CH47 Can't Float
« on: 12 Jan 2006, 14:24:10 »
I've just been playing with the config.cpp file that comes with the CH47 and I noticed that the "canfloat" variable is set to true!

I tested this feature by slowly landing on water...  Quite quickly the damage bar indicated I was not as bouyant as the config would suggest.

Anyone else noticed this variable, or even has a reason why the copter won't float? After all, real Chinooks can float!

Cheers,
deadactionman.

I have a feeling that this is a game limitation.  The only vehicle class, besides boats, that I know of that can float is tanks.  I didn't think that helicopters had that ability.

I found this web site...

http://www.chinook-helicopter.com/history/history.html

I guess the only way to make an in-game helicopter float is by the clever use of scripts. Was there not a Bell JetRanger or a Coast Guard addon that had such a feature?

Yes, I belive those helicopters used floats that were classed as boats and then attached to the helicopter either by scripts or as proxies.

Hmmm....I've looked at the config for the chinook and nowhere does it state:

canfloat=1

or

canfloat=true

This would explain why you keep sinking.

It would be interesting to see where you are getting the canfloat =true from.

The only vehicles with canfloat=1 are the M113 and the BMP.

Just checked mine and it does indeed include the "canfloat=true" entry.

To the best of my knowledge, I'm running 1.96b and none of the original config has been changed. I've got plenty of addons but unless ch47.pbo has been overwritten by a 3rd party addon (doubt it) it appears I have a different chinook to everyone else ?

Thanks anyway!

Planck... you forgot the BRDM :)

Hehehhe, they don't have that property I think floating is hard coded. ;)

My CH47 pbo didn't have that value, either.  However, I put it in and nothing changed.  I don't think the helicopter class of vehicle is affected by canfloat.
