JTD Fire And Smoke
« on: 11 Aug 2009, 18:21:43 »
As some of you might know we're working on a fire and smoke effects addon for ArmA2. The ArmA1 version was very popular so we're adding new functionality and immersion into this one.

Take a look at our first test vid:

very nice indeed.
 I had an idea whilst creating ropes for various things , if you are not already aware i t may interest you to know, that you can create a very simple generic addon to attach your effects too.
 basicly create a memory lod and then create a number of vertices, you can attach your fire effects to these and animate from a cetneral position , it will efficiently give the impression of a spreading fire and you only need to place 1 or 2 in a decent size forrest.

 animate as normal through the user source ,give them the opportunity to animate x,yz and rotate.
 use the this animate ["x",_x] to animate
 and use fire effect attachto [animatedfireaddon[0,0,0],"x"] .

 it was an idea i thought i would share because i wont have time to try it anytime soon and your effets would compliment it very nicely.

 to make things easier there is an o2 script that will name your verts for yu in sequence if you chose to use many. its here on the forums somewhere.
 anyway i stop now incase your already using it etc. :).

 keep it up and please bring back those bloody scared birds , i was really looking forward to them, did you sell em lol ?.

I love ofp

Please tweak the ARTY FX to make the dust be bigger and stay longer.
And please, please, please make it modular. So that you can use effect (change) X, Y, but
not Z. If you need details how to achieve that, just tell us.  :)

Thanks!

Thanks for the interest everyone :)

@DeanosBeano:
The addon will work on a tree-by-tree basis, tweaked to emulate what I perceive is a realistic, but gameplay-friendly, way. Each tree will cast a search for other trees based on time, proximity, wind and slope to perpetuate the forestfire movement. Luckily all this does not have to happen particularly quickly :D like zombie logic, it can take it's time and not interfere too much with the other stuff going on. Only the actual particle effects will do that :)

However, I am interested in your method in general, can you tell me more about it?

@kju:
Tweaking existing default effects was a large part of the ArmA1 addon, but it won't make a big appearance on this one. Maybe, after a decent release of the JTD Fire & Smoke addon has been released, I can look at particular default effects and see what can be done?

JTD Fire & Smoke video 2

Demonstrating the forest fire propagation effect. Propagation is speeded up for video purposes :)

I'm in a position to be able to pass this addon out to a few early testers, if anyone's interested. I'd be especially interested in online tests.

Well, as far as SP is concerned there's not much to do other than report on relative performance issues I guess. There's a new build with better birds (old build was too many birds, too small. I made 'em fewer & larger, seems much better overall. Oh yeah, and they cheep :D). I have to say that it does add to the tension when you're watching for enemies and some birds go up somewhere. Especially as you don't know what sent them up ;) it's not a definite "enemy cheat" inclusion.
