Civil War Campaign
« on: 17 Jun 2004, 20:13:30 »
Situation: Republic of Nogova situated on an archipelago on the Black  Sea is facing a national crisis. It's formed of five islands that are lined up in one axis with Nogova in the middle. The eastern islands(Kulgujev ... and Nogova) want to separate and form a Socialistic Government.  The republic doesnt have the power to fight this threat, and seperation is inevitable. The Republic, however, wants to keep Nogova, because of its natural resources, reserarch facility, and because it is the capital and  most developped island.

RN (Republic of Nogova) orders the other two islands (Everon and Malden ) to draft all the men between ages of 18 and 40. Nogova is facing a civil war with communistic extrimists (sponsored with arms by USSR )and conscripts (sponsored by USA)

You play a role of one of the concripts from Everon. First mission would be your arrival in the boats with others from your unit in one of the western ports of the island. You will disembark under altilery fire and repel the first attack. The RA (Republican Army) will find itself controlling only the airport and the northern port.

Patrols
Assaults on fortified positions :gunman:
etc...

The first objective will be to take the western half of the island, due to the friendliness of the population, which in contrary is hostile in the east.

In the middle of the campaign, a cease fire will be announced, and border defenses raised on the bridge sides and in the north (similar to those between the soviet uninon and NATO)

After couple of days the RA will make a huge assault on the bridge (with you on the first wave) and then secure the hills east to the bridge.

Patrols
Assaults  :gunman:
Defending Convoys
etc...(take into account the hostility of the citizens. You can imitate todays Baghdad)

and finaly the battle for Lipany

So what do you think?

I think it's a great idea if you can make it so that none of the sides are the "good guys", or even better, letting the player decide for him self which he thinks are the "good guys". So first you can play as a RA guy which you have covered quite good, then you change to the socialists due to being captured or something. When you've played these 2 built in mini-campaigns of 5, 6 missions each you can choose who you are going to fight for in the last couple of missions and decide the fate of the islands. :)

Also one note, socialism and communism are two different things. You have to pick one and not say in one mission that you're fighting socialists and in the other you are fighting communists.

Hmm when I read this, I thought ohhh cool some battle of gettysburg anyone? But I do like this idea. The islands embroiled in a civil war makes it that much more exciting. How are we going to go about this though? Does each island have custom troops and such? Like one buys abrams from NATO and one buys t80s from the USSR? :P

Maybe have some missions where you disrupt the enemy supply flow by blwoing up some docked lsts or some other ship....
Some cool harbor stuff, or maybe when their C130 is landing with the goods, launch an AA missile and make it go down in flames then run like hell to get away.

This idea has many possibilities. :)

hey

Thanks for ideas mates, but the truth is that  I am just bad at making missions, so if anyone of you would like to start this project and maybe hopefully end it,  I would be overjoyed. ;D

But please include me in the briefings.

Comming back to the campaign, I'd expect the two sides without heavy armor( Maybe BMP and M113 but that is all), because
1. I dont see any big harbor to disembark them.
2. There is no point for sending such a war mashine in such a small area

OK OK, there can be up to 3T72s and 3T55s in the campaign

Cause the commanders always break rules right :afro:

I also like the idea of choosing on which side you play, but looking on the world of a soldier, he doesnt have much to decide on

ex: You have orders to pacificate a village. Oders are orders and desertion = death, so in one aspect you can play as the bad guys.

You can do it this way:

First you are fed up with propaganda on one side and you're on a patrol. Your squad get massacared except you who surrender. You are taken to the enemy base where you are fed with their propaganda and you join them. When you're on a mission you meet your own buddies and it would be like a "trustee duell" like in the movie "The Rock" where the terrorists starts pointing their gun at each others. You decide whom to win by shooting the side you don't want to and the side you preferd you join. Or something like that.

Yeh good idea, im thinking of making sumthing like that but not about communists etc. I was thinking of making a civil war based on different factions/ militia's that have been left after a long war and are fighting for power of the island.

Thinking bout what missions i cud make.

Hey,

Great news Gooner. I hope you want to locate this on Nogova. Its the only big island suitable for this kind of stuff that I know :-\. Well you can count on me with the ideas, but it would be better if we could contact through MSN. You can find my address on my profile.

I hope something will be ( hopefully good ) out of this

cheers

The critical aspect to this is making the player believe that the islands are in close proximity to each other:   I would recommend a fake map showing how they relate to each other.   Use that trick in the CWC campaign where you take off from one and land on another to encourage the feeling that they are close.

A civil war on one island is just a war between two sides:  lots of cutscenes and some non-shooting misssions would be required to make it feel like a civil war.
Plenty of reviewed ArmA missions for you to play

I'm already making something like that (and have been for the past few months) so If you try my campaign and recognise the idea, don't try to claim it. It's purely my idea.

If I did get the idea from you I would put you in the credits but, in this case, the idea came from the development of my first mission (which still hasn't seen the light of day, not even beta light).

This post isn't meant offensively or anything. I just want to clear it up in case anything starts over it in the near future.

Your not gonna see my campaign anytime soon so don't postpone yours just because of that. Mine won't be out for at least a year yet, likely more.

My first mission is coming along quite well and should be available for Beta-testing after about 2 weeks to a month (just a guess right now, not definite). Basically a fairly easy introduction to the campaign. Required addons are lots of BAS stuff and Skye island. That's all I'm saying before I go too far off-topic.

An excellent idea, but you'll find it tough to actually make a campaign as good as the idea. As macguba says, you need a lot of cutscenes, very good cutscenes, to keep it all together. That takes a lot of time. I think this sort of campaign really needs a full team working on it.
