Theres on that recived a score of 2 points by Cap'n Winters. It's a real n00b mission but it's good fun anyway.

i havent seen many (read: Any) good D-Day missions.....especially beach landings......AI just isnt suited to it..... ::)

hey

I agree with Pathy, there aren't any descent D-Day missions out, I have played a few and well to be honest, are pretty poor, the AI dosn't react realisticly enough to gettin shot at on a beach especially under that much heavy fire... :-\

"WWII Pathfinders" by Igor Drukov

http://www.ofpec.com/yabbse/index.php?board=23;action=display;threadid=11982;start=0

you're a pathfinder that has to mark the drop zone for incoming paratroopers in the early morning of d-day, then destroy a flak emplacement and capture a town
Title: Re:Any D-Day Missions?
Post by: Pathy on 06 Jun 2004, 09:51:47
Hmmm could be good. Yeh the only really good WW2 missions are gonna be inland ones, AI sucks too much to do the beach.

I once tried to make a mission similar to the final battle in Saving Private Ryan, with sticky bombs that you could plant on tanks ect, but it was kinda crap  ;)
Title: Re:Any D-Day Missions?
Post by: XCess on 07 Jun 2004, 00:41:31
Heh. I made a sort of D-Day mission... using G36s and M2s though instead of Thompsons and Mg42s... Called 'Take Le Port', got 4/10 but I liked it back then... wasn't so laggy back then so  :-\ Ok... so it wasn't a D-Day mission it was just a beach invasion but same thing really in OFP, you're never gonna get a MOHAA style beach landing in OFP. It should be in the mission depot if anyone wants to check it out.

Looks good, but does it play well that'll be the big question.
Title: Re:Any D-Day Missions?
Post by: Dubieman on 08 Jun 2004, 03:36:37
The biggest problem to overcome is the lack AI intelligence to get behind cover when fired at. I can see it now, I'm a german machine gunner in one of the bunkers and swoosh a higgens boat drops its bow and the guys jump out. I start firing sporadically expecting them to jump behind the sand dunes and wrecked pieces of armor and wiring emplacements but lucky me those americans are running at me in a staggered column! :D I open fire with glee and wacth them go down one by one and then they are all gone. And BOOM I'm dead with a bullet in my head from some guy with a laser accurate(ofp engine issues) M1Garand who was hiding in a bush 450m away.
Ahh darn and I hit retry. :P ;)

All the add ons are there for a killer mission but sadly the AI isn't. :'(
Title: Re:Any D-Day Missions?
Post by: dmakatra on 08 Jun 2004, 07:12:12
I cannot see why the AI should be any problem at all. Making everyone hit the dirt and hide behind objectives can be scripted, and should be scripted for a successful Omaha Beach mission. The biggest problem is the shortage of the fight. Sure, spray can be scripted as well with those two wonderful scripts at the scripting: beta testing forum but the player can just put a Garand shot straight in the MG42 gunners arse and then it would be all over.

There is a mission at ofp.info which is just as my previous suggestion a bloody noob mission. I even had to open it up in the editor just to make it work propely (the boats were crashing in to each other otherwise) but once you get on the beach with 7 other squads along with yours and everyone is dropping dead all over the place. Damn, it's such a good atmopshere.
But of course, it's not a 9/10 as I said and there is no realism (82nd are landing in Higgins boats, err... no) and I don't think there is a single script in the mission.

EDIT: Another problem would be to make it balanced. How the hell can one little player decides the fate on Omaha Beach. Sure, it's fun to play a grunt in something really big but if the end of the mission doesn't depend on the players action... Well, that sucks basicly. :P

Title: Re:Any D-Day Missions?
Post by: sim on 08 Jun 2004, 18:31:59
hey

I agree AI jumping for cover is the problem but as said by Armstrong it can be scripted and if you know scripts well enough you can do this, as for shooting the MG42 gunners in the head with an M1 Garand, just use a script to replace the dead gunner with another one, there's a script by General Barron for this or just write it yourself... ;D

Title: Re:Any D-Day Missions?
Post by: dmakatra on 08 Jun 2004, 19:14:44
That is of course true. But it's not very realistic. You can shoot gunner after gunner after gunner and they keep comming back after 2 secs. :-\

:beat: *Gets Shot* :beat:
Title: Re:Any D-Day Missions?
Post by: Gooner861 on 08 Jun 2004, 19:28:15
Its goin to be a bit hard to shoot at the MGunner if he's quite a bit away, in a bunker whilst ur bein shot at by a few Mg's, first thing to do is to get off the damn beach.

But also wud they not replace the gunner in real life anyway, obviously not as quickly as 2 secs but surely they wud try and fill that gap.
Title: Re:Any D-Day Missions?
Post by: sim on 09 Jun 2004, 18:12:08
hey

@Armastrong of course they replaced the gunner, not every 2 seconds, but as quickly as they could otherwise if the gunners were just shot and not replaced the allies would have got up those beaches in no time at all!

To be honest if worked on a hell of a lot this could be an amazing mission, which im sure its going to be.. ;D

sim

p.s Take a look at Perttis Omaha beach map beta... its not very completed but it is pretty kool.    ;D

Argh, just lost everything I just typed!  >:(
I attached the RAR file, but it wouldn't attach them..
I went back, and it was empty...
So, I've half made a DDay Omaha beach landing mission

It's as I left it, with no bunker, and no randnom MG movement script.. There's a high disp script on the M2s (Can't find a good MG42 or similar.)

Fell free to finish it, or use it as a template for your own.. Just credit me, oh, and send me the mission when your down ;)

Addons needed :
CoCMines
EditorUpgrade 102
DW Nazis (OFP.info) :: To get rid of these, open mission.sqm in notepad, and find the 4(ish)    "DWRgermaninf4", and change that to "SoldierEB"
Higgens Boat (OFP.info)
Invisble targets

Gd luck :)

hey

This thread has gone a bit quite so i thought I would say something.... ;D

When making a D-Day mission everyone tends to put the soldiers in groups, that is why AI acts so stupidly!

Why not just place individual soldiers on the beach and give them their own waypoints that way you can easily tell the individuals what to do in scripts rather than a leader ordering the soldiers round in an unrealistic fasion and getting them killed..... Thats why most D-Day missions fail.. I think.. ::)

Title: Re:Any D-Day Missions?
Post by: Pathy on 12 Jun 2004, 18:17:12
Does that limit you to 63 units per side though.
Title: Re:Any D-Day Missions?
Post by: sim on 12 Jun 2004, 19:34:55
hey

Yeah pathy it does unfortunatly limit you to 63 per side as I found out today, I have also started to make an Omaha beach mission called "Dog Red", obviously you land at Dog Red of Omaha,  :P,

The mission seems to be going ok at the moment the only problem is gettin the MGs to fire when you want them to... but thats being worked on at the moment  ;D

Also the mission seems to lag quite a bit because of the beach obsticles but that will be fixed by deleting some of the ones you never get to see (don't ask me why I put those in  ::) )

And to top it off its very hard.... you can barely get out of the water sometimes without being shot.... :-\

 ;D

I'll post again soon with an update and will probably put up a beta when its done, but that won't be for a while.

Dont forget though if ur looking for realism, thats wot u want, unfortunately sum of those guys never got out of the boats.

sounds fun  :)
Title: Re:Any D-Day Missions?
Post by: sim on 12 Jun 2004, 21:06:09
hey

Yeah i am looking for a lot of realism in the mission and some of the guys don't make it out of the boat... especially when some of them blow before reaching the beach, and because i've given each soldier an individual script, it is easy to program realism into the them and the MG42s that fire onto the beach....

If this mission is a success, and im hoping it is, :P, I am planning to make more of them... probably from Gold beach, from the point of veiw from my grandad maybe...  :)

Hello again!

Well i think to end the mission u wud need to both capture the beach etc and kill the germans. The main objective was to capture the beaches.
Title: Re:Any D-Day Missions?
Post by: Pathy on 13 Jun 2004, 09:40:50
Mission ends when you capture the beach  :)
Title: Re:Any D-Day Missions?
Post by: DBR_ONIX on 13 Jun 2004, 11:31:57
You could get 126 enemy units, I suppose.. Use West and Res guys.. Set the resistance to friendly to West.. And double that with each group with two guys in it
About 300 units.. Thats okay

But the biggest prob is the AI not taking cover, but instead crawling up the beach, getting shot ::)

Ooh, theres a script in the eds depot thats been added, a DDay machine gun script :D
Will try it out when I get home

Title: Re:Any D-Day Missions?
Post by: Pathy on 13 Jun 2004, 13:05:21
This setunitpos "up"

Problem solved.

I would add this for about half the units, i mean, you dont want everyone running and you dont want everyone crawling, but you dont want nobody crawling...... :)

As i've promised there is a picture attached to this but I'm only going to give you one otherwise knowing my luck i'll be accused of advertising and this link will be shut down... :-\
That picture is very early in the making and more things have been added since I took it but thats all your going to get!    :P

I saw the D-day script in the ed depot but decided to write my own and it works pretty well so I'm happy with it.

I do use the setunitpos, a lot of animations and the setcaptive command to keep alive and kill the unlucky ones.

Each unit has his own particurler set of scripts to work through and a lot of the commands are done at random.

I really need a good map of the exit at Omaha Dog Red to show me where the machine gunners were persitioned a long it, if anyone has a link to one could they please send it to me and i would be very grateful...    ;D

Any one got any ideas for the mission and then please post them!!!   8)

63 individual soldiers per side would actually lag, but if u put them into groups of 2 it would cut down on lag.

Use stuff like:
Code: [Select]
_bomb = "bomb" camcreate getpos boatname
_bomb setdammage 1
to blow up the boats

Title: Re:Any D-Day Missions?
Post by: Tomasz on 18 Jun 2004, 18:23:42
 Hi,

Sim, the map is not so detailed, but when i went to Omaha Beach, there are 3 exits (Vierville, St. Laurent {I stayed there over night} , and Colleville where the American Cementary is located). Each exit is like a valley with what once were bunkers on each side. I guess they would also put some barbed wire and mines over there.

I watched the show on National Geographic, where they talked about omaha beach.

First there were the dikes for the boats (under sea)
next were the poles with the mines (also undersea, but in low tide they were sticking out)
next there were the hedgehogs and plenty of antitank mines hidden in the sand
and finally the dense barbed wire.

There warent many bunkers like in SPR, there more mashine gun posts.

In reality due to the low tide, they had to run over 500 m to safe ground.

You can also add, that the DDtanks which were supposed to land with infantry sank like rocks too far from the shore.

Hope I gave some help

Cheers

I watched the longest day last night and it is such a bloody good film, i do believe that the beaches on that are more realistic than SVP because it was made bout 10 or 12 yrs after the landings actually happened.

Hey gents,

I'm almost done reading a new book on D-Day ("D-Day: Omaha Beach" by Joseph Balkoski) which has lots and lots of diagrams of the beaches.  There isn't anything topographical but the locations of the main fortifications ("resistance nests") are listed along with the specific info on the locations and routes of US units.

I'll see if I can scan some of them and slap them up here tomorrow.

I havnt actually started the scripting yet, but as I've said before, i think, each soldier has his own set of random scripts to follow... its going to take a long time but it will be worth it... ;D

Wow!! Now i have to try and get those addons to play this wen its dun ;D .

I can just picture in my mind landing there, dashing for cover. Looks great. Hopefully the AI will be as good and the same for the atmosphere.

U gonna add custom music? Plus u gonna add artillery + mortars etc now that wud make the games atmosphere amazing.

Looks promising  ;D

Just try and think of any gud war films u seen. For the landings ur gonna wanna have tense music building up to the landing. On the beach, depends wot u want - action/tense music.

I dunno i like Hans Zimmer stuff, maybe he's not rite for this though. Saving private ryan music?? Dunno just think of films were u have heard gud music that wud fit in well with the scene.

By the way how long is it till this will be completed?

hey

hmmmm... I will need to go through my war films collection.

I don't want to release it to early because the AI will be nothing to what I want it to be, I may release it in BETA once I have the basics down and a few scripts in, maybe a video?
But if I do BETA it to soon I can imagine the reviews: crap, crap and more crap... etc
I'd say maybe a BETA in one month now my exams have finished.. ;D

Please never mention the word exam again  ;D . Ive had enough of them  ;D .

Anyway, one more point, sorry. But isnt this mission gonna seriously lag, with all the artillery, MG fire, number of units plus all the scripts that are been fired from each unit.

Unless u have a gud computer u mite not be seeing that urself but for sum it mite not be playable.

Title: Re:Any D-Day Missions?

hey

Yeah I know what you mean, that word is just horrible!

As for the lag, It does not lag one bit at the moment with just all of these beach obsticles and enforcements and believe me there's a lot you can't see, I will most likely delete dead bodies to reduce lag but have fewer random ones placed to make it look more realistic.

I have already had a go with loads of units on the beach, it dosn't really seem to lag and beleive me I have not got the best computer in the world, (PIII for cryin out loud with an Nvidia riva TNT2!!!).

It should run fine on slower comps but if it doesn't I will make a lower spec version...

The mission beta I'd say will probably be in about four weeks, three weeks at the earliest, I'll try and post all of the addons you will need in about two weeks, this may be tricky because WW2EC are updating their US D-Day pack but the 2nd version has a few fixes aswell as some more annoying errors.

I'll post a pic of some fighting on the beach in a bit...

Are you going to make a Normany/france campaign for it? eg.
That would be coool ;D ;D ;D
Even if there was just training.. Maybe like the Hidden & Dangerous 2 trainig (The first part).. You run an obstical course, fire a few weapons at targets, go to a grenade/bazooka range (Up to here would be cool), then you get a jeep, drive to other stations, like a stealth one, where you sneak into a swiming pool to try out this diving equitment, and an explosive range.. But screw those bits, as they're more special forces bits ;)
It coudl show how little training some of them got (How much training did they really get? I was never sure), and how they were throwen staight from basic training into war..
Would make if from a v. good misison to a friggin amazing campaign ;D

Just release something atleast :P

Good luck with it! :)

Hey, antime i can help, i would :D

btw, maybe you could have some of the CoC tommohawks floating round in the water, and when a ship goes near them, the trigger goes and a big explosion happens, like a sea mine? I suggest getting the mission editior addon upgrade (go to the post 'GENERALS' in scripting: genral, i think) and there is a post by macguba that hsows you the link. You can pu in mines and trees and houses and such.

Cheers,

Tomahawks :hmm:
Whats wrong with the CoC Torpedos :p
For multiplayer.. Just delete the AI, waypoints.. make a few people playable (Where you can change a AI to a player..)
Then just use teh Export To Multiplayer bit on the save option (Same as export to SP, but it puts the PBO in the MPMission folder :P)

I'm guessing he already has the editor upgrade thing, as he's put the tank traps in.. I guess?

A multiplayer version would be amazing though ;D
As would a single player... :P

Hey sim & the guys who are carefully listing in  ;D

I had an idea, youknow how the germans were doing landing defence training as the allied forces landed >:(, well maybe you could make a US/British/Canadian (allies) version and another as a german :-\. and, when you land, maybe a camera flying along the beach from the northern(or western) to the southern (or eastern) part? and showing shells exploding :o and zooming on a bunker and go in slow-mo and have a dude fall over dead ::), and then it goes back to the game :P. And he intro could show a fly-round of of the beach before the landing, and maybe a german conversation seconds before the landing? oh, and are you going to make this into a project? and get some guys to help?  ???

The intro is yet to be made but it will only be the focus of the Vierville exit.

Later on, if this is a sucess, I will make another D-Day mission from the point of view of my Grandad on Gold Beach...  :)

Also plans to do an airborne mission, maybe Pegases Bridge and also some bob things...  ;D

There is currently campaign writing underway and I am trying to make some missions for it, fictional campaign from the view of British and Americans. But at the moment I am hard at work to get my entry mission for WW2EC in, I will hopefully send it to Sengir on Thursday and then put it up for BETA testing on Friday.
Just for the n00bs of you who mis-read that  :P, that is NOT my D-Day mission, it takes place after D-Day as an American Ranger assualting the town of Saint Laurent...

Ye... Most of the D-Day missions ain't good. It's fun to play (for 5 min.) U also see that most of the ppl have different beach landings. Summin funny too, i have Age Of Empires 2. And someone created a D-Day mission. It was really funny. But to get back to OFP, D-Day missions belong in a WWII game.

Another no hoper.... I see you only registered yesterday, which means you probably havn't been playing Flashpoint for as long as me or a hell of a lot of other people around here, we know the limitations of the game and how far we can go with scripting, that's all this mission is, a big script. So far this mission is going incredibly well, the AI is reacting okay and that is because each one has its own set of scripts to tell it what to do, which means they don't act stupid.

Also if this mission was meant for a WW2 game, why make a WW2 mod for Flash?

Greets.
Ive had a  D-Day mission for ages, Since we installed the Invasion 1944 mod. Theres a great Island, We Used the Normandy Island for the Invasion, altho the beach is a bit narrow theres great Bunkers built there along with tank traps set up, i Used The Higgins Boat Mod for landing Craft and some WW2 Aircraft , P51s P38s From Trenchfeet??, some Arty fire from a simple script, and the Grouplink Script by ummm  toadlife modified by keykat? bad memory. I used couple other addons  a Allied Units addon  and a Funnies tank addon. Worked Well on High End Systems but alot of the guys with medium low end system had real Framerate probs, so many units active in such a small area. But its hectic as so slow framerate was a real killer.

Sounds like its coming along just great. I think you should make 4 versions:

•Normal US Soldier
•US Pilot
•German Soldier
•German tank driver/gunner wateva.

If you did that, then no-one could complain and say 'It would have been beter from the other side..'

Have fun doing all the breifings and decriptions and what-not if you decide to !
