Need for an Animation-Editing Board?
« on: 22 Dec 2002, 18:54:54 »
I guess you guys would make the call, but I thought I would bring it up.  It is a very different field of addon making, and with the new tools out for it, maybe a board devoted to it would be nice.

If you decide not to however, which board would be best suited for animation-editing questions?

If the tools & the spirit is there, I'm hot for this board;
I have an "animals" request thread on the "Addon Ideas" board, and we've been
discussing these issues... my only prob. is I dunno sh|t about custom anims myself,
but it sounds like a frikkin cool idea...

can't have too many boards so plz go ahead & give us one, lads!  :-* 8)

(is it just me, or does ofp have this odd 'addictive' magic?)

I've been ofp'ing for almost 1½ year & I just can't grow tired of this bloody game!  ??? :)

awesome feeling...

Bring it on!

Well, there is Maya2rtm as LCD mentioned, but that may not see too much use, because Maya is not a common piece of software.

There is also OFP-Anim (v0.93) by someone called Dschulle.  I would post the link from ofp-zone, but the site is down.  I believe you could find some information about it at http://www.ofp-editing.de ... that is, if you can read German.

I downloaded and played with the tool, it is a standalone program and it successfully opened a p3d and an rtm (I was able to view an animation frame by frame).  It supposedly has the ability to create/edit animations, but I could not figure it out, too many buttons and such, and the readme was completely in German.

Two things:

1. Tomb using the words "Hot", "for" and "animals" in the same paragraph is just scary. ;) ;D

2. The main thing that the Admins would be asking is this:

Is the drain on resources, however large or slight, going to be worth the addition to the boards and community? :-\

Basically, is this going to be a big part of editing that the community is going to get into?
OR
Is it just going to be for a select few people and not worth adding more burden to our already loaded Forums?

Convince us of the need, and the Admins will have a good idea of what this will be worth to everyone. :)

The tool looks rather impressive Tomb, but I did not get anything working.  I will just wait for some tutorials (in English, hopefully  ;D ).

Perhaps it is not worth its own forum, but at least could you alter one of the forum descriptions to include "...and animation editing", so we do not have people confused on where to ask questions about this topic.

I think it would be enough to include it among the other topics discussed in "Addons Editing: General Addon Editing related queries and discussion. ie: texturing, config files, hex editing, animating, etc."

I'll be using it....Just as soon as a tutorial in English is produced for it. (I'm also getting an error msg--"wrong format" when attempting to load a BIS or user-made add-on...)

lol Nooney

i think anythging the Tombmonster says is scary  ;)

as for a new board - i see no point - doesnt this just come under addons editing still? This is, technically, editing of and addon so should remain in that board?

just a thought

(lol - Tomb is hot for animals) (better than hot for Kiwis, hey Nooney?)

I don't see a need for such a board at the moment. The OFPEC boards are already very diversified. In my opinion we're pretty close to the limit of diversification. Opening another board for a very narrow field of OFP editing would be a step to the wrong direction.

I have played around with the new utility and compared to tools like Oxygen, animation editing doesn't seem to be too difficult once you get a hang of it. Free to ask any question about that field at the existing boards. We'll watch the discussion and may decide about the need for a dedicated board later.

I am about to add the anim tool to the tools department of the ed depot, in the 'graphics' section.

I am still waiting for permission from the author to host it, however.

If anyone figures out how to use it, or can convert the readme to english, please do so and let us know!

cheers :-*
