An idea to help mission makers
« on: 07 Oct 2003, 12:18:03 »
I know that music can play a big part in how a mission feels for the player and I think that perhaps it may be a good idea, that everyone posts here, all the good tunes that you think may suit certain conflicts, a brilliant set of music within a mission can really up my satisfaction and appreciation for it. What I would not like however, is if somebody made a Vietnam mission, and included lets say, punk rock as its sound theme ??? ::). In a way, this thread could be used as a resource for mission makers to find and select good tunes. This is also good for me  ;D since then I can find all those tunes that I could never remember the names off :p

So if the moderators dont mind, I will post some to start this off :)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vietnam War: Adagio For Strings (Platoon Theme)
Vietnam War: James Brown - I Feel Good
Vietnam War: Do Wah Diddy ( Artist  ???)
Vietnam War: Nancy Sinatra - These Boots Are Made For Walking ( ;D)
Vietnam War: Wayne Fontana & The Mindbenders - Game of Love
Vietnam War: Searchers - Sugar And Spice
Vietnam War: The Rivieras - California Sun
Vietnam War: BirdBrain - Youth of America Recommended by KJAM
Vietnam War: Jimmy Hendrix - Are You Experienced? Recommended by SEAL84
Vietnam War: CCR - Fortunate son Recommened by xenofanes

WWII: Burning Bridges (Tune from Kellys Hero's)( :) fantastic tune)
WWII: The Great Escape

WWI: The Fureys - The Green Fields of France
WWI: Tommy Makem & Liam Clancy-The band played Waltzing Matilda

[Somalia / Black Hawk Down] Hans Zimmer - Of the Earth

[N.I Conflict] The Chieftains - Women of Ireland (Instrumental version)
[N.I Conflict] The Chieftains - Skibbereen (Instrumental version)

[Aircraft] Kenny Loggins - Dangerzone
[Aircraft] Gimmie Some Lovin (Days of Thunder theme specifically)
[Aircraft] Jimmy Hendrix - Voodoo Child
[Aircraft] Airwolf Theme Tune (although in my personal oppinion, a bit cheesy)

[General] Prodigy - Firestarter
[General] Linkin Park - Session Recommended by Drozdov
[General] Megadeth - Rust In Peace Recommended by Warsmith
[General] Megadeth - Dawn Patrol  Recommended by Warsmith
[General] The Doors - Break on Through (not know it?, you dont know what music is)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If your going to post mention at the beginning what it would suit like I have, and include the artist when possible, if you cant mention the artist, maybe another user can fill in your blanks, this will make it easier for users to track down the song in mention.

[I will update this one post of mine all the time :)]

Or maybe it would be a better idea if I made a website for it instead... then people can email me and I will update it... this may cause less clogging here on the forums?

I would suggest "Linkin Park - Session" as a good tune for any atmospheric and tense cutscene. I'm using it for my campaign. Hmmm, seems I can't post these days without mentioning my campaign. Ah well. I also think "Manic Street Preachers - If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next" is suitable for any mission that has a message, if you follow me. Though it is long. I was thinking of using it for my outro but decided against it.

also for a nam mission "youth of america" by BirdBrain may be good, its a bit upbeat but the lyrics go something like

Quote
Say a prayer for the youth of America,

God bless our youth from America.

And I can't stand this anymore,

All the dead kids lyin on your door,

and you don't hear a word they're tellin ya.

You're all dead. You're al dead...

You've been wasted!!!

and
Quote
Don't believe a thing they're selling ya.

They got a carrot on a stick in front of ya*.

Take it back from a hurting child,

you know they can't even use it now,

and it was yours in the first place anyway.

note * this line means that they are either lying to you or as most military organisations do (not that im an exper) not let the grunts know 100 percent whats going on

How's it going,
I'm working Megadeth's 'Rust In Peace' and 'Dawn Patrol' and
Mettalicas 'Blackend' into a couple of scenes. Mettalicas 'One' has an intro that has battle ambience for about 20 sec that sounds good. Slayer is another. I like the fast riffs for action scenes and the solos can really set the pace for getting the atmosphere of a tight battle. A lot of these songs have lyrics about war and death so they could sit well with alot of missions.

I can't remember the song name or the artist, but the song goes something like this...

"1, 2, 3, what are we fighting for?
 Don't ask me I don't give a damn,
 Next stop is Vietnam.

And it's 5, 6, 7 open up the pearly gates,
Well I don't have time to wonder why,
 Yippee, we're all gonna die."

That's the chorus anyway. The rest of the song is also appropriate. I think it's famous enough for one of you to know who wrote it.

Jaws for a boat mission. Sorry fella's, had to ;D
The composer John Williams has done some excellent that could be used.
I was also thinking Credence Clearwater have some great songs that would go in really well, like SuzieQ in a chopper or Fortunate Son for an loose outro. Goannas 'Solid Rock' the begining would be pumping in a scene.

Although it is probably only my singular oppinion, I believe one should use tunes that were around during the actual conflict. It could just be me, but hearing music from the 60's in a Nam mission, really makes it feel like the 60's hence bringing about a better atmosphere.

This could be simply because im a bit old fashioned even though im only 20 years old, but I would like to hear other peoples oppinions on this.

It is true, the atmosphere is great with the older songs. It works in the videos of Vietnam, but then the Matrix looked and sounded great in its  action scenes. I wouldn't like to limit myself to one style until all is tried and tested either. But I do agree with you on old classics in vietnam. Probably wouldn't like to do a scene of WW2 with some of the music that was floating around then. So you could also put it down to the 60's had great music.

Anything downloaded from the bill brown website.  Granted its all in mp3 format but rip his music and use it and your set.  He does music for games n stuff and keeps his samples online to download.  just go to yahoo and type in bill brown, he's a music composer.

Heres a WW1 song, its a great tune, heres the lyrics of it

Tommy Makem & the Clancy Brothers
The Band Played Waltzing Matilda

Now when I was a young man I carried me pack
And I lived the free life of the rover.
From the Murray's green basin to the dusty outback,
Well, I waltzed my Matilda all over.
Then in 1915, my country said, "Son,
It's time you stop ramblin', there's work to be done."
So they gave me a tin hat, and they gave me a gun,
And they marched me away to the war.

And the band played "Waltzing Matilda,"
As the ship pulled away from the quay,
And amidst all the cheers, the flag waving, and tears,
We sailed off for Gallipoli.

And how well I remember that terrible day,
How our blood stained the sand and the water;
And of how in that hell that they call Suvla Bay
We were butchered like lambs at the slaughter.
Johnny Turk, he was waitin', he primed himself well;
He showered us with bullets, and he rained us with shell --
And in five minutes flat, he'd blown us all to hell,
Nearly blew us right back to Australia.

But the band played "Waltzing Matilda,"
When we stopped to bury our slain,
Well, we buried ours, and the Turks buried theirs,
Then we started all over again.

And those that were left, well, we tried to survive
In that mad world of blood, death and fire.
And for ten weary weeks I kept myself alive
Though around me the corpses piled higher.
Then a big Turkish shell knocked me arse over head,
And when I woke up in me hospital bed
And saw what it had done, well, I wished I was dead --
Never knew there was worse things than dying.

For I'll go no more "Waltzing Matilda,"
All around the green bush far and free --
To hump tents and pegs, a man needs both legs,
No more "Waltzing Matilda" for me.

So they gathered the crippled, the wounded, the maimed,
And they shipped us back home to Australia.
The armless, the legless, the blind, the insane,
Those proud wounded heroes of Suvla.
And as our ship sailed into Circular Quay,
I looked at the place where me legs used to be,
And thanked Christ there was nobody waiting for me,
To grieve, to mourn and to pity.

But the band played "Waltzing Matilda,"
As they carried us down the gangway,
But nobody cheered, they just stood and stared,
Then they turned all their faces away.

And so now every April, I sit on my porch
And I watch the parade pass before me.
And I see my old comrades, how proudly they march,
Reviving old dreams of past glory,
And the old men march slowly, all bones stiff and sore,
They're tired old heroes from a forgotten war
And the young people ask "What are they marching for?"
And I ask meself the same question.

But the band plays "Waltzing Matilda,"
And the old men still answer the call,
But as year follows year, more old men disappear
Someday, no one will march there at all.

Waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda.
Who'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me?
And their ghosts may be heard as they march by the billabong,
Who'll come a-Waltzing Matilda with me?

[So if anyones planning on building a WWI mod] :)

Russian Red Army Choir - Hunt for Red October - good for building up an atmosphere. Good for an intro. But its quite long.

Hans Zimmer - Pearl Harbour - Brothers - i used this in my mission Final Strike. Quite a sad piece, again very good for a cutscene.

Hans Zimmer ( i think) - Crimson Tide theme - again very atmospheric, military type track.

Brian Eno - Force Marker -  if anyone has seen the film Heat, this is the music played during that amazing bank robbery scene. Repetetive but good to show sum build up to sum action.

Anything from Hans Zimmer is good ;D : BHD or Peacekeeper Soundtracks for example

Vangelis - Conquest of Paradise, Chariots of Fire, Excalibur are also very good

Theme from MASH ;), I think also that Jazz can be a quite good style for this job.

cheers

For any large scale modern battles, particulsrly involving tanks or airstrikes,

Wolt Ihr das Bett in Flammen Sehen?, Links 2 3 4 and Feuer Frei  by Rammstein

Don't Stay by Linkin Park

Here to Stay by Korn

Age of Panic by Senser

Black Sabbath's 'War Pigs' would be a pretty good Vietnam track and in a funny way might suit WWI.
