using morse code in missions
« on: 05 Feb 2005, 17:13:07 »
Hi guys, I found a bad ass site with a morse code translator that even plays it in audio and spells and translates.  Good for covert ops where normal radio contact can't be used behind enemy lines.  So if you want a real challenge, make those who play your missions translate morse code to understand orders from hq instead of using a damn radio.  At least then they'll learn something.  That's what its all about.  You can guarantee a long mission when most of these kids aren't used to translating morse code to send back an appropriate message.

I think I'll stick to using it in cutscenes and for SFX in game. But thank's for the suggestion. A useful resource

Now there's an appreciative man.  As for those of you who want a long mission, well, you might want to study.  It's not bad for a kid to kind of take a break from shooting stuff to interpret a secret message from hq with his pencil and pad by his computer and referring to his notes section to interpret it and send the appropriate answer back.  Makes for a very challenging and different experience for current war gamers.  Now ofp is going to make you bring a pad and pencil to your computer desk.

Yea, would be good for spec ops. Maybe your on an enemy held island and they can't send the mission via radio. So then if you feck up the message when understanding it, you could attack or blow up the wrong thing or your boat won't be there when you arrive... :'( ;D

... or good for some low tech resistance campaign, or something set behind the iron curtain in the 1950's or 1960's.

Another idea is to have the players relay a morse code signal from the resistance and on to their HQ. Let's say HQ wants an answer how many of the tanks that are rolling to the front line that took the south way and how many that took the north way.

A resistance squad counts and sends the message to the players. If they mix upp the messages HQ will still respond to what they were actually sending. And if the players said that the tanks was going north, then all reinforcements will go north. Let's just hope the tanks did the same.

something wich would be good but you would have to learn it fluent is like a script wich opens window where you must type in messages in morse code.

well maybe you got a table to translate the incoming message, but you only have the option of four responses, depending on the mission, if its a deep recon mission you might just go to your radio and press the word WMD, and then the radio automatically transmits the morse code signal and then the incoming message from hq is sent to you and you either translate it, or it pops up on the screen what the message is saying like you're some kind of veteran and know morse code by heart.  You might do the second idea for the latter missions and the first idea for the first mission.

Would it be possible for someone to make a 3D dialouge? base it on the laptop, it can send the message, decrypt and encrypt them too? type the message, click "Encrypt" then "Send". i think this would be great.

All you need is a spoon and a block of wood.
