-Mission concept copy&pasted and expanded to be used in Iron Front/ArmA3

Comments:
-This is the first mission for my new dynamic mission concept using heavy scripting to generate alive feeling life around player, no matter where on map he goes. Many tasks spawn randomly giving different feeling on each play. This mission still have some more fixed positioned tasks, but I plan to add more and more dynamic tasks and other features in future.
-When I get this more ready, I will add the mission also to the current campaign. Now as separate mission.
-Let me know how this works, is the performance good, is the difficulty level too high? Its smooth on my i7 2600K, but I can always add custom settings for older CPU´s if the FPS feels bad.
-Let me know if you have any task or feature ideas. I am trying to make this feel like light RPG (expanded Black Forest)

Hints:
-Keep moving after enemy contact
-Its safer in forests
-Unlimited Savegame 0-0-1
-Medicpacks 0-0-0

First!

Muhaha Cool2 Only the name of the mission and the location of the screenshot will make me test this! Cheesy Great to see something new from you!

Btw. you are making a campaign? NICE! Tell me more?! Smiley

Thx Smiley, That location was perfect for one "important camp" Wink, its currently made as fixed location, but at somepoint I could make it random too, there is other nice similar locations for that camp too. Just need to do some cutscenes multiple times.

This is a sequel mission for the Chasing Grim Reaper-campaign. I will attach this later to it as bonus content with one other suprise when I get this mission more improved. Not yet new campaign coming, unless you would think this mission as campaign. Its currently 2-4hour long if you compelete all the tasks, but I plan to add much more optional tasks for different factions.

Little worried how the scripts end up working - will there be memory leaks? At least I spend much time to optimize the scripts with this guide:
http://community.bistudio.com/wiki/Code_Optimisation

The spawning scripts became much more performance friendly after I ended using the 500x slower version of createVehicle. Cheesy

Ah, ok.

By now I know that region like the back of my hand! Smiley
I'll test this next week when one of my numerous "university burdens" falls from my shoulders.

Interesting page, that code optimisation thing.

Sure, no hurry. I also had pause with arma editing few weeks ago when preparing for exams Smiley There will be anyway updates time to time. I need to create proper outro for the mission next.

The code optimisation thing is really handy. I got rid of heavy stuttering with that. Currently the mission works very smooth for me. You can still notice tiny snaps time to time when driving (with i7 2600k), but not big performance drops.

Wow.. this is a big one! I guess I did everything wrong I possibly could so it took me around 12h to complete this beast : )

Played with official 1.60

Overview:
Awesome Overview/Loading image.

Intro:
The intro does a good job setting the mood of the things to come. I watched it twice, first time was perfect, but the second time the chopper went out of frame. The incoming tracers look great.

Briefing:
A few grammar and spelling errors but I guess these will be fixed in time. Information on situation and tasks is limited but sufficient, fitting the mission's style. The briefing relates to before the crash, but that's not a problem I guess.

Mission:
A huge scale mission with great immersion and VERY good functions. Since this is a dynamic mission I will not elaborate on everything I did and try to focus.
When I reached the NAPA leader, i had speed running on 4x so the cutscene kicked in at 4x and I had to reload, forcing setacctime 1 imo should be a part of any cutscene.
After this, i embarked into a player's nightmare trying to get to the CDF's camp totally outnumbered. After about 25 fails I reloaded to a savegame before the NAPA cutscene.

This time a full blown attack wave on NAPA takes place and I manage to capture two BMP's, also this time I get the hint about the location of Mr. Swartz's who was mentioned to me by the NAPA leader.
(...)
After meeting the CDF I embark on a rather long trip, completing all the tasks on my list. I encounter quite a lot of jets, taking them down is very difficult because the view distance appears to be set by script.
After I am done with the tasks, I am left completely confused about what to do. Not elaborating further, I arrive back at the NAPA hideout 2.5h later and just accidentaly see the action menu.  Cheesy
It would be a good idea to add the 2nd meeting with the NAPA leader as a task when the necessary conditions for the attack are met. I didn't remember I was required to go back to the hideout.
The joined attack with NAPA and CDF is breathtakin. Since I had those BMP'S it turned into a the best mechanized infantry experience I had with A2 so far. I had to try two times though, on my first runs the FPS dropped to 7 while I was breaking through. Interesting about this was that it only happened after the fighting started and only if I saved the game or looked at the map - no idea what caused this.

Some observations: I probably did it the wrong way, but previous to the combined attack I had already been in Vybor (to destroy the supplies) and also at the airfield (while driving around clueless after completing all tasks). Both were not heavily defended as it's the case later at the joined attack, which somewhat reduces the plausibility at this point. It should be almost impossible for the player alone to destroy the cache at Vybor or any AA vehicles behind those lines prior to the big attack.

Summing up:
The dynamics and details in this mission are incredible, I can only imagine how many functions are at work here or how much of the events are actually randomized.
All of Chernarus is at life, wherever I go there's animals, civilians, Airforce and patrols who spot me and call in artillery. Wow! Also the design of structures is awesome and adds great feel, like it's always the case in your missions : )
The last task was a great climax. I am sure I missed some tasks, I will definitly play this again. Thanks for all this hard work!

I was wondering, since it's being stressed to maintain good relations with Napa/CDF and locals if I could have done anything more to establish those. Locals never spoke to me (except about the doctor in the beginning) and I didn't really have an option to decline a favour.
Some possible confusion on the player's end can be avoided by making things more clear, like how to interact or meeting NAPA a second time or when to communicate with locals.
Since the 1.60 patch I have a lot of issues with the AI using binoculars all the time instead of doing what they were ordered. Unless the bino's are vital for something I recommend removing them for the AI.

Hey, thanks for heavy testing and feedback. Smiley There is definitely still much to do, especially the surroundings for enemy base are not acting right yet if player sneaks there before activating the final tasks. English corrections will be later, I will still probably add and change much of the dialog. More transportation vehicles is also needed.

I will rework with the AA and supply depot locations more. There could be more small enemy camps all over the map with those in them. Places that player could avoid, but also capture if he wants.

Suprising how different your trip to CDF was, I was worried not to face any enemies when driving there, but seems like things could turn into very deadly sometimes. Cheesy

I forgot to add the information how to begin the assault, its fixed in next version too. I also will tweak that assault, its currently too heavy event. AI units could be spawned much slower for that. Its some bit harder now to tweak these missions since my new CPU runs now almost anything. Smiley Good thing you mentioned that, I meant this beta mainly for performance feedback. Smiley

You can improve relationship towards civilians when saving them from insurgents. Randomly there is a massgrave with alive civilians and enemies around it. If you kill them and get closer to the alive civilians they thank you. I meant to have fire-effects on random houses in villages that are in trouble, but last minute changes broke that for the 0.8 version. Its fixed in next version too.

When saving civilians few times, armed civilians are randomly spawned into villages. I will try to have more effects from that relationship too. Also add other tasks with effects. In next version, you can destroy enemy artillery, there is a event from heavy injuring (player is dragged to nearby forest for healing), capturing supply truck (when bringing it to the NAPA HQ) bring extra random weapon to new weapon crates in NAPA HQ. I will also try to have outro for next version.

I will also remove those binoculars from team-members.

Version 0.9 is available. I tryed to fix all reported issues and much other. There is also much other fixes and some additions. I will continue working on this, but wanted to hurry few important fixes in this. I left the supply depot to the challenging place. Its meant to hurt much the enemy, but also require much more skills to complete it. The Anti-Air vehicles I moved to more easy places.

I didnt yet tweak the intro camera. Its attached to chopper, but somehow it floats much. Its in the to-do pile, but I will try to improve the mission itself first, before burning out with that issue. Wink

Edit: I had broken file name in earlier link. Now fixed with new link.

Hello SaOk, here is my beta test report. Smiley
Unfortunately I didn't finish the mission - but just read on. Smiley

Mission version: First beta version you posted here.
Mods used: I began without any mod. Later I started with that addon from Zipper5 which prevents infantry using AT against infantry.

OVERVIEW:
- Great. Good picture, mission description and loading screen. All worked finely.

BRIEFING:
- There are a lot of typos (also in the whole of the mission) - you might want to check these.

- Other than that all is clear and the player knows what to do.

- The pistols of the other AI units should be removed to prevent the pistol bug which happens from time to time. I also removed all binoculars because the units stop all 200 meters to use it. Smiley

- The SMAW ammo was a weak one - and I had to add it manually ot the own gear.

INTRO:
- Great intro sequence. The tracers and the chopper going down really were beautiful to watch - even though I also had the chopper going outside the camera angle at one point. But I didn't feel this looked odd.

MISSION:
- In the conversations sometimes it is difficult to get who is talking (at least until the voices are implemented). You could do something like:

Doctor: Sure. I'll help you! Blabla…

- You used taskhint. However it would be better to use these either before or after a conversation - not in between. Because this causes a bit of confusion, since the player has to follow the conversation and also wants to check what task was checked / created.

- About the part where you find the doctor and ask him to help you:
The fact that I didn't know who was talking, confused me that much that I didn't understand that I should follow the NAPA guys to help them. I stayed at the Doc waiting for him to move to the chopper and the NAPA guys went on without me and so I lost them. Eventually I saw the marker on the map and went to the position but nevertheless you should make it clearer that the player has to follow the NAPA guys. Either make the player join the NAPA team or give the player a hint so he knows what do do.

- When I arrived at the doctors position, I saw him suddenly switching to the healing animation. Same happened later at the chopper wreck. Switch the anims earlier so that the player doesn't see it.

- After the team was healed: All of a sudden there appeared a truck marker on the map. Smiley Cool, but - was it mentioned by someone earlier? Smiley

- Anyway, I took it and drove to Mogilevka. On the way there there was some stuttering (FPS drops).
Just to add to this subject: There were micro stutterings in the whole mission - I think that this happened because new camps and patrols were set. But I'll write a bit more about this later.

- The civilians are dynamic and this has advantages but also some downsides. The downside is that I can't imagine that half of a village's population will stand still on the nearby fields at 5 AM. Cheesy This felt a bit noncredible. Smiley
But one moment later then I saw one of the advantages of the dynamics: A civilian with a motorbike came along and crossed a field, like as he was taking a short cut. That was cool and contributed to the immersion.

- Talking about immersion: Crossroad notified that the enemy was using artillery. I thought "Ok" and went on but after 1-2 minutes I heard the impacts of the artillery in the distance… Wow - what an atmosphere! Smiley Cool!

- The subtitles at the conversation with the NAPA leader on the castle were way too short. Btw. - I loved his pet looking out the castle! Wink Cheesy Probably just a random spawned animal.

- Somewhere along the way I had to reload the game, then a script error appeared (see screenshot).
And another script error came when I was near the antenna after talking to Mr. Schwarz (see screenshot).

- I think it would be good if you don't delete the markers from the map after an objective is completed. After destroying the antenna (task from Mr. Schwarz) I wanted to fill my ammo with some AT rounds, but the marker of the ammo box was gone. So I couldn't find the crate anymore...

- In the "truck with mines" near Zub there were no mines at all.

- The CDF commander sent me to Gorka to destroy a AA truck. After this I went to the village and experimented a GREAT firefight along the CDF reinforcements (with tanks) and my unit members. That really was cool! Smiley

- An enemy plane was around us for the biggest time of the mission. It's nothing bad but I think that the player will suspect pretty quickly that the mission maker has something to do with that. Smiley I mean - did you command the plane to circle the player's position?

- When I was around Vybor, suddenly the performance dropped significantly (down to 12 FPS). It stayed like this for about 5 minutes, then it went to normal FPS again (in my case: 30-40 FPS with approx. 3500 meters viewdistance).

- Sometimes the camp guards are setpossed into the ground (see screenshot). And some are spawned in the middle of roads. Not so bad though.

- In my opinion a repair truck would be great, so I could repair vehicles that the AI groups leave (e.g. choppers, tanks, etc… Smiley ). You could embed this into another task, for example "There at XY are support vehicles - you can conquer them if you need them!"

- That "depot" near Vybor… Whistle Not sure why you called it depot, as it was part of that huge and powerful Chedaki frontline. Cheesy I was fighting that line (and the region around it and Vybor) for more than 3 hours in total and suddenly the depot objective ticked off. Smiley By that time almost all enemies of the line were down. Smiley

MISSION WALKTHROUGH:
Ok, now that I told you some bugs, here we go for a "walktrough" of how I played the mission and what I experienced while doing it.

Check the MAP with my route. Smiley It was a hell of a march (so far).

0. The beginning of the mission.

1. Searching for help - talked to a woman, who told me about the doctor at 2.

2. The doctor - a confusing conversation (who is talking?) and the NAPA guys ran away and I didn't know what I was supposed to do.

3. Saw the marker on the map "Help NAPA" and moved there. Everything worked ok there.

4. Returned to the wreck and the team was completed.

5. Went to the truck and drove to 6.

6. Disembarked the truck and went on on foot (for the whole rest of the mission I was on foot). Cheesy

7. First conversation with the NAPA commander

8. Searched for the NAPA camp. There I was told about Mr. Schwarz' position

9. Conversation with Mr. Schwarz - he told me to destroy the antenna at 10. AT ammo was supposed to be at 11.

10. Destroyed the antenna, had to run the first time because of artillery fire. Smiley

11. Since after the antenna the ammo box marker disappeared, I searched for the AT ammo at 11, but didn't find anything.

12. Because of that I moved to the truck - but there were no mines inside of it. Only some magazines, IIRC.

13. From there I went to the CDF camp and talked with the commander there. He sent me to destroy the AA truck near Gorka

14. The truck was destroyed and …

15. … I moved into the village and this firefight taking Gorka was absolutely awesome! Smiley Great AI skirmish!

16. From Gorka I moved to destroy the AA positions around Vybor. 16 was the first one.

17. Some scary firefights with enemy reinforcements, as I was trying to escape south west.

18. First contact with that monster of a Chedaki front line! Smiley It was very impressive! Had to avoid it though because the enemy was killing me inoumerous times there. A friendly tank from the CDF killed the second AA truck for me - so cool! Smiley

19. So I went to that hill south east of Vybor and was involved in a front line fight again - many many deaths and reloadings… Smiley

20. I fought myself through and cleaned the front line (including the third AA truck) and finally could move further to the north west to search for the fourth AA vehicle.

21. Took position on that hill and could overwatch the whole region of the last red circle (AA area). But I could not see anything.

22. Then I went down and searched around for the last AA and suddenly there were enemy groups wandering around and more camps, which however weren't there when I overwatched the region from the hill.  Then I found the AA and another time a friendly vehicle( I think it was a CDF-tank again) assisted me and destroyed it.

23. Between 22 and 23 I had some nasty and bad fire fights against enemy troops and eventually reached 23 where NAPA guys had a little camp including a ammo box where my group could rearm. Had a nice talk with the NAPA guys and they gave us some of their BBQ before we went on to 24

24. Thick fog came up and thus the plan to overwatch the Vybor area to find the enemy depot failed. Smiley So we went around the city, looking for the depot.

25. Met another NAPA camp, another friendly chat, but no one knew where that depot would be. So we went on to the south…

26. … and reached the "hill of death" again and tried to continue cleaning the front line - this time to the east of the hill. I could not make it and suddenly remembered "Hey - didn't they say something about yellow smoke?" Gladly I had taken a yellow smoke grenade with me at the BBQ camp (23). Then we tried to evade some 200 meters to the south on the fields. There I threw the smoke and some minutes later there really came some NAPA reinforcements in form of some infantry groups and even a tank from the CDF - wow - I just felt "Dammit, that is so cool!" Smiley Smiley Together we attacked the front line again and SUDDENLY: The task to destroy the depot ticked off. YES!! Smiley

27. I didn't know what to do next, then I read in the first beta test that the player returned to the NAPA leader at Zub. Ok - I did the same and went to the castle again.

28. Talked to the chief to begin the assault. The funny thing here was that the front line already had been taken out almost completely. But at this time I didn't know what else would come later. Smiley

29. So we went to the NAPA meeting point south of the front line

30. Some nice AI skirmishes and firefights where we also were involved - assisting the NAPA guys.

31. Meeting with CDF and NAPA

32. Third attack of the front lines. Cheesy Haha Smiley And hey - Chedaki forces had reinforced their positions brutally - they had everything there - tanks, infantry, choppers. But together with NAPA and CDF we crushed them again in a very very intensive and long fight. But the task ("Break through") didn't tick off somehow… Sad

33. Then I went to Vybor (as the briefing said that we would see us there for the next step), but no one was there and the objective continued un-ticked.

34. Then I decided to continue cleaning the front line (the eastern part of it), took a sniper rifle from the NAPA ammo box at the crossroad (34) and began shooting enemies who were trying to reinforce the front line. A CDF hind was circling the front line, shooting infantry units.
Suddenly we had to run again because of the artillery and moved to 35.

35. From 35 we moved south again to the front lines in the hope that the task "Break trough" would finally tick off - but unfortunately nothing happened.

36. From 36 to …

37. … 37 I tried to continue fighting the Chedaki, but without success. I think that the problem is that (it seems that) always new units spawn when we go from one end of the front line to the other - and viceversa. This way the line can't be cleaned as every time new enemies spawn.
Then I gave it up.

OVERALL:

About the dynamic elements of the mission:

With the dynamic war between the parties you created something VERY special! I think that the last time I felt immersed so deeply into a continuous conflict between two sides, was in the OFP mission Abandoned Armies by THobson. And this is really is one of the "highest awards" I can give to missions like this. Smiley It was just awesome to whitness so many skirmishes all indepent of the player.
The situations where there were cooperation between the player and AI -> just phenomenal!

About the spawning elements:

I think that the downside of this dynamic is the fact that always new units are spawned. I noted some points that try to make this clearer:

1. You can't "escape" the war. If you try to do a large flanking manouver, you will AGAIN meet enemies - you can't go anywhere, where no activity is going on.

2. Read number 22 of my walkthrough. ->  You can't see anyone from far, but when you go there, there are enemies.

3. The microstuttering, which happens, when the player moves on and new units are spawned. This point however is just a minor one.

Conclusion:

This really is an awesome mission! What makes it that special really is (as mentioned) the dynamic war between NAPA/CDF and Chedaki/Russia (?). The war really is going on in Chernarus and the player experiences this in many many situations. That means that the war is not only a background story written in the mission's overview and in the briefing, as many other mission authors do - it really IS there. This makes this mission a great experience.

You should make the objectives clearer (what to do, where to go, etc.) and maybe find a way to make the unit spawning a bit more "unnoticeable" for the player.

Other than that I see a hammer of a mission coming to the game! Smiley

Great job!

Just a small addition:

I also felt like Mad_Cheese mentioned (but I wasn't at the airfield):

Quote
Some observations: I probably did it the wrong way, but previous to the combined attack I had already been in Vybor (to destroy the supplies) and also at the airfield (while driving around clueless after completing all tasks). Both were not heavily defended as it's the case later at the joined attack, which somewhat reduces the plausibility at this point. It should be almost impossible for the player alone to destroy the cache at Vybor or any AA vehicles behind those lines prior to the big attack.

Small addition Nr. 2:

I didn't see anything of those "additional tasks", which are mentioned in the briefing. I tried to talk to civilians here and there but there was no option... No one called for help and I saw no prisioneers or mass graves (I read your reply above).

Thanks for playing and great feedback. Smiley Many good points, I will add those conversations to have the names before dialog, also tweak hints to better places.

The truck was mentioned by Doctor in his last line. That Mogilevka fps drop is mystery or I might spawn too much civilians for it. I will tweak those too and add custom setting to set the amount of ambient life at start of the missions. The micro shuttering is hard to remove totally, it really comes with the camp / animal / civilian / traffic / army units / vehicles -spawning. I already optimised it a lot, from massive stuttering to the current. I have had slightly different performance with different game versions, sometimes its almost unnoticeable with my CPU, but I will work on performance more. The last task should already be more performance friendly in new 0.9 version.

I will tweak those civilians to appear less during night Cheesy The reload error is from mando scripts, I havent found a way to fix it. I should check if he have updated the script from what version I am using. The Schwarz error is mine, I will fix that.

The minetruck is a repair truck, there is no visible mines in it. Instead you need to use the custom radio functions to lay the mines with AI team-members. I havent found yet a way to remove single gear from truck without deleting all so I made it in other way. Smiley

That goat was random spawned. Cheesy I use much "selectbestplaces" and location commands to spawn the life. Those are quite heavy commands so I havent made the loops too strict, to avoid more stutter. With that much life is spawned quite loosely and player may sometimes see the spawning, but I will try to add tweaks for that too.

Also, you are right with the missing life in distance. I made the life spawn/delete mainly 0,4->1,5km from player. Its to save CPU power. But I am planning to try finding ways to spawn stuff to directions where player is looking or going.

The enemy planes should fly over the believed position of player (the same for artillery), but I´ll check that. Those appear to fly for set time (300s) before flying away to be deleted.

I have also spotted some units spawning through the ground. Not sure yet, why that happens.

I could also try to add different zones on map with more unique life multiplyers. Enemy is already more likely to spawn outside of forests and NAPA in forest areas. But else its quite the same, where you go.

In that "Break through"-task you need to head to the marker near the trench lines, after timeout the task is marker done when player is present near the marker. After that there should be a new marker near the Vybor for next task. I will tweak that too. If you clear the units in trenches, then next time those should be friendly units, but again if those are killed then again enemies. Not sure if its working correctly, I will do some more testing with it. Anyway the task should work already.

But I continue working on this slowly adding more functions to spice this concept more.

EDIT:
I will try to improve that depot/final assault aspect more. The mass grave is only civilian task currently. Its not shown anywhere, player need to find those himself. In new 0.9 version, there is always civilians in trouble when the village is on fire.

Btw. that map was cool, did you draw the route yourself or is there a some program/addon for it?

Ok, I understand that to save CPU, it is not possible to spawn objects / units very far away. Looking forward to your tweaks anyway!

I edited the map in Paint - so no addon or program used to draw. The clean map is here: http://www.arma2base.de/content/images/southzagoria.jpg

Gook luck with your mission! It really is fun to play!

I released new 0.95 version, fixing many annoying bugs. If you already are playing older version, feedback from those are also welcome. Smiley

I released new 1.0 version with many changes. Including random positioned NAPA HQ. If you want to make sure its chosen different from old Zub. Save the game just before reaching the NAPA soldiers in trouble (those who are shooting yellow flare after finding doctor). The location is chosen during the dialog. "Project CDF by GossamerSolid" is a optional addon, if you have that those vehicles are randomly spawned with the default CDF vehicles.

Edit: New version 1.1 is here with many hotfixes. 1.0 version was very flawed, I shouldnt have never released it. Sorry if someone played it.  Embarrassed

Currently working on new heavy changes. I am adding russians as new faction. First they are in peace with everyone only light patrolling and guarding few settlements, but if player goes too near or any russian is hurt, there will be new path of tasks in the mission. I hope to have it ready in 1-2 weeks. Just to inform if someone is thinking to start a testrun. Betatest are welcome from older versions too, or you can also wait the next version if you like to experience the russian part. I plan to to create 1-2 more version and then take a long break when Iron Front arrives. Still I am getting more and more excited of this project. Could be that I will work on this even more during waiting ArmA3. Smiley
