Overview

Combined arms are the true bread and butter of Operation Flashpoint. Here Bremmer has laid before us a veritable feast, as you lead an infantry squad in an assault utilizing armour and air support.

Intro

The mission begins with a well-crafted intro, displaying some intelligent and interesting camera shots to set the scene. The choice of music also adds considerably to the mood.

Mission

One thing that really stands out in this superb mission is the standard of scripting. As the attack commences, your squad starts yelling at each other (and sometimes the enemy). Rather than being random voice files, these exclamations fit perfectly into the situation. Your squad mates yell when they have been shot, or spot an enemy. As well as being a very nice effect, this substantially aids the player's situational awareness. It is almost possible to tell what is going on by just listening to what your squad is yelling.

Unfortunately there were a couple of problems that detracted (very) slightly from the experience. Though not that lengthy a mission, a retry point placed mid-mission somewhere would save the player the frustration of having to start from the very beginning every time they are killed. A scripting error (divide by zero) also reared its ugly head at one stage, though the mission didn't seem to be visibly effected.

Possibly the biggest issue would be the fact that to complete the mission the player must clear the town of every single infantry unit. This can have the effect of making the player run around for ten minutes looking for the last guy, who has been hiding under a bush the whole time.

Overall

(Review Date: Jun 2003) However these minor problems don't have much impact on the mission as a whole. This is a well thought out mission of extremely high quality, worthy of the time of every one of you wannabe infantrymen out there.
