The All New Dynamic COMREF!

Way back in the mists of time when Operation Flashpoint was but a young upstart in the gaming world, an enterprising individual named Lustypooh collated the first Unofficial Command Reference, and along with Niosop compiled lists of commands and their functions. The Command Reference was developed by various editors who added lists of weapons and vehicles - in short, everything an editor would need as a reference for the game.

Bohemia Interactive eventually released their own Official Command Reference for Operation Flashpoint, and it is still in circulation today. Shortly afterwards OFPEC built its own online COMREF, a combination of the Unofficial and Official versions, along with helpful comments and findings from experienced editors.

Then, in January of 2006 OFPEC suffered probably the worst crash in its history, and almost all data was lost. While the site was painstakingly reconstructed, Planck took it upon himself to rebuild the OFPEC COMREF, using his own records along with excerpts gleaned from the Wayback Machine. The result was a handful of interlinked HTML files which restored almost all of the original COMREF content.

Since the COMREF was considered as historically one of the most useful parts of OFPEC, it was the first resource to be added to the new post-crash site. Around the same time Bohemia Interactive began talking about a new Wiki for the Community, and OFPEC staff were among those invited to make the first contributions. Naturally we decided to start with the Command Reference, and Planck - by now a COMREF veteran - was joined by Hoz and Mikero, and together they began entering the data.

The Biki developed and grew but Planck always returned to his first project at OFPEC, adding and tweaking. ArmA was released and with it a host of new commands, and Planck dutifully entered them by hand, line by line. He didn't complain when it was suggested we offer separate lists of old and new commands, he just got on and did it. When it was suggested we should have pictures added to the vehicles pages, there was no grumbling from Planck, he just got on and did it. For two years now he has looked after the static pages of the COMREF and kept them up-to-date.

It's therefore no small thing that as part of the ongoing development of the site, we have finally made the OFPEC COMREF dynamic and database-driven. We've re-enabled the comments system, and added a command type filter. Further improvements are planned but we've released the current build for use - if for no other reason than to preserve Planck's sanity.

Special thanks go to Planck, Hoz and h- who helped with data entry for this new version. Take a look at the lists of commands beginning with C or S to understand the effort they put in...
