if neccessary - beware of ordering your AI team mates to heal as they may get lost in the walls of the building.

There are a couple of problems with the addons used. Constantly the bayonet error will appear and on uneven terrain the land rovers are a little jerky which does represent a problem as utilising their firepower is vital in holding back the tide of infantry.

Outro(s)

Alongside the outro/win, there are two different outro/loose scenes you can get depending on whether different objectives were completed or failed.

Special

The level of detail is worth a mention. The exceptional briefing and buried among the radio messages are some proper military procedure that enhances the realism factor.

Overall

Killing Fields is a good example of a "defend the base" mission. I don't think I've ever played a mission before that actually made me feel like I really had been in a combat situation. The stress level is exceptionally high as you struggle to maintain the perimeter against overwhelming odds.
